Any Chance Carroll stays at USC?

Submitted by DrWolverine23 on
I'm getting a little concerned that the carroll to Seatle deal has not been completed yet. The main holdup is that Carroll wants total control like Holmgren at Green Bay. But this is concerning: “No, they do not have an agreement. They are not there,” the official told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because the Seahawks are not commenting on how far talks have progressed. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-seahawks-carroll&prov=ap&type=… So is there a chance that Carroll just stays at USC .................and so do their recruits? Therefore I can stop dreaming about a Gardner-Baxter backfield.

but this is too good to pass up: Baxter played a lot of wildcat packages in the All American game and in typical wildcat packages the QB lines up as an outside receiver. Devin Gardner has a great frame for an outside receiver and has practiced at camps at WR. Just sayin' that at least on paper it is getting me excited. Regardless, I would love to get Baxter. He would be huge asset.

I don't know about individual recruits, but if he stays at this point it will still look like he has one foot out the door. A lot of recruits see their coaches bail even without rumors during the process. You'd have to think this would leave a bad taste in their mouths if he stays or if he goes.

Hey, I posted this in another thread but it's kinda lost...so I'll repost it: I'm curious (i.e. not doubting) what your sources are? You clearly post a lot of recruiting information, and I'd like to know what your connection/position is. I'm sure you introduced yourself properly back during the dawn of this blog but I probably wasn't reading it much at the time.

Aside from the basics (premium access to Rivals and Scout), I talk with Tom frequently on Twitter, I'm friends with a high school football coach in southeastern Michigan who has a lot of connections with other coaches in the region, and occasionally I exchange emails with someone close to UM with a lot of recruiting knowledge.

I think too much damage has been done. And if the writing is on the wall, in regards to potential sanctions, then he will take the job even if it isn't exactly how he wanted it.

Depending on what comes out (if anything) from the investigations, I'd be surprised if USC wouldn't take Carroll back if the Rooney Rule actually resulted in a hire. He may be the best coach for that team ever, despite the excellent history USC has had. All bets are off if he was steering agents to players/players to agents.

I believe the delay has more to do with Rooney rule compliance than anything else. They don't want to make it look like they used Frazier.

Make no mistake, USC would take Carrol back in a heart beat. I don't think he is capable of burning bridges for non-disciplinary reasons (flirting with the NFL is not misconduct).

I am neither a Pete Carroll detractor nor supporter but have always believed he wanted back in the NFL despite the success at USC. He was fired from both the Jets and Patriots, unfairly in both cases in the opinion of many. He always planned to avenge those preceived wrongs and now will have his chance.

Leslie Frazier of the Vikings was interviewd fro at least four hours today. But Peter King of SI and some others are reporting he is getting the Buffalo job. Seattle is reportedly in LA to talk to Carroll now and tomorrow to finalize things. From what everyone in the NFl says, this is a done deal. Carroll is probably trying to close the flood gates and keep what's left of his class. Riley from Oregon State is the leading candidate, but you never know if Harbaugh can be bought.

If Harbaugh did get offered one of the four or five best coaching jobs in college football, he would have to take it, and I don't think it would have anything to do with being "bought." You don't get to be a good college QB, a pro QB, or a head coach without having a very healthy ego. The money would count, too, but I can't see anyone with Harbaugh's ego turning down the USC job. Harbaugh would think he could "fix" the lack of integrity he currently sees in the program, concerning both compliance and education. That being said, I think there's no way he gets offered.

Is it possible that ESPN reported a story as fact before they had all the information? Yes, that is a very strong possibility. The Rooney Rule interview was over this morning. The deal that supposedly was agreed to keeps changing (every time a new story comes out Pete is getting less money and less control/title). As I wrote in an earlier post, I will believe Pete Carroll is coaching the Seahawks a few months after it is formally announced.

Dillon Baxter has decommitted and won't be going back to USC if Carroll's the coach. Kyle Prater has called off his early enrollment. Seantrel Henderson and Lache Seastrunk are on the verge of dropping USC off their lists. If Carroll was staying, he would've come out and said so by now to try and save his recruiting class.

If Carroll was trying to keep his options open and get the best deal for himself, like any smart negotiator, he would say nothing, which is exactly what he is doing. Even if your assumptions about a handful of recruits (some of whom aren't even committed to SC in the first place) are true, Pete would be welcomed back to USC with open arms and still bring in a recruiting class that the overwhelming majority of the country would be jealous of. This will be over soon, but the "done deal" that Chris Mortenson reported is not fact (Why else would Pete still have to meet with ownership?) and considering ESPN's reputation and the nature of the decision I don't think it is crazy to wait until things are actually official before we treat this as a legitimate news story rather than a bunch of rumors and discussions.

whether Carroll stays or goes. They've had it coming to them for a long time, since I've been convinced for many years that the program under Carroll is as dirty as the Miami of Florida program was in the '80s and '90s under Johnson and Ericson.

If Pete does end up coming back he is not doing himself any favors by not returning recruits phone calls during a really difficult time for them. The fact that it took a few days for ANYONE from SC's staff to get back to a guy like Baxter seems absolutely crazy to me...

He's already lost quite a few people to the NFL (Griffen, McKnight, Damian Williams) and it looks like he's lost quite a few recruits too (DJ Morgan, maybe Baxter, maybe Prater)
