Aquaman on QB Competition

Submitted by Free Hot Dog Man on

We'll obviously know more after we get spring practice updates and see how they do in the spring game, but who do you think will win the starting job? Steve Lorenz likes Speight:

I'm kind of leaning toward Malzone if it's not Morris. The kid wins at everything he does and has the mobility Harbaugh is looking for. Harbaugh said at the signing day presser that he doesn't seem like a freshman and I don't think he'll play like one either. Gentry is probably too raw to start, but I could see him being used even this year as a short yardage/goal line Tebow-type. Everyone's written off Morris, but I won't be surprised if he looks the most polished in the spring game. I can see him being #2 if he doesn't win the job.

I hope Gentry gets a redshirt so he can get some solid coaching from coach and make the most of his talents in years 2-4/5. At any rate, it will be interesting to see what happens this Spring/Fall.

lets have  a good qb now and win now

hopefully, he starts because he is better than what we have seen so far out of morris (not impressive) and speight (could not surpass 3 bad qbs last year).

i want a 4th year qb who is being drafted to the nfl in round 1, not taking a 5th year (kevin hogan).

So, this high school quarterback from New Mexico, who likely none of us has seen play in person, is better than what we've seen so far out of Shane Morris? Really? Based on what?? The number of stars given by a recruiting service?

Maybe Speight didn't play this past season because they wanted to give him time to develop and preserve his redshirt.

What about Malzone who'll be there for Spring ball, arriving well ahead of the annointed one? Should he even bother to show up and compete?

I'd tell you to stop drinking and go to bed, but I'm afraid it might be too late.

You would want to spread out the QBs so you don't have so much of a log jam. At least two of our current quarterbacks  will end up eventually transfer before their Michigan career is over or at least should because they will never play a meaningful snap here barring an absolute flurry of injuries. You don't want a Junior, RS freshman and two freshman this year because the year after you would have Senior, RS Sophmore, RS Sophmore, RS Freshman, RS Freshman (not including the QB recruit for that year as a true freshman., our QB depth would hurt our QB recruiting.

It'd be much better to have a Junior, RS Freshman, Freshman this year and then Senior, RS Sophomore, RS Sophmore, Sophmore, RS Freshman next year.

I know what you're saying, but I don't think any of Harbaugh's 2016/2017 targets are going to be scared off by depth of lower-ranked guys who couldn't crack the two deep. I mean, I can see missing out on Costello if one of the freshmen is starting and playing well by the end of the season before I can see them both redshirting being an issue.

Our roster pre-Harbaugh for QBs

Bellomy RS SR
Morris JR
Speight SO
Malzone FR

Post-Harbaugh

Morris JR
O'Korn RS SO
Speight SO
Malzone FR
Gentry FR

That's two guys who didn't redshirt or play much, two true freshman, and one who can't play this year. Bellomy wasn't going to start, let alone play much, and our depth was terrible prior to Harbaugh bringing in 3 QBs this year. If both FR redshirt this year, you'll have

Morris SR
O'Korn RS JR
Speight JR
Malzone RS FR
Gentry RS FR

I just have to think for depth, one of the FR will not get a redshirt though.

I want to see what Morris can do with a new coach (who is a QB coach, no less) and a fresh start. I think he can execute the game plan that Harbaugh wants to implement.

Although at this point I am open to the possibilities given the current QB situation, I am very curious as to what Morris might be under Harbaugh and with some actual development as a player. In all honesty, I think the in some form it is all there for him, but a different staff and a different approach are needed to bring some of this potential to the surface.

Don't get me wrong, I think whoever proves themselves as most capable to the new coaching staff should start, and I believe the staff will ensure that happens. Everything about our offense, other than improved line play, was in a funk last season. A new year and new coaches will be a nice breath of fresh air for many players.

I'm pulling for Morris, hopefully he can put it all together this upcoming season. He has so much talent I really hope Harbaugh and Fisch can really make a huge impact on him and all the other QBs.

If you were starting from scratch and knew nothing about Morris' last two years at Michigan, you would say "Man, this guy has all the tools."

The issues have been between his ears.  Let's see what he can do with new people getting in his head.  Aslo, even aside from new coaching, it can not be underestimated what having a good OL and a strong running game can do for a QB's confidence and proficiency.

He will finally have that.  Don't write him off just yet.

If one of the 2 freshmen start (and I think the chances of a quite raw Gentry winning a job with what 15 fall practices is near 0) I think you won't see Morris or Speight around much longer.  Morris is in a bad position because he did not redshirt so he could not even do the 5th year grad transfer thing.  He basically will be a guy with 1 year of eligibility after 2015 and have to sit out a year if he transferred.  I'd assume he would be the primary backup if Malzone won the job.  (Or it could be Speight)

And Speight would be a guy who was recruited by Borges who would still be a young RS SO at the end of 2015 with Gentry, Malzone and I assume a KJ Costello type coming down the pike.  And oh yeah, O'Korn with 2 years of eligibility.  Truth be told if Speight doesn't win the job this year and Harbaugh is high on O'Korn the writing is on the wall for him here.

And I dont even think whichever QB wins the job this year is guaranteed anything going into 2016 with O'Korn thrown into the mix.  Harbaugh may see Gentry and O'Korn as more guys he can mold but doesnt have access to the latter this year and the former is raw and without early entry (and you dont really want to play true freshmen).  So his 2015 QB could be nothing more then a placeholder until he gets his guys in place.  (Not that everyone is not "his guy" but you know what I mean)

So if its Malzone starting this year I'd expect a lot of turnover next January.

Too many people are writing off morris and speight because they couldnt reach the field under hoke. TBH I kind of expect some surprises on the two deep because im not particularly convinced that staff was good at deciding who to play. Also, speight and morris both have experience against a decent college defense, they will be way more adjusted to the speed.
