Another ND Player in Trouble for an Alcohol Related Offense
Yet another ND player has gotten into trouble with the law for an alcohol related offense.
DaVaris Daniels, a sophomore-to-be receiver, was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor on May 13, according to police records in his hometown of Vernon Hills.
Daniels was one of 29 individuals cited at an address that matches his own. Police said they were responding to a call for an ambulance when "all subjects were found to be participating in an underage party and had consumed alcohol while under the age of 21."
"I'm aware of the citation DaVaris received and will be speaking with him about the matter," Irish coach Brian Kelly said in a statement released late Wednesday. "Any team-related discipline that may be forthcoming will be handled internally."
The offense itself is relatively minor and the partygoers should be commended for calling an ambulance but the sheer amount of alcohol fueled run-ins with the law under Brian Kelly's tenure has to raise some eyebrows for a program that's so prideful of being better than everyone else. Whether it be just bad luck or something indicative of the program as a whole remains to be seen.

I agree in that I am a lot more willing to look the other way on underage drinking when the violators are showing enough responsiblity and discretion to keep themselves out of the eyes of authorities.
The bummer about this case is that they got nailed after making the decision to seek medical help for a fellow partier who overindulged. Some places are passing "amnesty" laws so the "but we could get in legal trouble!" worries never need cross the mind of someone who is on the fence about whether to get help for someone with signs of alcohol poisoning or overintoxication.
No one that has a brain should be surprised that college kids are drinking, people are shocked by how often the ND players are getting caught.
I don't care that these kids are drinking, hell i drank all through college and i am sure most of us did. The point is i never got caught because i wasn't an idiot about it. Like hart said, these kids either have very bad luck or are using poor judgement when it comes to where they are drinking.

I don't think anyone is going to get too worked up about someone drinking before they were 21, but I suppose if we're going to talk about "teachable moments" (as Kelly apparently terms them), Brian Kelly has taught us that, at least at ND, being a serial offender like Floyd still lands you at a good draft position and with a multi-million dollar contract.
Having said that, it isn't terribly shocking that the frequency of these offenses among ND players is rather significant. Apparently, the message is that you won't be missing much playing time if any at all. I will say that, if I see Rees and Calabrese on the field in their first game, then obviously being disciplined by Brian Kelly is like being disciplined by a dead, purple mackerel.
Only the things you didn't do are cause for concern.

This wasn't near a college campus, it was a house party in a relatively quiet suburb of Chicago. I grew up a town over from Vernon Hills. If I had to guess there were probably a significant number of high school students there that the police were trying to make an impression on. Stevenson High School (Lincolnshire, IL not in MI) has been in the news a lot recently for students doing stupid stuff and I would guess the police in the area are being a little less compassionate to keep themselves and the area out of the spotlight.

People in college drink this is not surprising. 85(?) scholarship players on a roster odds are a few a year will get MIP's.
South Bend police are generally considered over-reaching dicks when it comes to off-campus parties.

Still, cops usually let kids off if they were responsible to call an ambulance. Punishing kids for calling 911 when all they were doing was drinking underage is pretty dickish.
If they were aware there was a ND football player there, it puts them in a tough spot... cite him, or get criticized/punished for giving him special treatment. Same applies for ticketing everyone else there.
True, it's probably much easier to critique from the outside. Still, they're kids first it would just be nice to see them treated as such.
I was thinking the same thing. Kids were at least responsible enough to call the police. Hopefully no one was really hurt or injured. Also, it's not just football players getting caught by the police. It has happened to numerous other sports players there. They are tougher on kids drinking then UofM it seems.
Underage drinking is pretty pervaisive on all campuses and amongst athletes and non-athletes alike.
I hate ND like most of you and think its better to pin stuff on Kelly that he has a relation to, like the death of the video assistant and the poor female from St. Mary's who committed suicide after being sexually assaulted/raped and everyone at ND squirmed to cover it up.

I could have gotten one of these almost every weekend while I was in school. I'm sure most of you could say the same.
I know this happened in his hometown, but the South Bend Police must be actively looking and targeting these football players, which is completely absurd. You never know, their could be a "Rosenberg-like" character in the South Bend Police Department or local government that does not like Brian Kelly. As much as I'd love to say that was just a joke, it could somehow be true.
I was thinking something along these lines, although I think that, if you're right, it has more to with the St. Mary's co-ed situation/general asshatery of Notre Dame players over the last 150 years.
Put me in the "so what" category. Out of everything there, the Rees situation is the worst, because a player who is supposed to be a leader pretty much melted down under pressure, much like he does on the field. Floyd was an idiot, too.
As for the rest of them, they're just college kids caught drinking. They didn't get DUI's or assault anyone. I love hooting on ND as much as anyone, but they are going to have to give me a better reason than a few guys getting caught drinking.

Are fat jokes still cool? I know we all collectively roll our eyes when we see a Hoke is fat joke by some Sparty/Buckeye/EDSBS, but somehow it's funny when Weis is the target?
Most of the colleges really want to reduce the drinking age back to 18 because they don't want to be responsible for having to use up so many of their resources to enforce the 21 year old age limit for drinking. It is a joke on just about every college campus anyway, and there has been some movement to get the age reduced. We will see what happens.
Not going to happen. College presidents raised the issue a few years ago and were rebuked by a number of folks.

States also lose highway money if they lower too- tough politically to lower it with interest groups too.
No one disputes the universal quality of underage drinking at a university; it's just nice to see them rack up a bunch of Stonums, whereas we just had one.
