Another Night Game - Michigan at Northwestern (Oct 8)
Apparently Michigan Football will participate in two night games this season.

I've only been to a few big ten stadiums, but I have to say NW was one of the more disappointing. The stadium was empty until they started to take the lead, then people came pouring in and aking fun of M fans, then immediately left when M regained the lead. I think soldier field would have a much better turnout, and would have many more M fans, as they seem to be highly concentrated in Chitown.
It may be a dissapointing high school like stadium but at least the place is always half Michigan fans so there's no shortage of friendly faces.
That fact alone makes me want to take my first road game there. I wouldn't have to fear for my life like in Columbus and Champaign.

Certainly wasn't that way when I was there.
I guess I have the 2000 game stuck in my head where the president of Illinois wrote UM a letter of apology for the way their fans acted. (Throwing rocks and whatever other crap they could at the MMB and the tailgators before the game.) I had a couple friends in the band that went to that game and they told me they felt like they were in Columbus.
If things have improved, that's great.
IIRC, it was the Illinois night game that year that was absolutely horrible. I was in the band that year, but didn't travel with them, and I still remember the incredibly horrifying stories retold by the MMB members when they returned.
They are nice fans, but have a superiority complex. If they are losing, they will harass you about the quality of a Michigan education, which, really guys? I understand giving us a hard time due to our recent lack of success on the field, but attacking a very good school for their quality of degree? Just seems desperat to me.
That's the most hilarious thing I've heard in my life. There is NO school that can hold itself above the University of Michigan in terms of education. Private schools don't give you a better education, they give you a better set of free rides because of who you met.
Truthfully, there's a fairly large (probably 50 or even more) universities in the US that are all very comperable in terms of top-tier education. Seperating NU and UM is like talking shit because UM got the #1 overall recruit and OSU got the #2; there's almost zero difference in quality. Obviously they're very different (OL and QB?) but they're both in that top tier.
Yom Kippur ends at sundown on the 8th. Not sure what time that will be in October but maybe it means catching the game now that its at 8pm.
You need to do what I do for Yom Kippor games - DVR the game, go on complete media blackout (no internet , bberry, TV, radio, etc., and answer the phone by saying "if you tell me the score you are dead to me. Hello?"). Then wait until after sundown, get your fill of lox, bagels and whatever else you choose to break the fast with, and tell everyone that you are breaking the fast with that they are free to stay as long as they want at your house, but you will be holed up in the den. That;s how I do it. True story.
Get your tickets quickly. This should be a sellout and a good game.
Any method to go about doing this if I don't have season tickets or is something along the lines of Stubhub my only hope?

and who fears for their life in Champaign? Another stadium that's usually only half full.
My one lingering memory of Champaign is seeing scalpers walking around with (quite literally) two-inch-thick stacks of tickets trying to sell 'em for 30 bucks a pop. Pretty amazing stuff.
Damn, I'm going to this because the Chicago Marathon is the next day, and I was planning on seeing michigan play then wake up and run the marathon. Gonna be a late night, now, but totally worth it.
You never sleep much the night before a big race. Just get plenty of sleep on Friday night. Should be a good weekend.
How do we get tickets for this?
Do the Alumni have some kind of group special since there's a large alumni concentration in Chicago? Anyone?

from the opposition ticket office at IU and Purdue. Now every year I get an application for season tickets to football and basketball for BOTH schools ... lol.
I also ordered 2 NW tickets with my season ticket renewal (plus 2 more from a friend's app) so I'll be in Evanston for the game ! (Also Iowa road trip in November) .... cannot wait !!!

I have always had good luck getting them from N'w athletic dept site. Trick is knowing when they are posted (they go somewhat fast considering everyone on this board is buying them up)
I find NW a great place to watch UM play. Every seat has a great view of the field, the stadium is rarely packed, scalper tickets are cheap, you don't have to worry about getting in a fight, kids can safely play on the promenade, Evanston is an awesome town, UM almost always wins,you can make a weekend of it by staying in the city and taking the L to game, etc, etc, etc.
Your Season Ticket RNW had an option to purchase NW tickets. You can login and maybe it is still there. I know as a Chicago native I didn't screw around and scooped some up.
Awesome! I bought 2 for this game when I renewed our season tickets. Has anyone taken the train to the game? That's what I'm planning on doing for now.
I know my brother and his friends did that and they said it was a blast. I've always wanted to that, might have to try it this year...
This is going to feel a bit like seven straight home games to start the Hoke era.
Western, ND, Eastern, San Diego State and Minnesota, all at home taking us through September into October, followed by Northwestern in Evanston and then the bus ride to Spartytown.
Disagree slightly. NW in Evanston might have a home-game type feel because of the large Michigan crowd but playing in East Lansing is not a home game regardless of distance travelled. I doubt that UNC considers playing at Duke to be a home game for basketball merely because of the distance. I consider EL to be a relatively hostile crowd.
EDIT: Didn't neg you though -- I think your comment pertained to this thread in that you were factoring in the NW venue to your line of thinking.

Damn it. I can't go. I am running in the Chicago marathon the next morning. No way I am staying up for a night game.
i had the @ NW game as a "maybe." guess i will move it over to the loss column. this is not based on anything more than gut feelings.

Of the game about 10 years ago against NW, when A-Train fumbled on that key drive. I remember being physically sick afterwards, couldn't even bring myself to watch the NFL the next day.
That was an afternoon game, which ended after 5pm. Tough loss. I was there with my then-girlfriend (now wife) and another couple (NW fans).

Since we had our son 4 years ago, my wife and I DVR all of the games and go on a COMPLETE media blackout, so that we can watch the game at night after our son falls asleep. (We re-watch them the next day so that our son can watch them and foster his lvoe of all things Michigan, but watching a game live with a kid is too hard, if you want to obsessively watch).
These media black-outs are damn hard and damn stressful. We turn off our cell phones, blackberries, internet, TVs, radios and all other forms of communications a few minuted before kick-off. We avoid going to any place that could have a TV on, and make sure to avoid seeing anyone who might potentially slip and mention anything related to college football. We even go so far as to screen our calls, and only answer if it is someone (our parents, by bro-in-law, and one or two others) who (a) do not give a shit about Michigan football, (b) understand and respect the rules of Media Blackout, and (c) know that if they slip up and even hint at the score, they will be dead to me. Even still, we answer the phone with "If you know the score of the Michigan game, don't say a word. Hello?"
Yeah, we are sort of nuts, but it works for us, as it allows us to watch the games as they were meant to be watched (when not attending live or at a bar) - on our couch, uninterrupted by our kid, beer and game food in hand and curses hurled at the refs/coaches/opposing players freely without worry of teaching our son works that he shouldn't yet be using.
So, short stort long, day games are not easy for us, and night games are awesome. That's all.
I admire your dedication. I too use the Media Blackout strategy when necessary.
