Their mascot is the "Chanticleer."
Never forget that one.
I like the 1976 version, looks like a flustered rat-chicken
Or the South Carolina Gamecock.
also say something along the lines of "i'm not scared of the fab 5" and "i'm not going to let chris webber dunk on me!!!"... i remember watching that game and just laughing the entire time...
Nice jab at Albom there.
He's had his moments, but I've always viewed him as a whiny self-promoter.
Yeah, I couldnt resist a swipe at Mr. Cheese Ball.
And, GOBLUE4EVR......i remember that. But, I wasnt 100 percent sure. I seemed to have misplaced my copy of Fab Five as I wanted to confirm that memory of mine. Since I couldnt I left it out....glad somebody else recalls that.
I also thought one of Dunkin's teammates started talking smack during the warmup drills and C-Web and Jalen pulled out the pre game stat sheet and were like 'dude shut you mouth, you aint even on this list. do you ever play?'
LOL.....but i dont remember if that was against Coastal or some other team.
Hard to talk about that weekend and not bring up they amazing game against UCLA in the second round.
i know exactly where my copy of fab 5 is, i'll go and look it up to confirm... i'll give dunkin credit though, for a 6'-7" PF he had some balls to talk trash to webber... the UCLA game was awesome... when jimmy tipped that shot in i went running through my aunt and uncles house yelling...
I remember Webber dogging Dunkin's nickname "slam". Webber said if that were his nickname he would give it back.
for not being good enough to have been in the scouting report.
Ah yes, Van Exel's team.
See, I had that memory lodged in my head for years as happening against CC because I knew that Dunkin had talked trashed
Anyway, good catch and i'm glad I didnt put it in the post.
By the way, the win over Cincy in 91 Final Four.....IMHE, the most underrated win of the Fab Five era.
I remember the announcer from that game making a horrible mash up of Van Exel and Rose's names. He mentioned something about rock bands and wanted to make sure there was no confusion amongst his viewers or something to that affect that Van Halen and Axl Rose were not part of the game. It was merely the viewer getting Nick Van Exel and Jalen Rose mixed up. Van Jalen, Exl Rose. I have no idea why I remember that but still think it was stupid to this day.

Coastal Carolina disappeared after their coach broke down during a press conference and admitted to buying three players. Yes, there was a pay-for-play scandal in the Big South (easily the worst conference in the country at the time).
He was going to get busted anyway. The Myrtle Beach paper (the Sun? I think?) had the whole story and his players had fessed up. If you remember the movie, "Blue Chips," Nick Nolte goes into a post-game conference and basically just goes bananas, gets into a shouting match with JT Walsh, and tells Al Bundy that he bought Shaquille O'Neal, Penny Hardaway and Matt Nover. (shouldn't a movie directed by the guy who did The Exorcist, written by the guy who wrote Bull Durham and starring Lou Gosset Jr. and Nick Nolte have been better than this??)
In an early game in the 1993-94 season, the coach at Coastal melted down in a very similar and very melodramatic way and claimed that he had seen Blue Chips the night before and just couldn't live with himself. The team went on probation and two baptist schools, Campbell and Liberty, ended up at the top, duking it out to be the sacrificial lamb in the NCAA tournament.
Great stuff, thanks for adding the background.
I am ashamed I did not know this. Had I, it would have been great for the post. It makes Coastal's redemptive path back into the tourney all the more dramatic tomorrow.
I cant believe the coach went all Blue Chips. Too funny.
mid-major basketball. Maybe the talent level isn't the same across the board but there are definitely guys out there that can play. The quality of play isn't that much lower and you usually don't have to worry about agents, coach egos, and such (I'm looking at you John Calipari and you USC).
Coastal Carolina got Bossardized, with back to back threes I believe. And UCLA, what an incredible game. Ray Jackson with a put back after an Eric Riley missed free throw with a second or two left in the first half set the stage for the comeback, the play of the game in my mind.
Ahh, but without the aid of the internet, who called the UCLA game for CBS? (If you cheat, I will know)
I want to say Jim Spanarkel, if only because it's fun to say his name.
& Digger Phelps. D. Phelps leap to the play by play booth was short lived, thank god.
James Brown and Bill Walton
Fun fact about the Coastal Carolina game: walk-on Sean Dobbins scored the only basket of his career at the very end, in amusing fashion. While a CC player was shooting a free throw, Dobbins jogged down the court and then hid behind a bunch of U-M players standing up. After the FT, the players jumped away, leaving Dobbins all alone to catch the baseball pass for an easy layup. His teammates mobbed him afterwards.
I had forgotten about this, but after you bring it up, I remember it vividly now.
That was Coastal's last moment in the NCAAa. They have one more win to get and they get a chance for maybe a better memory, for them anyway.
Thanks for commenting on my blog. I appreciate it.
