The Architect: How Jon Sanderson Builds Better Basketball Players

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

There's been a lot of talk on the board lately about "Camp Sanderson" being an important driver of UM's hardwood success. However, much like the phrase "John Beilein's offense", few who talk about it have any idea what it entails. Let us be ignorant no more - read Daily alum Everett Cook's piece that gives us an interesting peek into the world of high-level strength and conditioning that is "Camp Sanderson".

Somehow, this made me miss Mitch that much more admittedly:

“We had a greater emphasis on nutrition [with McGary], because the kid can eat,” Sanderson says. “Caris and Nik can get away with it, but Mitch could be a WWE superstar. He’s like the Undertaker. He’s a big, physical guy, who could be a massive human being. We could get him to 300 pounds and under 10 percent body fat if we really wanted him to get there. He’s that special of an athlete."

I don't know that I've ever heard McGary described like that, but somehow I totally believe it.

but I truly believe we were a healthy MM away from a national title last year. Nobody in the tourney could have kept up with that outside game and MM running around like a maniac inside. Bench would have been deeper, etc. E8 without him but a title with him, IMHO.

That article ends rather abruptly.  Probably the section on a typical day should go before the final section on "Changing Times" which contains the tag line for the piece.  Overall, pretty well-written and interesting, though.  I wonder how the schools who cannot afford such facilities and staff will be able to keep up.
