Appreciation Thread: The Student Section

Submitted by aiglick on
This is for the student section that gets shit on so much by alumni on this site for not getting to the game early enough. I was at Iowa yesterday and the student section was at least half empty for the entire game. Ponder that. I think for pretty much all the games I can remember our student section is full or close to it by the end of the first quarter. Kudos to them. It is a different era these days so older fans who shit on the student section for being late and obsessed with other things can get off my lawn. I'm sorry students that it is likely you will have to see the same red clad stadium I got to experience in 2009 as a junior.

For a lot of students, thanksgiving is the only time to be home with family. So if you want the chance to see your family, you're selling your ticket to other broke students to watch a subpar football team, how much are you going to get when non students won't buy because of the validation prices and the other assorted inconveniences of the student section?

I don't think I'll argue that point.

Blame our university presidents and athletic directors.  They have gone out of their way, to stretch the regular season into Thanksgiving weekend.  To coordinate conference playoffs to fit television schedules.  Which I presume means to fit the NFL's schedule.

We have two freaking bye weeks, to stretch this season this far.  It will be just as bad in the future.

It sucks.  I think it's wrong.  Tell Dave Brandon the next time you see him.  Write Jim Delany a shitty note if you get the chance.  I prefer my college football in the fall, rather than the winter.

We're supposed to appreciate the Michigan student section and their poor attendance because Iowa's students also have poor attendance? Please to explain further.

in Kinnick Stadium.  It was sad.  Even a bit frightening.  Because I wonder if Michigan is closer to Iowa at this point, than Ohio State.

But then again there was Ohio State, filling their (larger) place with a raucous crowd in a snow squall.

I think we'd be better off comparing ourselves to OSU than Iowa.  At least for purposes of "aspiration."

They are undefeated and were undefeated last year.  BANDWAGON FANS.  Look into it.    Yes, Ohio people will be at the Big HOuse.  Because there are jerks who sell their tickets because our team is not great.  It's a guaranteed win for Ohio.  Why not drive up to Ann Arbor for a cheap ticket.  I bet in 2011 their road showing was not that great.

Just like our BBall.  I got into a game with the kids 5 years ago for $1 and a can of soup.  Now I can't find tickets.  People like to follow winners.   And you suck (excuse my language) if you give up on your team when they are down.

I will be there on Saturday.  Cheering for the good guys.  I haven't ever "given up" on Michigan.  Weather won't dissuade me.  (Notwithstanding my foregoing gripe about the season being two weeks longer than necessary, needlessly.)  Michigan's record hasn't dissuaded me.  Even my PSD hasn't dissuaded me.  So far.

I'm an alum who usually sits somewhere else when I can get back for a game. This year, for Nebraska, we all got tickets in teh student's section and it was a great time - until we lost. And getting called old by all of you young whippersnappers was...well that was kinda funny actually.

Too many 6-6, 7-5 seasons from Kirk lately. Plus 4-8 last year. This isn't the same Iowa team as 2002-2005, which drew huge crowds and didn't have an open seat.

Their fans have witnesses mediocrity with one anamoly season (2009). Same for us since 2007, except for 2011.

I was at the Iowa games in '03 and '05 and '09. Place was packed, even early.

Even MSU had troubles last year drawing students.

Not to mention the fact that yesterday was the coldest game in Kinnick Stadium history. When you're used to mediocrity and you're faced with the decision to stay in your warm dorm room or go outside and freeze your ass off to watch two pretty mediocre teams in a non-rivalry game, I can see how cornfed Iowa student stays home in that situation. Not saying I'd make that choice, but i get it.
