OSU got some good news with the results of the BMV investigation. They were understandably pleased and announced they were canceling an independent investigation they had planned. As many pointed out here, some questions were left unanswered. Presumably the NCAA will still have some interest in the loaner cars, statements from former players about car deals, shaky OSU compiance records and other car related smoke.
That leads to the obvious question; what will the NCAA think of OSU's investigation? It looks like they have established a pattern of under-investigating itself, not the level of cooperation the NCAA wants. It increases the chances of the NCAA drawing out their own investigation.
Was this a calculated gamble or just another misstep in dealing with their scandal? Either way, it could lead to tougher sanctions if the NCAA uncovers infractions that OSU should have found. Dragging the process out hurts ttem too.
