Any early favorite for top player of 2015?

Submitted by Bo Knows on

I know we're right in the middle of things for 2014, but this time last year we already had a good idea of who Hand was from the camp seen.  With 2015 offers (and even a 2016 offer!) going out I just wondered if there was an early favorite for the top player of 2015?  A quick google search didn't tell me much....

Damien Harris, RB out of KY, has been very interested in Michigan, supposed to be a top 5 overall player talent, and we're the presumed favorites at this point.

The names I hear are mostly Michigan-centric, but I do think Kevin Dillman and Jacques Patrick will both be very highly ranked.  Defensive ends have been high up there recently (Hand, Clowney, etc.), but I don't know of any super-elite DEs for 2015 right now.

I am not Magnus and have no scouting experiance, so I'll field this one:

It is certainly not determinative, but the only Michigan player listed on that MaxPreps top 100 thing is Anthony Herbert (whom I have never heard about).

I would think Mike Weber and Campbell might fight it out for #1 or at least will both be in the top 5.  Campbell has a slighty better offer sheet at the moment (Bama, ND and MSU), but I think Webber will have the better offers and be higher ranked when its all said and done (offers right now include UM, OSU, MSU).

I think Brian Cole is another player who will be in the top 5 of the state.  I think he is very slightly behing Weber and Campbell.  He has 3 good offers as well (UM, OSU and MSU) but has yet to be viewed as much as a National product like Weber and Campbell.

Alabi is another player who will be highly ranked but I think he will be behind the others listed.

I'm curious about his actual size, but I'll say Kyonta Stallworth.  He's listed at 6'4" and 270 lbs., but I wonder if he's that big and/or if he'll hit a little bit of a growth spurt.  Otherwise, I think Mikey Weber is #2 and Brian Cole is #3.

It seems like George Campbell is going to be a top level guy.  Think he will probably be somewhere in the top 5 or 10 WRs.  Don't think he will be a top-5 overall guy, but could be a top-25 type player.

Also, based on offer sheet alone (and the very little talk I've heard about 2015) it seems like Jacques Patrick (who I think is a RB) is going to be a top guy, maybe top overall.  He has offers from basically everybody and has for a long time.

I watched the highlight reels of Damien Harris, Jacques Patrick, and Soso Jamabo the other day and to my untrained eye Harris definitely looked like the best. He was the fastest and had the most shake and doesn't give up much in terms of power to the other guys. The other two seemed more like bulldozer types, which we not only already have on the roster, but also seem to gain that top RB spot a lot less.

I'm curious about our QB situation. Jayru is a top talent at a pipeline school. I understand he might not be a 100% fit, but he's a huge talent with no offer. I'd love to get one of our resident experts' take on why.

We haven't offered any 2015 QBs, and it took us until the beginning of this year to offer a 2014 guy (and we only offered one).

That's not to say he gets an offer, but the coaches definitely haven't decided who they want yet and probably won't for a while.

There's no lengthy film on him AFAIK, so I can only say what I've read. He has some filling out to do, his arm could afford to develop a little, and his mechanics are poor. He is supposedly getting a QB coach this spring/summer to help with that last portion. Frankly, I'm a little surprised that Notre Dame and Alabama have already offered.
