5* West Coast kids are tough pulls when we've been working on them for a long time (Garnett for example). Armstead just decommitted, probably has dozens of schools now talking to him and the only basis for this talk is a mention of Michigan possibly getting a visit. I won't go so far as to say we have no chance but the odds of pulling him aren't good. Until something actually happens with his recruitment, best not to get too attached.

??? Either this is a reading FAIL or you're referring to another thread because nobody on this thread said there's "no hope." All they've said is that the odds for west coast guys are not generally in our favor due to distance, and that it's prudent to not get too excited until he schedules a visit. There's an important difference between "no hope" and that.

He was offered by Texas, Oklahoma, and Oregon after his decommitment.  If you read his twitter account he seems to be enjoying all the new followers he has.  Also, Notre Dame and Alabama are the only confirmed visits so far.

"I have my visit to Notre Dame this weekend and I'm visiting Alabama (Nov. 4)," he said. "I'm also looking at Cal, Washington and Michigan for my last few visits, but I think after word gets out that I've de-committed, I think a few more schools will come calling as well and I'm definitely open to that."

If you read into that quote, we are mentioned as a potential visit, but may get bumped for someone else.  I do hope we get a visit from him - he would be a great addition to our 2012 class.

isn't this part of Hoke's objective in returning Michigan to its past, namely OL.  Michigan OL players were always good NFL prospects.  Long, Hutchinson, Backus and the list could go on and on.  I would never rule us out of getting a 5* no matter where they come from.

I asked Ace and Tom about this yesterday in an email and on twitter, as I was excited to read the kids comments.both told me to not be excited until he actually schedules a visit to AA.
I prefer to be exited. But know they are right.

The article clearly says he "might" schedule a visit - that's a long way from IS visiting.  I won't get excited until he actually is on campus visiting.  Still, if anyone could pull him away from the West Coast it would be Hoke and Mattison.  But, if I were betting on the last o-lineman in this class it would be either Garnett or Banner.  That would be more than fine with me.

This is a response to Indiana Blue: There's no reason not to get excited, big-time prospects are obviously interested in Michigan again and that's a great sign. The more we get, the quicker we'll be back competing for B1G and BCS titles. The thing to keep in mind is Backus and Long are both from the state of Michigan and we've typically been able to successfully recruit anyone we want from Michigan. Hutchinson is from Florida so we have gotten some big-time recruits from far away.

Not taking the over-excited route, however, want to point out a few things in our favor. 1) He did have contact early soph year with Hoke while at SDSU. 2) As stated in other news outlets " The five-star offensive tackle wants to play on the defensive line in college, and that's big role in his recruitment." USC wanted him for OT, but I believe be are still looking at another D-Line, with spot open from OBrien to UT.  3) A big part of his decision is to balance football and hoops. "Any school that won’t consider me as a basketball player, I won't consider them."  He has seen that UofM is open to that as we already have Coach Beilein as a big part of our recruitment with Zach Banner, and our hoops is a strong up&coming program for a recruit of his type.
Don't count your chickens, of course, but I think there is a decent shot here.

What's the latest on Jordan Diamond.  I got the feeling a while back that he was a heavy Michigan lean.  Haven't heard much about him lately other than him visiting other schools.  Is UM no longer considerd the favorite?
