The bottom line is you're either for Michigan State and for Kirk or you're not.
For the record, I am NOT.
The bottom line is you're either for Michigan State and for Kirk or you're not.

I am for Kirk............Getting violently pile driven by Mike Martin...Maybe Dr. Cousins can repair his own dislocated shoulder:)
Im definitely not for someone who refers to themself in the 3rd person
Kirk Cousins is a bad kid. No parent would want their son to turn out like Kirk Cousins.
Can you imagine if your child were quoted for 4 years as often as Kirk has been?
Overall, I think he does a pretty good job.
Plus, I know from personal experience that the kid does more for other children than 99% of us.
But you don't like his rivalry quote.
No one is insinuating that Kirk Cousins is a bad kid. Not very rational of you, RationalMSUfan. I'm sure he does a lot for kids and all, and thats great, because they can give him the unrequited love that he seems to be so desparately longing for. It must be hard to have friends when you make such a finite distinction between those who support you and those who don't.
I don't like his rivalry quote because its wrong for anyone whos second favorite team is Michigan State, and wrong for anyone who happens to like Kirk Cousins but not Michigan State.
For the record: Michigan State is not my second favorite team, and I don't care one way or the other about Kirk Cousins.
So.... if Sparty is Kirk's wife, who are the kids? Makes more sense now why Sparty wears a skirt.
Sorry, temporarily irrational MSU fan, but Cousins comes off as a spoiled little baby with this quote. After all of the press he got for his pre-season speech, it's almost sad to see him reveal that he is, indeed, nothing special.
Really, though, it should come as no surprise. I have said that MSU is overrated all along, and wasn't really all that impressed with his pre-season, Sparty evangelism. Apparently, Cousins wasn't quite ready for the Thom Brenneman-Tim Tebow-style butt-kissing he has gotten from the media.
Anyone who cheers for Michigan is "agianst Kirk Cousins." Puh-leeze. The massive MSU inferioity complex rears its rather humorous head yet again. It is time for Kirk Cousins to see how many people are "against Kirk Cousins" when he eats turf numerous times on Saturday.
your QB, as you should. However, you don't have any reasoning behind it. What does # of quotes during a 4 year period mean anyway? Why is that relevant? If he does more for the kids, give examples or data.
Sparty, it's 1 day before the game, up yours!
No parent would want their son to turn out like Kirk Cousins.
I can confidently and reasonably say that I never want either of my two boys referring to themselves in the third person. (Or talking to the FREEP, for that matter.)
He would say something...well...a bit middle school. Can your respect for a person actually dip below zero if that person is Kirk Cousins? We should get Mathlete on that one.
...Deals in absolutes.
I'm married with children. I only live to serve.
Although, I'm married too, and I know all the absolutes that entails.
The line from the movie is poor, that's all I was getting at.
Are you saying there was a dumb line in a Star Wars movie? Get the eff out of here.
It looks like Devin Gardner will choose Michigan.
But I am really not with you. That is a terrible, terrible analogy you've just conjured up.
Also, while you're reading this, tell your parents how much it annoys me that they named you Kirk Cousins instead of Kurt Cousins, because there is no easy way to pause in between the two k sounds. It makes me hate you even more on a linguistic level, which is hard to accomplish.
Guess he hasn't gotten to personal pronouns yet.
For anyone who wants to add or update on personal motivation of a guy who has confidence issues/Little Brother Syndrome (LBS).
I hope these quotes were taken out of context....either that, or Kirk needs to lighten up a little bit. I understand that we are all very passionate about our respective teams/universities, and for Kirk Cousin's it is even more so because he's right in the middle of it, but c'mon man...........when all is said and done, it's just a football game that is being played saturday. Win or Lose, there are much more important things in life to get your panties all tangled up about. We also have to remember that he is still a college kid too, and despite his buttoned up and cerebral attitude, he is still young.
With that the case, I wouldn't base my "respect" of Kirk Cousins on his views/feelings of the Michigan/MSU rivalry - Everything I've read about him is that he is an exceptional kid and one that we should praise. I would say absolutely that I respect him and would love to have a kid like that as part of our University.
Having said that, if these quotes aren't taken out of context and if he does have strong feelings towards those who cheer for UofM, he needs to chill, relax and realize that it's all in good fun and just a game.
You can praise him but Kirk doesnt care. Either you're for Michigan State and Kirk or you're not.
If you read the article (I know, I know, Freep) it sounds like he's talking about some his former HS classmates and people in the Holland area. As in, they want him to do well but ultimately want Michigan to win the game.
Either way, it's a weird article and some bizarre quotes for sure. It sounds like he is, in fact, very personally hurt by everyone he knows not hardcore rooting for MSU.
i have cousins that went to school with him in hs and this article pretty much sums up the vibe i get from them. captain kirk needs to remember that two of his hs classmates play for the school he will be facing tommrow. just because he is the qb of mooo u doesnt make them less worthy of the support of his old classmates
I must admit I do not know who they are. Walk-ons?
The more you know. Thanks.
(I'd have Googled it but I was on the Droid app...on the can. Aw hell, I should've Googled it anyway.)
Broekhuizen & Brink.
EDIT: Derp. This is what happens when you open a tab at 9am because you want to read it at lunch, then don't refresh.
I agree. I know that if one of my friends went to MSU to play football and found success, I would wish nothing but the best for him. However, as a lifetime Michigan fan / now student, I feel like a rational friend would not expect me to completely alter my lifestyle and habits to support HIM and HIS SCHOOL over MY SCHOOL. As someone previously stated, there's that inferiority complex; everyone should cheer for State because I'M HERE! Why would you be a Michigan fan!?!? Don't you realize a local kid is playing quarterback at State! I'm offended!
I didn't read the article, but... Cousins probably does find it annoying when people come up and say things like, "hey, I want you to do really well on Saturday but I'm rooting for the Wolverines". His comments appear to be a response to that kind of sentiment, and in that context they are not unreasonable or sophomoric. I wouldn't be surprised if the reporter asked a question like, "what do you say to someone who tells you..." Then, once the article is published, Cousins looks like a dork. This seems to happen frequently in journalism. Much ado about nothing.
The third person reference is definitely weird.
All these dumb comments will stop when Michigan shuts them up.
Please let that be on Saturday.
This kid drinks more Sparty kool-aid than his fans do. He acts as if he was predestined to be the MSU QB. As I recall from the speech that the Green contingent seems to continually gush over, "Captain Kirk" desperately wanted to be a Hawkeye, or a Wildcat, or a Boilermaker (talk about violating his own rules about being 'for' something). It was only when he was headed straight for the MAC that Dantonio came calling. Sparty was one of the last places the good "Captain" thought he'd end up, so fogive me for not buying his "no in-between" shtick.
In the words of the late, great Al Davis.....Just win baby.
And all the Sparty nonsense goes away.
I wish that were true but the Sparty nonsense is everlasting. What might change is how much anyone outside of their fanbase pays attention to it.
I think we're being a little hard on the Beav here. If we gave the e-smackdown to every athlete who viewed the world as an "us vs. them" proposition and referred to himself in the third person, we'd have no time to post threads about mostly innocent but maybe a little misguided comments by other teams' players.
On the other hand it is hate week, so carry on.
The surprise is not that he derped, but that it took him this long...
My only beef with this quote is that if I read it correctly, he referred to himself in the third person. That's just wierd.
Really? We would like Denard referring to his teammates as his wife and kids? I admire that he sees himself as part of a unit and you can't like one part of the unit without liking the whole unit, but we wouldn't admire Denard for saying something like this.
Also, does anyone else find it funny that MSU took such offense to being called Little Brother but Kirk Cousins is carrying on the family anology when referring to his team?
Reminds me a little of the great William Shatner himself...saying strange things and looking a little odd.
Difference is WS is likeable...while little brother Kirk is decidedly not
This shouldn't be an issue for MSU going forward. It's unlikely that their next starting QB will be from Michigan, what with their national recruiting class and all, so he won't feel the same about the rivalry and people from his hometown won't be torn like this.
Andrew Maxwell, their current backup, is from Midland, I believe. Sorry to be a stupid killjoy.
Nah man, didn't you hear? They're pulling in 4 and 5 stars left and right. Can't keep talented kids like that from California, Florida and Texas off the field for long. Highly rated recruits from out of state don't go to State to ride the pine. Then again, they really don't go to State much at all.
How silly of me to forget about their annual top-5 national recruiting classes. Stealing Max Bullough's little brother from USC, Florida, Texas, and Bama was straight thievery!
I like Kirk Cousins a lot and see no problem with his quote. He's telling it like it is. The rest of the year a lot of Michigan fans will tolerate MSU because they have friends, relatives, co-workers or even customers that are green. In fact, I sold MSU $500,000 of air pollution control equipment and made a nice chunk of change.
But this week, you've got to pick sides. I respect him for going all in for Sparty. That's what so great about the rivalry. They really want to kick our ass, and we theirs.
It's going to be a great war.
the same thing you're hearing.
If someone came up to Denard and said "I love your playing but I hope Michigan gets killed," he would presumably come back with something like "It's not about me, I'm here for my team-mates -- go Blue," which sounds to me like (the Wolverine counterpart to) where Cousins was going.
It also sounds to me like he forgot the KISS principle and let his public speaking chops lead him into the dark forest of obscure analogies, etc.; but well within the bounds of not-bulletin-board material. (Harbaugh guarantee of victory, OSU '86, anyone?)
perfectly sums it up, thanks for that!
Sounds slightly out of context. As usual: never trust the media.
A lot of people say they'll support MSU in every game but one. I, personally, hope they lose every single game. Why? Because I don't want to hurt Kirk's feelings.
I usually wish sparty good will when they aren't playing us. I guess Kirk doesn't want me to do that anymore. Very well then.
I'll go with our guy... @ :40
This seems overblown. Now Stanton ripping up his cover of a video game because it had Desmond on the cover... The was a dumb MSU QB.
Now, now. There can be more than one dumb MSU QB.
As long as you don't diss DJ Jeff Smoker, tearin' up the club scene in Grand Rapids.
The qoute is a direct reflection of the coach he has had up there. They are obsessed with Michigan, because their coach is. In my opinion is a little unhealthy, and causes the non obssesed to wonder what the hell is this kid thinking.
"The Kirk's gonna get you Kramer, Kirk holds grudges"
"Hands off Kirk, Kramer, don't touch Kirk"
"Kirk likes spicy chicken"
It might be a new article. but didnt Cousins say this like over the summer or even last year?
These arent new sentiments from him. And I give these comments and the ensuing hullabaloo over them a big fucking YAWN
Lets play the game already, yo
I'm actually not bothered by this all that much - the kid loves his school and takes it seriously. We act like it is juvenille for him to be so passionate, yet you'll see grown men on Saturday screaming at college kids for screwing up something on the field, calling for them to be benched, kicked off the team, or worse. So whatever - it's a rivalry game and maybe Kirk buys into it more than others, but I could care less.
And not to be an ass or anything, but it's not like UM hasn't had some dumb talkers in the past.
motivates him I guess
It's been said before, but it's worth reiterating how MSU truly brings the inferiority complex upon themselves. It is not Michigan (or its fans) that make Spartans feel like the second-rate institution in this state, it is just an inevitable facet of their own behavior.
MSU, like many "State" schools, tries to 1-up their rivals by trying to adopt the elements of their counterpart. The prime example of this is schools calling themselves "THE university in ________". Further, academically, MSU fosters programs to directly compete with those established by UM. They then advertise these to the public with direct comparison about their 'numbers' versus ours.
In many other areas as well, we (as Michigan fans) are frequently not the ones forcing a comparison of schools. The Spartans are bringing it on themselves. Further, talk about setting oneself up for failure: it is immensely challenging to overcome a competitor by walking in their footsteps. Spartans have created an atmosphere of inferiority due to their (self inflicted, persistent) comparison with the established forerunner.
To say it differently, Spartans are second rate because they want only what Michigan already has. They do not appreciate the natural strengths and weaknesses of two invididuals/programs, they only want what 'big brother' holds - and more of it. Further, they seem incapable of pursuing interests aside from those where UM has gone before.
If MSU (+fans) were to embrace the qualities that set them apart from UM, like certain strengths in teaching, some science, environmental fields, (and aesthetics - women?), they would not feel nearly as bad about their self-imposed rivalry. True, there will be inevitable overlap and comparison of certain things, like football and basketball, but that will be far from the deep-seeded spite held by most Spartans.
This is also the reason why there is such a disparity in viewpoints between the two fanbases about this rivalry. UM, as an institution, desires very little that lives in MSU. On the flip side, MSU wants seemingly everything UM holds - academically, athletically, in both titles and accomplishments... just like a little brother.
TL;DR: If MSU didn't seek only to take from UM, but instead forged their own path, they might not bring such an air of inferiority about themselves.
EDIT: Err, Sorry. I meant this as a reply, but as my thoutghts coalesced into text, it got too long. So then i was going to try and post it as a new topic on MGoBoard for peer review, but I guess I don't have enough points to post there or something. Sorry for the hijack.
