Well, on that thread alone, there's the pic of the creepy van with "Candy" written on the side.

Several of those were more concerned with third party attention on a high school sophmore for the gratuitous enjoyment of a college football fans. They said absolutely nothing to insult this young man. Agree or disagree with their position but at least represent it accurately
Come on yourself. She said he looked young and said he looked as young as hers which happened to be a girl of 10. Now I know that the last thing a teenage boy wants to do is look younger but there was no malice there. Anyway, I pointed out that a few pointed out his youthful appearance and even if you deem that insulting, many of those singled out were discussing the attn on sophmores.
to interpret Taryn's emotions for him. Whatever YOU interpret as innocuous, HE interpreted as an insult.
Big interview from the largest UM blog....and he's compared to a 10 year old girl. Sure he won't take some sh*t for that from friends.
This blog really does have some douchebags on here. If you don't like recruiting news, just fu*king ignore it. No need raining on a kid's parade debating the ethics of recruiting coverage, child exploitation, and freaking Penn State in his thread
Reinforces my belief that recruiting is basically the worst.
I'm not 100% yet, but I'm leaning towards saying these interviews are just one step too far for this here format. It's strange, because this blog had no problems regurgitating interviews, digging up whatever bits of info possible on recruits. I'm still reading through this thread, but that's my feeling so far.
Having said that, Brian's response seems heavy handed. I reserve the right to change my mind if someone sways me otherwise by the end of this thread.
Some people just come here to say things "clever" or "cool". I hope we can weed some of those idiots out.
I'm an avid reader of the site, and often get a good laugh from some genuinely witty, off-the-cuff posts. But I too am incrfeasingly annoyed with the number of embarrassingly obvious and "clever' sophomoric posts. Middle-schoolers? I hope so for their sake.
What also sucks is the frequency with which good healthy threads quickly digress into off-topic bitch-fests over the stupidest things. Seinfeld threads...but not funny.
I also frequent 11W. While not a douche-free site (none are), the threads stay refreshingly on-topic.
BTW, bitching about thread content is never off-topic.
Agree on the new rule.. I mean I've did some research and savage has done about a dozen interviews 2 which were videos.. with sites like Rivals, 247 & Scout. Someone must have taught him how to answer questions well and stay calm. Very mature to be only a sophmore. I've also heard some rumors about him skipping a grade.. guess this means he was class of 2017 but reclassed for high school football.. don't agree with that decision
Can you provide a link to the story about him skipping a grade to play football?
I didn't see anyone complaining about George Campbell or Shane Morris or any other recruits that were just sophomores but were being covered on this site. George Campbell committed before his junior year. Where was the outrage about him being covered? Stop making up defenses for a case by case basis people. If you don't like the fact that college football recruiting starts earlier and earlier then don't follow it. It's that simple. If you have nothing nice to say about a KID don't say anything at all.
If you think college football is bad, check out lacrosse & hockey.
Michigan is working on 2015, 2016, 2017 and beginning 2018s.
Hockey works on an entirely different schedule that takes into account junior and development leagues that take kids during high school. It's apples and oranges.
Thanks for informing me of something I already know.
"If you don't like the fact that college football recruiting starts earlier and earlier then don't follow it. It's that simple."
This is my strategy. I hope that the people who make part of their living by recruiting will do their jobs. It's weird to me, so I don't follow it.
I am seriously sorry!! beyond words.
my only comnent was that he looks really young. it probably had more to do with my being old. I don't question anyone recruiting him. geez. not even a little.
huge, huge apologies! I would personally apologize to the kid if it weren't a violation. I really did not see my comments as disparaging to him, but clearly someone else saw otherwise.
I agree. I think this is more of a "tip of the iceberg" kind of reaction to weeks/months/years of disrespectful and insulting comments. I bet that Brian regrets calling you out specifically and please do not let it affect how you contribute here. I've always appreciated your comments in general.
i wouldn't worry about it. there was literally NOTHING in that thread that would reasonably lead to a personal insult.
the kid looked really young, perhaps as young as your daughter, who is 10-12.
I can't believe this is even an issue.
The article says the kid is 6'-2" 180lbs and a sophomore. Granted, his picture certainly doesn't look that way.
I get that the comments about him being 10-12 were exaggerations to make a point, but those comments were making fun of him. Then it really got embarrassing with the whole creeper van thing.
Can you imagine his friends and grandmother going to read that thread? It was embarrassing to him.
wasn't the creeper van thing a meme perpetuated (if not invented) by someone who is or was paid to provide content for this site?
the comment about age was not 'making fun' of him, it's was a comment on how crazy it is for people to be interested in a 14-16 HS Soph. who may or may not be on the M football coaching staff's radar to be recruited.
Brian is passing the buck on this one.
Yes. MGoCreeperVan is one of Brian's tags and I got the photo from one of his posts. Check the URL. The van photo is hosted on this site. Funny how everything's come full circle.
Honestly, I read the exchange he posted to Twitter (the impetus for this whole thing) and I saw nothing malicious in your comment. It seems to me that even the kid might not have been crazy bothered (based on his tweet), but Brian felt it appropriate to take action for a variety of reasons.
I can understand a 15 year old not liking being called young-looking (we are all tough guys at that age), but it's hardly a big deal. Hell, he'll be 18 in the blink of an eye, and none of this will even be an issue.
whenever you want, if that helps. Have I told the story of how someone called me "Grandma" when I was 39?? Now that is disparaging, people.
I never understood the stereotypes about M fans until I started spending a lot of time here. Now I can honestly say, I get it. Im so glad I wasn't around for the Mlive days, it might've ruined the internet for me.
1) don't post pictures of the younger guys. The picture is what made people uneasy.
2) that thread should have been locked, and comments removed. It went embarassingly wrong.
3) reach out Teryn's parents or coach and explain people were more reacting to the thought of reporting on a sophomore and how it feels uneasy in this day and age, than making fun of Teryn.
Also, thanks gang, now Teryn's going to want to kick some butt on Thursday ...
Unbelievable. MGoBlog has become a model of what a dedicated/professional (well, when we are not losing to Akron and Connecticut..lol) fanbase looks like. It's also one hell of a recruiting tool, IMO. So if you say something stupid like that, get the fuck out. I hope you get banned and hope you never come back. It's one thing to criticize coaches for a job they are paid to do, but this is something different all together.
Looked at the tweets and the thread, and what am I missing here? This seems like quite an over-reaction. I guess someone just wants to be Mr. Tough Guy.
Also, I dont see anything wrong with asking a 15 year old where he wants to go to college, I just don't see why anyone would want to.
His twitter does not seem bothered by this at all... he tweeted the pic as if it was funny.. I'm guessing.
Hey at least I didnt trash a recruit. I mean, who would want to?
Honestly...who cares what he looks like. If the kid can ball and he does well in the classroom. I want him on my team. Plain and simple.
REAL RECOGNIZE REAL.
You just delete the insulting comments (and ban the poster for a period of time)? I know nothing is deleted on the internet, but at least it will have less of a chance to be seen by anyone (people can't really be screen capturing all MGo comments, can they?).
We can and have done it in other situations, even as recent as the UConn aftermath. This might be a bit of laziness on my part (I can only speak for me), but up until now, the recruiting threads were generally a little lower on the totem pole (i.e., considered "safer") and I did not read this one until the damage had been done and this thread appeared.
These kids are stronger, faster and better than all of us, I'm sure they can handle themselves. This little argument embodies Michigan, a minor point, a ton of pointless semantics delving into ethics and morality, the completely pointless and irrelevant complaints from the ohio state fan, and nobody willing to let it die. Wait, was this an argument?
The bye week must be like our full moon around here or something.
With the student thread and this, it leaves me just waiting for more insanity. The return of McFarlin is upon is.
I'm guessing the kid is more pissed about his tweet being blown waaayyy out of proportion than how he felt about the comment about him looking young.
I'm sure Once Jabrill finds this out he will make a statement on twitter or something.. just noticed Pepers is Mr Savage older cousin
Is he really going to base his decision on comments from this blog? What's worse a random blogger saying someone looks twelve (wow, what an insult) or comments on a podcast that the QB has mental injuries the last few games? Let's get serious.
What up Jayburn23. Been awhile
I give the kid credit, if he thought posters were being malicious, he could've said some pretty discrediting things about UM fans. Hopefully this isn't something that occurs again in the future. We all want what's best for UM, but this doesn't mean any of us are entitled to speak freely about recruits like we know them personally.
This will not be coherently enforced. It's too broad and vague. Some of the users listed weren't having fun at Savage's expense. They weren't disparaging him.
Users in the past have been permitted to question the wisdom of the coaches in offering prospects or accepting commitments which are both tantamount to questioning a player's ability. Will this still be be allowed despite the policy stated above?
When older people say you look young, a lot of the time what we mean is that we feel old...You also won't mind being called young-looking pretty soon.
A 35 year old who feels ancient whenever I see a new Michigan recruit
^^This^^ is underrated. I hated, absolutely hated looking so much younger than I was. It really affected me and my self-esteem. But now I laugh at all my colleagues that look near-death while I am still a strapping young man. Kidding, but not really.
I had Greg Oden's disease when I was in high school. Kids in grades ahead of me always asked me to buy them cigarettes and beer :(
Between this thread, RR battle 2.0, and the student basketball ticket debates, this has been quite a contentious few days here. The UFRs and hopefully some civil discussion can't get here soon enough.
I'm also looking forward to the UFR, were we get to say just how awful college kids are.
