Another year on the bubble
This is getting exhausting. You'd think for $3.37 million a year Michigan would get more of a return on its investment. What's the point of all this? Yes the refs screwed us tonight, but where is the rebounding, the boxing out, the defense, the toughness? It's the same problems over and over every single year under Beilein. There's no 1st round NBA talent on this team so I kind of expected this, but that's the problem. The B1G being terrible this year makes this season all the more frustrating.

Or should I make my own thread?
February 19th, 2017 at 9:58 PM ^
Where's the defense? Uh good luck playing defense when they tag you with 28 foul calls in a single game
February 19th, 2017 at 9:59 PM ^
I'm talking in terms of a macro view over the last decade. Beilein teams consistently are among the worst in the country. I acknowledged the refs tonight were horrid.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:08 PM ^
Beilein teams consistently are among the worst in the country.
WTF?
February 19th, 2017 at 10:09 PM ^
Defensively.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:12 PM ^
That's still hyperbole. We're typically around 70-100 nationally out of 350 or so teams.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:14 PM ^
No we're not. I just looked at the advanced stats. I'm sure Brian can back that up.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:44 PM ^
I just looked at the advanced stats.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:01 PM ^
Yeah, that's fucking terrible. And the 2014 number is laughable considering Michigan had the worst defense in the conference by anyone not named Rutgers. Read it and weap. 185 in adj defense efficency in 2014. So lol at Pomery.
http://mgoblog.com/category/tags/basketball-defense
The Wolverines may have pulled out a victory against a Nebraska team playing without its only viable post player, but they didn't do it by solving any of their problems on defense; the Huskers scored 1.21 points per possession, a hair below the average performance against M's defense in conference play. Michigan is now 185th in adjusted defensive efficiency; their worst finish under John Beilein was 120th in his first year in Ann Arbor.
Through five conference games, Michigan has the worst Big Ten defense by 8.9 points per 100 possessions; B1G opponents are making 52.7% of their twos and 55.3%(!!!) of their threes—and they're rebounding 34.7% of their misses. Michigan is great at not fouling and above-average at stealing the ball; they're somewhere between below-average and terrible at everything else.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:02 PM ^
You just said the defenses were among the worst in the country.
They were just proven to not be.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:08 PM ^
...Our defense is pretty freaking bad. Being ranked in the 100s on Ken Pom in adjusted defense isn't something to write home about.
Many people don't give a damn about all the small schools like Texas Abilene Christian or the like so the 350 number is a bit misleading.
I would be willing to bet that Michigan has one of the worst defenses out of all the power 5 schools.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:08 PM ^
This is comical. You flat-out lied, and even after being called out on it, still want to argue your fradulent point.
The statistics I cited above can be accessed at KenPom's site. They are complete season averages. In contrast, the totally awesome anecdote you found is a snapshot taken early in one season - a season where we finished in the top 100 in defensive efficiency (see above), and won the B1G title.
I mean, if you want to argue that Beilein's defenses could be somewhat better than they have been, sure, that can be discussed. But no - you wanted to tell a whopper and hope no one called you out on it.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:19 PM ^
Which is terrible. Which is why Brian has gone on Webb's show and repeatedly lamented how atrocious Beilein's teams are on defense. Being #88 in defense is essentially saying Michigan is the worst power 5 team at defense in the country. have fun with that man. Keep defending it. LOL.

February 20th, 2017 at 11:24 AM ^
It's me upvoting. Maizen is the only sane one on this ite when it comes to JB.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:28 PM ^
You know that we won the Big Ten title outright, reached the Elite Eight and were a last-second 3-pointer away from the Final Four that season?
February 19th, 2017 at 10:09 PM ^
You're drunk. I'm far from an apologist but to call his teams some of the worst in the country is embarassing.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:18 PM ^
Good lord man, they kept Minnesota to 44% shooting. They've actually been one of the better defenses in the conference the last month or so.
February 19th, 2017 at 9:58 PM ^
"Michigan won two out of three games this week and the third went to OT. What gives?"
February 19th, 2017 at 9:59 PM ^
you seen the rest of the season?
February 19th, 2017 at 10:01 PM ^
Great. They've won 1 road game in the last year. What gives.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:06 PM ^
It's very obnoxious to bring up John Beilein coaching speculation right now. This team just had their best week of the season since the MSG games and has solidly played themselves in the tourney barring an epic collapse.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:10 PM ^
He makes $3.37 million dollars a year. I think he can handle it. Especially considering this team is staring 8-10 right down the barrel.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:15 PM ^
Let's just fast forward to the part of the conversation where you suggest Archie Miller/Greg Marshall/Tony Bennett as replacements and I'll try to keep a straight face.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:34 PM ^
Yeah, because none of those guys want a massive pay raise and to coach at school with the resources that Michigan has. I bet you thought Harbaugh was never leaving the NFL either.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:25 PM ^
Strawman argument. Hyperbole about worst defense in the nation. Upvoting all your own posts. You're on fire
February 19th, 2017 at 11:28 PM ^
Can't offer a counterpoint, can't recognize reality isn't far from hyperbole, downvotes all my posts. You're on fire.
February 20th, 2017 at 1:29 AM ^
I haven't downvoted you once an Harbaugh and Beilein have nothing in common
February 20th, 2017 at 6:13 AM ^
Almost forgot the "but we got Harbaugh" argument that pays no attention to the incredibly unique circumstances that got him here. It's funny that this is the go-to factoid for Beilein replacements but then in other threads we laugh at NFL teams who talk about backing up the money truck to give JH a much more prestigious job.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:17 PM ^
I mean, they are just as likely staring 10-8 down the barrel. But again, you have two talking points and you are not budging from them.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:26 PM ^
just in spite of you I hope they fire JB and hire the most mediocre coach of all time. I'd love to view your threads after every loss then.
February 20th, 2017 at 11:25 AM ^
And if that happens, fire that guy to until you find the right fit. The AD has unlimited resources to play that game.
February 20th, 2017 at 5:54 AM ^
You've been waiting for the other shoe to drop.....So they were jobbed by the officials. It's the B1G so what else is new?
February 20th, 2017 at 5:54 AM ^

February 19th, 2017 at 9:59 PM ^
I really wish we would recruit at a higher level.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:00 PM ^
I'd have some peace if we could do this.
February 19th, 2017 at 9:59 PM ^
We can do this if we lose to Rutgers.
Losing to a tournament team, on the road in overtime with insanely bad refs is not a reason to start a fire Beilein thread. This is a bad thread.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:02 PM ^
Beilein's made it out of the 1st weekend of the NCAA tournament twice in 10 years. He's missed it 3 times. I'm doing it now.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:16 PM ^
So he makes the tourney most of the time, and took Michigan to heights the program hasn't seen since the late 80s/early 90s.
I get you're angry, but this whole thread is just you yelling at everyone. Feel free to tap out for the rest of the season. it's fine.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:24 PM ^
Because comparing what Beilein has done to the worst era in UM basketball history should be some new sort of standard? I don't get you people who have no expectations for this program. it's embarrassing.
Michigan made two bad coaching hires. It happens. Happened in football too. But we don't compare everything Harbaugh does to the rich rod and hoke years. Yet we do with beilein. Why? This isn't a charity. Dude needs to stop being a freaking bubble team every year.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:29 PM ^
He's about to become the winningest coach in Michigan basketball history, so we are actually comparing him to the best era in UM basketball as well. It's crazy how such a shitty coach can be statistically the winningest coach in our history.
February 19th, 2017 at 11:31 PM ^
He's also going to be the losingest.
February 20th, 2017 at 11:27 AM ^
Haha, love it!
Most wins and Most losses or in other words, JB is average.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:01 PM ^
Calm down. A week ago we were all singing praises to beilein after crucifing him the previous week. We've missed out on recruits for two years in a row with guys like Chatman, Irvin, Donnal, and Doyle. Beilein is not used t turnover like what we've had and the talent not living up or regressing like the last two teams have. It is frustrating but I've seen improvement defensevly and there is hope next year to be great with Matthews, Robinson, MAAR, Wilson, and Wagner as well as a talented freshmen class coming. If we're on the buble next year, good bye Beilein.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:04 PM ^
So we're giving him a pass for missing out on recruits? We're giving him a pass for having roster turnover in a sport that is filled with it? We're once again on the "just wait until next year" line?
Nah, I'm done not having any expectations for this program. Dude is making 3.37 million each season. Time to deliver some results.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:09 PM ^
I'm frustrated too, but basketball coaches are harder to find than football. Look at Texas for goodness sake, they are way worse than before since making a coaching change! Next year is do or die. Beilein has done good things for us and has built a positive, strong atmosphere with the talent and potential to be good. I've seen improvement from this team overtime, and that's the sign of a good coach. If we beat Rutgers, Nebraska, and pick up a B1G tourny win then we're in IMO. We'd need anothe rwin over either Purdue, Northwestern, or multiple tournament wins to be a lock in the tournament.
February 19th, 2017 at 10:47 PM ^
He does give you results. Tom Cream makes 3.2 and his team is out of the tourney. Matta's makes 3.4 and his team will miss the tourney for 2 straight years. Izzo is on the freaking bubble and he gets paid like a king. This is a flawed team, but it's not like the program is in freefall.
