Anyone ever been to a game at Iowa?

Submitted by bklein09 on
I currently live in Saint Louis, and I'm planning on driving up to Iowa for the game in a couple weeks. I was wondering if anyone has an idea about the best way to get some decently priced tickets? As of right now I am planning on buying them once I get there. If I do that, what do you think would be a fair price? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Also for anyone who has traveled to Iowa City before, is there any info you can give me that would be helpful? Thanks!

I like your plan of buying them when you get there. You will get the best prices by just going up there, standing outside the stadium before the game, and asking people if they have any tickets to sell. Your best best are to look for guys lurking in the shadows (you'll know The Shadows when you see them), who may even be holding up tickets for sale. The prices should be really good, as both teams just might be undefeated (barring a UM disastah in Lansing) going in. That's usually when the best bargains are to be found. As for hotels other accommodations, hell, just worry about that when you get there. There are PLENTY of places to stay in and around Iowa City, expecially if you count "around Iowa City" as anywhere from Minneapolis to Dubuque to Davenport to Omaha, Nebraska. Wouldn't worry, but you should get there at least two hours before game time to get your room set up. You're welcome!

While I'd advise going the StubHub route, I will say that many, many Iowa students do not make it to the game. if they make it a "Blackout," expect it doubly so, as the idiots drink themselves into blacking out and never making it to the game. (Which like, okay, I know plenty of my friends that have done the same thing, but it doesn't happen to half the student section.) Your price is going to be highly dependent on both of our rankings/seasons, but expect it to be higher than you'll want. Iowa, like all other middling Big Ten schools hates Michigan and thinks we are a rival.

Michigan beat Iowa 12-9. It was really cold and rainy, so my pals and I didn't get a chance to do much sightseeing that day. Iowa City is a pretty small town, but the main downtown area is a bit of a hike from Kinnick Stadium and the game day parking puts you even farther away from downtown. I recommend you pack a cooler and plan to tailgate for pre-game (although with an 8:00 PM start, you have probably have time to do all kind of pregame activities for this years game). Afterwards, there are several places in downtown Iowa City to hang out. The people there are passionate about the Hawkeyes, but overall pretty friendly. The only thing keeping me from another Iowa road trip is the drive, but I'd definately go back. It would be nice to catch a game in clement weather. As for tickets, I'd try U of M and Iowa ticket offices first and see if there are any extras. Have fun, bring home a victory!

I went back in '98... terrible game, at least we won. I was only 14 at the time and I don't remember much except that it was cold, rainy, and their stadium felt very old (not necessarily bad, just old), though the view was decent from pretty far up the corner of the end-zone. I would suggest stubhub as well for tix. I do remember walking a long way to the stadium, too. Other than that, I can't really help you out as my memory of that game is severely lacking for some reason.

I was thinking about going to this game as well, but I'm thinking about saving my money and hoping for a decent bowl game instead. I'd really like to attend this game as I've never been to an away game and it'll be a pretty big game for us. If I do end up going, does anyone have any parking tips? I usually park off of Packard in A2, is there any place like that around Kinnick Stadium?

We lost a close one. Fans were generally cool, except the one guy who kept throwing beer bottles at M fans. After they won, they were pretty gracious in victory and weren't overly obnoxious in the city after the game. Sorry though, I got no info for ticket buying since my buddy went there and hooked me up.

I was also there in 2003 and I thought the fans were the most classless people I've come across. I was walking to the game from my tailgate with some other Michigan fans (we were minding our own business), and out of nowhere we had full cans of beer thrown at us from the top of the parking structure next to the stadium. The police officers standing right there looked at us, then said and did nothing. I'd never go back.

As a season ticket holder I was offered tix to all of the away games, as I would imagine Iowa isnt most people's #1 destination, I would think their may still be some available through the school. Aug

taking a couple hard-drinking customers and my boss. Stubhub- 4 tix together for $440. I don't even care where. Smoking a big brisket, taking a couple cases of Canadians and some good bourbon.

Cant help you much on the Iowa City experience. This is my first game as a resident of this area and I don't know much about the place outside of downtown. A single ticket cost me 150 $ shortly before the season started for very good seats, they have been very hard to get around here. With the hype building for both programs I see the prices going up. Iowa City has a big alcohol problem and this summer we had more stabbings than you can shake a knife at. I am definitely ready to keep alert and move on at any sign of trouble, you should be too. See you there.

I used to live in Iowa City, and I've been to a couple games. There are a bunch of hotels up in Coralville near the Coral Ridge mall, and if you stay at one of them you can take the Hawkeye Express to Kinnick. It's only about two, three miles from the stadium, maybe a little further, but the train will save you a lot of hassle. Do make hotel reservations ASAP, there are a limited number of places to stay and they fill up fast for game weekends. If there aren't many vacancies, you could stay up in Cedar Rapids, about 1/2 hour away on 380. Besides hanging out at the stadium and tailgating, the other pregame option (it's a night game, IIRC?) is to go downtown around noon and hang out until before the game. There's a lot of bars and some decent restaurants - ETC and Shortz have good burgers, I hear, and I'm personally a fan of Which Wich, even if it is a chain. You might be able to take the UI Cambus to Kinnick on game days, which is free, and then once you're there check the scene out. Parking space is more or less at a premium, since there's not a lot of room to tailgate (they closed down Olive Court, which was a huge space for tailgating), so I wouldn't count on doing that. Iowa fans are a mixed bag, some are really great and a lot are more interested in drinking than in the game. My first impression of Iowa as a football town was driving past Kinnick to go to a downtown bar to watch a night game, and seeing people stream out of the stadium before the first half was even over. http://www.hawkeyesports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/081605aai.html Like I said, I lived in Iowa City for two years, and I've been to most of the bars and restaurants there, plus I know some of the hotels, so if you have any questions, fire away.

I beat Iowa 100-6 on Heisman mode in NCAA 10 on 360. Their defense is shit in that game Minor had 317 rushing yards and Matthews broke the school record for recieving yards. So far 8-0 in dynasty mode and 2nd in the nation! In the BCS I'm number 1!
