Any news on Horford???

Submitted by robbyt003 on

Has anyone heard if he will be back for the Ohio game this weekend or if he is going to be redshirted?  Last thing I heard was last week and they were saying he could be ready by the Purdue game (which obviously didn't happen).

We could really use him on Sunday to help distribute the amount of fouls it's going to take to limit Jared Sullinger

If he is a healthy body, he needs to be available.  I really don't see any point in the red shirt, I think he is a guy who gives max effort but has a low ceiling.  With the recruiting momentum the Belien has right now, there will be other options available for size in the post.  If Horford is reasonably healthy and the injury is one that is not like to reoccur and/or leading to additional damage, he could give an invaluable 12-15 minutes per game to this team.

I always take a look over at UMHOOPS first. Dylan does a great job with the site and keeping all of us basketball followers up to date. In regards to Horfords situation, i would like to see him redshirt at this point because of his future potential.

John beilein said on the Michigan insider wednesday(?) that John could play about 5 minutes against Ohio, but they're going to let him decide if he wants to be red shirted

Saw him at the Union earlier today.  No boot.  No limp.  It seems they're going to see how long it takes for him to get into game shape, and if the timeframe is too long they'll slap a redshirt on him.

Actually, the percentage was increased to 30 percent a few years ago. Depending on how many regular-season games are on the schedule, a basketball player can play in either the first 9 or 10 games of the season and still qualify for a medical redshirt--if the player suffers a season-ending injury. The player cannot play in any games after those first 9 or 10. The cutoff for Michigan this season was 10, and Horford played in only the first 9 games.

I first thought a redshirt was the way to go. But if he can get going in Big Ten play, he could be the missing piece and catalyst that could take us to a deep NCAA Tournament run. This is a good team, and with Douglass and Novak graduating I think it's now or never.

Agreed that this is a pretty good team, but now or never?  Really!?  Have you looked at the class coming in at all.  McGary and GRIII are legit.  Next years team will be better than this years.  Novak and Douglass are great don't get me wrong but combined they only bucket 16 a game-replaceable.

can you honestly look at next years team and think they will take a step back?  Michigan hasn't had a recruits of this caliber for a long time.  Leadership is great and it wil be needed, but with Burke, Timmy, Morgan, and Smot, getting another year under their belt I think we will have the leadership and lets be real,  McGary and Robinson are on the next level, and don't forget about Stauskas.

Agreed and with GRIII and McGary next year his minutes may diminish further. I don't think a 5th year is going to give Horford much, and I think it handcuffs our scholarships a bit in a few years. I'd rather him, Colton Christian and McLinans just use their 4 years and hope Beilein can score studs while we are on the rise. (no offense to those players, I just don't see them getting major minutes versus the roster spot they occupy)

I think Horford has more upside than some of you are giving him credit for.  He's a very, very active player around the rim.  We don't have anyone else like that right now and while McGary might be like that next year, McGary can play the 4.  Horford can significantly upgrade our interior D and perhaps, offensive rebounding.  The stats don't show it, but he was looking much improved before the injury.  I think he'll always be in the rotation from here on out.

According to ESPN Insider

"ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan coach John Beilein said Monday that 6-foot-10 sophomore forward Jon Horford, who has been out with a stress fracture in his right foot since Dec. 10, might play in the Wolverines' game Tuesday at Purdue. "He's a little rusty as you can expect," Beilein said. "But he has practiced with us the last two days. We'll continue to monitor him and see what he does."
