Anthony Gordon - Senior Quarterback Tera Nova California

Submitted by BlueCube on

It amazes me how deep into recruiting Michigan is given the short period of time the coaches have had to get organized and contact the top players. According to this Mercury News story, Anthony Gordon's coach walked into his office and saw he had a voice mail. It was from Jay Harbaugh and he said he had watched Anthony's Hudl video and wanted to come watch him workout. This guy had no interest from anyone despite being the California medium schools player of the year. He had 4,899 yards passing and  49 touchdowns.

Jay met with him yesterday and according to the follow up Mercury News story he had him throw and filmed him. His main concern was arm strength to play at the next level. They were on the field for an hour and talked for another half hour.

It will be interesting to see if he gets offered. I would guess he would jump at a walk on offer given that he has heard from no one. I'd be interested in what the coaches on the board think of this kid.

Jay is literally sweeping the country to find potential stars.

3 QBs would be good if he is physical enough. We need it badly! We haven't had a good throwing QB in 7 years and can't gamble everything on Speight.

but didn't have time to post it. He looks OK but a lot of his throws were very easy and his arm strength isn't great. Harbaugh sees potential, so we will run with it.

But that's about the extent of it. He seems to only have on trajectory, and still the ball hangs quite a bit and takes a while to get to the receiver. I don't like how he throws when rolling to the right (basically jump throws), and I just don't see the arm there to get an offer.

I wasn't high on the kid from Texas, but I'd offer him before I'd offer Gordon from what I see on film. But maybe they saw something different in person.

Seems like Gordon and Carter (the Texas kid) would be likely preferred walk-on offers if the higher rated guys who are all already committed somewhere fall through.

Speaking of Texas. I'm in Austin for a class and was listening to local sports talk and I will say that they are terrified of Harbaugh. Apparently he has reached out to their QB commit from New Mexico. It was nice to hear such good things about Michigan so far from Big Ten country.

Does anyone know how high Jim Harbaugh was rated in high school? I know they didn't have rating services back then. Im just wondering if Harbaugh is looking to make a no name QB a superstar. Maybe someone thought Jim wasn't good enough for college. Just a thought.

He would still be in school in either state.  California colleges are actually quite well subsidized for in-state students.  Michigan is, of course, one of the most expensive public colleges in America.  For example, Michigan's out-of-state tuition and fees (not room and board) is just shy of $42,000 a year.  In-state tuition at UCSB (the first public school I looked up) is $13,700.  I suspect UCLA would be a bit more expensive, but nothing like out-of-state tuition.  That's almost a $30K difference--per year.

Why in the world would Michigan be interested in the kid if he has no offers? He has no offers for a reason, right? It just seems like a stab in the dark by Jim's son.

I imagine there is probably a decent amount of documentation lying around for who Michigan was going after with Hoke.  So, I can't believe it is starting from scratch.  However, even with all of that, I am really impressed they've covered all the guys people know about, discovered a few new committed guys to go after, and then happened to find a guy that's flying so far under the radar that no one else has given him an offer.

That's some mad Harbaugh, dude.  Love it!
