Another solid outing by Devin Gardner
Looks like DG led Inkster to a 35-7 victory last night. Here's his line:
Passing: 11-19 163 yards 2 TDs
Rushing: 11 carries 104 yards

I just don't see how you redshift him. Even if he is not the starter you have to think Roch Rod will want to get him some playing time to prepare him. I've seem him play in person and he is a perfect fit for our offense.

he'll be a true freshman. And they'll have the scholarships to use.
See Tate Forcier. Likely the MOST game ready true freshman in the country. Do you think he will be better next year?
Do you think the same would go for DG?
Why use up eligibility of players when you have the ability to hold onto them a little longer and make them that much better.

we redshirt him to get 2 years between tate and him. we redshirt him because he may not actually be ready since he'll be playing against college players not HS players. we redshirt him because he'll be learning a new offense with new players as a QB nonetheless. we redshirt him because if most coaches had their way, they'd prefer to redshirt the vast majority of their freshmen so they can get acclimated to college life. we redshirt him so when he is available to play he will be physically ready to take hit after hit. we redshirt him because next year we can actually afford to redshirt him having both tate and denard there. etc etc etc.

Sometimes i think people are incredibly short sighted about this issue. Even if DG is amazing as a freshman why would you burn up his eligibility when you have an equally amazing gb in Tate

he said redshift Gardner, not expose him to redshifted light. He's assuming that Gardner is the speed of light, and if we redshift him he'll lose his energy, and since light is massless he'll be more injury prone.

There is absolutely no way you don't redshirt Gardner. And I'm certain DG expects to be a redshirt. I think the bigger problem comes when Tate's a senior and DG's redshirt sophomore. That might be a sticky issue.

The last hundred DG threads have instantly turned into redshirt/don't redshirt threads. I suggest that going forward all Devin Gardner threads carry the title "Should Devin Gardner Redshirt?" This has been the only topic of discussion irt this kid forever. There is no new ground being broken here. Both sides of the argument have been covered thoroughly. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Inkster just barely gets into the playoffs and are now in the semis.
If you watched the Cinci/WVU game it was interesting to see them talk about Collaros and his 30-0 record at Stubenville and how much of a football town it is.
The improvement DG has made in his passing from last year is a great sign for us. Hopefully he continues that path and things will be interesting if he enrolls early. If he doesn't it would be hard to make up the ground on two returning QBs especially if we get into a bowl game and get those extra practices this year.

The question regarding a RS for Gardner is largely going to depend if he is an early enrollee or not.
On another note, this weeks Sports Ill. had him featured in the "Faces in the Crowd" section for his performance in that Stebenville game. No mention of his U of M ties.

I'm not exactly sure where the hell that newspaper got its stats. Tim and I were there filming and taking notes. Gardner ran 11 times for 74 yards (one was for -12) and was 14/34 for 171 and 2TDs

Here's how you don't redshirt him, if he's the best option at QB. The guy rushed for 22 TDs and passed for 26 in only his junior year. Can't wait to see the final stats this year. Yes, there's a big difference between HS and college. But this guy is just a beast.

I don't know why someone would neg this, this is a really good point. There are plenty of studs in high school that don't turn out to be good college players. Obviously there's a strong correlation, but it is a different game and the vast majority of players - especially quarterbacks - need time to adjust, i.e. redshirting.

Even if he is the best option at QB, He'd be the third freshman starting at QB in 3 years. We need some continuity and experience, which Tate/D-Rob will provide us.
Gardner will get his moment to shine, but we seriously need to think about the long-term future and not the immediate future. Even if he has the highest ceiling and greater talent from the offset, he will still be a true freshman trying to adjust to the game on the run. Give him that redshirt and watch how well he will do two years down the road.
