Are Coordinator Intro Press Conferences the Norm?

Submitted by winterblue75 on

There seems to be an underlying tone from some local media and twitter (and not just the typical asshats in this town) that this press conference today was a media grab by UM to get some spotlight back on the program in Ann Arbor.

A lot is being said that introductory press conferences for coordinators are not standard operating procedure. Are they? I'm not sure

Also that Hoke was basically relegated to just a figure head today because he didn't answer questions while DB did.

Just curious as to people's thoughts on these items

DB played some role in Hoke firing his friend and hiring Nussmeier. I think in the short and long term this will help Hoke succeed here. Mattison is solid DC and expect his defenses to improve substantially in future season. It will be great when we consider a bad season having 2 losses. I think the future is quite bright for Michigan and coach Hoke.

If a press conference about a coordinator hire is a media grab, what is an article/radio show about said press conference?

Wouldn't any football press conference be a media grab? Who cares if there are people out there who are genuinely interested. It's a fairly big deal to a lot of people, including former players, current players and current players' families. Not to even mention students and fans.

Valenti's point is that Hoke is DB's personal hand puppet and this whole OC change was DB's decision not Hoke's, which is why Hoke didn't take questions and DB did.   Valenti went further to say that DB is essentially Jerry Jones and has way to much say in the running of the football program compared to the head coach by referencing the weekly film sit-ins and the rumors of how this OC switch went down.

Do I believe it?  As much as I don't like what Valenti says, over the years he tends to be more right than wrong.    So part of me feels very uncomfortable about it.

Think about it.  He has absolutely ZERO proof of what he's saying.  Did he sit in on any of the internal meetings between Hoke and Brandon?  NO.  Does he have any eyewitnesses who were there?  NO.  Does he even know Hoke or Brandon personally?  NO.  All he bases his theory on is that DB is a hands-on AD who likes to get involved in the details.  So what?  That doesn't necessarily make him another Jerry Jones or mean that Hoke is some sort of puppet.  Personally, I'd rather listen to that blowhard Huge than one second of this Valenti idiot.

Some things never change. I swear, I haven't listened to Valenti and Foster since about the end of Tiger baseball season. I just gave it up after really starting to taper off over the summer. But I listened today.. HOLY ****. It's somehow gotten worse. I was shocked. Floored, even. How does he completely make something out of nothing? The only story here is that Michigan fired one guy and hired another guy.. and in most people's opinions, put themselves in a better spot to win some more football games. But wow, you heard nothing about that on the radio today. It was all typical shock jock, sparty radio. I just really hope other people who listen recognize this. Sorry, this is probably old news around here.. but it had been so long since I listened, I was just shocked when I turned it on today aroun 4pm.. only last about 15 mins. It's the bottom feeder of "sports radio".. it may get ratings, but it gets ratings in the same way that awful reality TV shows get ratings. Some of the absolute worst shows on television get the better ratings.. certainly the case here with this radio show. I thought he might slow down with finally getting that Rose Bowl win (which is pretty much his Super Bowl lol). But, nope. Still throwing **** at the wall to see what sticks.

I could care less if Dave Brandon is in charge and Hoke is a puppet ala Jerry Jones, as long as it is important to Dave Brandon that Michigan wins.

Honestly, even if Dave went to Hoke and said "Look, the big donors are threatening to stop donating, the old guard is grumbling - even Desmond on TV, and half of MGoBlog is threatening to drop their season tickets and PSDs. Al's a great guy but this is a business we are running and we need to do something to protect the brand. Nuss called from Bama and said he's being pushed out by Kiffen. This is our chance to make a big move for the brand. You've got to decide to let Al go." all that proves is Hoke is the great family guy we think he is. Sometimes you have to be pushed to make tough decisions.

Anyway, whatever ... when is NSD?

get involved with day to day football operations?  Does Brandon get involved with the depth chart?  Does Brandon dictate who will be recruited for what position?  NO?  Then he is not Jerry Jones, not even close.

I don't know who this Valenti guy is as he wasn't on the air when I lived in Ann Arbor, but if he's spewing this crap unchallenged, I'd switch stations in a flash.  If he does allow call in, ask him those questions....better yet, ask him to give one of the DFW stations a call and ask their opinion.

This hire is news. If it wasn't, nobody would have wanted to ask questions or have shown up. For the media to call it a reach by Michigan is kind contradicting. Then why are they as a newspaper there sending people and why are they publishing stories. Obviously there was a demand for comment on the hire.

I'd love nothing better than for him to shut his mouth, but he's been right on point ever since Dantonio was hired and the Dark Ages began.  I hate it.

Why even have a presser?  The Detroit Media is already extremely biased against Michigan Football.

I just read the F**p article.... they are trying to turn this presser in to a circus.  Hoke needs to tell them FU and move on...seriously.

of accommodating media attention in an efficient way of handling a news event or hiring.

Yesterday, Chris Christie met with the press for 90 minutes to answer questions about GW Bridgegate in Fort Lee, NJ. All he did was announce the firing of two staffers and apologize profusely while denying being a politcal bully for apparently not knowing that staff were taking it upon themselves to punish the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee for not endorsing him as NJ governor last year by closing two lanes of traffic heading into New York during one of the busiest weeks on the busiest commuter bridge in the world.

That was a national story.

Hoke's hiring clearly wasn't a national story, but it involved a major staff hiring impacting two of the leading programs in college football. So, yeah, a press conference was in order.

But this is also part of our currently wired culture and need to have a first-hand knowledge of an event with widespread interest.

I agree with you, but stuff like this is exhibit A as to why we don't have more press conferences.

I wonder if Hoke isn't showing Sharp's article to Nuss right now and explaining to him that he should never voluntarily saying anything of importance to the meida.  Becuase, in this town, he shouldn't.

Michigan was just trying to grab media attention are being incredibly disingenuous to say the least.  They make their living trying to create controversy and sowing seeds of conflict where none exist so they can get more clicks.  And they don't have a shred of evidence that supports their stupid "Hoke is a Brandon puppet" assertion.  Hoke has absolutely zero obligation to explain to the media or anyone how or why the decision to switch OC's was made.  Personnel decisions are strictly internal to the athletic department, so any information they decide to divulge is up to them.  I don't see why these so-called journalists feel they are entitled to know every little thing or expect Hoke has to answer all their inane questions.  Sheesh.

Well said. It's just unfortunately that that's the age we live in tho... people want answer right now. And to questions they really have no business asking. Or they are free to ask... but they shouldn't feel slighted if they don't get what they want. It's a joke.. when they don't get their way, they start to make things up, or slant things a certain way. I feel lucky that I am able to notice the difference, or when it is happening... but it scares me how many people out there take everything they read or listen to as fact.

The bigger the spotlight is the more things people are going to find to pick apart. Bottom line, this hire is a big deal in the college football world. It's as simple as that.

I got about one sentence into Drew's opinion piece and said, "Man, maybe the Mgoblog folks are right about the Free Press."  Sharp and Valenti are trying so hard to be the guy you love to hate, but it falls so terribly flat.  They're just sad.  It'll be interesting to keep an eye on the 105.1 ratings and see if Valenti doesn't soften his approach as ratings improve for the new guys.  As for Sharp...eh, it's not like print is a growing business.  Sometimes the dinosaur makes a racket as he sinks into the pit.

I do love the fact that the MSM people who actually went to the press confrence and reported on it are too stupid to realize the irony of bitching about how it wasn't worth a press conference.  Uh, dude, if it wasn't worthy of coverage why the hell did you go?

And, just by the way, who fucking cares about how the press conference went?  If this guy can help us win a NC, then I frankly don't give a shit.

DB's MASSIVE ego! I really hope that whomever is hired as the new University President will reel in this ass clown, and make it less about him and our "brand" and more about friggin' winning.

and the first three pages of the sports section (which in a modern newspaper means at least a quarter of the total content) was devoted to the Bengals' hiring of Hue Jackson and his introductory press conference.

And it's really nothing new for Michigan, either, though the last time a coordinator was hired (and not as part of an entirely new staff) about five days elapsed before they held the presser:
