Aqua: Offensive Recruiting Primer

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on

I posted a primer on who's remaining offensively for Michigan on their board. It doesn't cover every offer we've made, just ones who are more likely than others. It's still pretty comprehensive. Hope you enjoy: LINK

It's crazy to think of how much talent we are going to have to leave on the board just because of how few spots are left.  And this is just the offense. Defense seems to be just as cluttered. There are way too many top players loving them some Michigan right now. Well... not too many, but you get the point.

Is it just me, or is Michigan football freaking hot right now?

honestly we need some WR's. Treadwell is a must get almost. Hopefully we get some visits from top WR's soon. That is the only position I'm worried about left.

As for defense, personally I think it is way more cluttered...there are about 4 LB's I wish we could take and same with DT's although we need a few of them.

We have offered DE Joe Mathis from Upland, Ca

4* DE 6'5 265 and runs a 4.65. He has offers from lots of heavyweights, and they just keep coming in. He said he will visit soon. Hopefully w Hawkins from Rancho, I still think Hawkins ends up at Stanford or UCLA but he loves Michigan so we will see.

I can't stop watching film on this guy. I think he looks absolutely incredible. If he did commit to Michigan I don't know he wouldn't see the field. Aqua, do you really think we have a shot with this guy? Great piece btw

Henson and Morris are a wash, and Fargas and Isaac would be about a wash.  '98 would have us at receiver, but '13 would make up for it on the OL I think.  Especially with guys like Butt and Shallman, and how great that OL class is, I think you'd have to give the edge to '13.

Allen Trieu of Scout.com has said on more than once occasion that Michigan will bring in a class of 23.  I have asked him personally on twitter, and he said that the number 23 is what the coaches are telling him.  So we have TEN spots left.

To speculate on the guys not getting 5th years isn't wrong, especially when the pool of possibilities is only about 6 guys and 4 of them are starters or major contributors (i.e. Toussaint is probably getting a 5th year, same with Lewan).

As far as the others, it's not so much that it's wrong to speculate, just that it's tough to know.  No one saw Christian Pace or Vinopal coming a last year.

Taking a look at the depth chart, there are a couple guys who will be fourth year juniors this fall who might not get 5th years if they don't contribute much.  I'm looking in the linebacker region of the depth chart.  Also, there are always fall out from younger guys that you don't see coming, or a medical hardship somewhere.

I have never said any player(s) is/are a must get...but it's Isaac and Treadwell or bust.  Our coaches have done an Tremendous, and I mean Tremendous job recruiting defense and o-line.  That being said, I am still anxiously waiting to see if they can successfully attract the playmakers.  As much as I love me some Hoke & Co. and their recruiting prowess thus far....I am not sold on their WR/RB (skill position) recruiting YET.  Isaac should not be difficult with our OL...Treadwell with our (QB) Morris.  The team must have difference makers at rb/wr if it wants to get to the upper teir.  With the talent in the midwest, this is the time to do it.  Without the playmakers...the other recruiting doesn't look as great as it is.  (Or, maybe I am nervous about how we closed after the epic whiffs at the end of the 2012 class).    ssl

My unfounded fear is that the skill players need more ego stroking' whereas Hoke is more of a straight shooter. I've said this before, but I think his schtick resonates better with linemen. However, he has surprised everyone thus far with his success on every level. So hopefully he tells Foster and Treadwell how much we need them and that the number 21 and 1 jerseys could theirs! You know Meyer is going to be telling them their shit smells like roses. Also, Morris + pro-style offense + angry hippopotamus O-line >>> Miller failing at a Tebow impression.

Is how far away many of the guys on that list are from.  We saw at the tail end of this past year's recruiting class how hard it is to pry a kid away when he's not from the mid-west.  We already have a great class no doubt, but if none of those guys give us a verbal before January, I'm not too confident in many coming.

I know Hoke and Mattison get alot of the press, and their work speaks for itself on defense and along the offensive line. But now its time for Borges to shine - lets do some work on the offensive skill positions! I know he's great with QB's and TE's but how historically has he done with WR and RB?
