This would be it.
landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
This would be it.
I am going to have a damn seizure! This is not "fun" anymore, this is not "hip" anymore, this is not "game-changing" anymore. I am sick and tired of this absolute garbage the Athletic Department continually pulls to "revolutionize" Michigan football. I have news for you, Michigan football has never been about "revolutionizing" anything! Michigan football is tradition, stoicism, and most of all, CLASS. If Dave Brandon is so intent on making money, he might as well throw some damn Hooter shirts on the cheerleaders while he's at it, if, that is, he will even fork over the money to fly them to the GAME! We have had how many jerseys in the past twelve months? I bet most of you don't even know because you've LOST COUNT. GODDAMN IT.
Michigan football has never been about trying to look like the best, because we knew our jerseys were the best. Every red-blooded American knew Michigan's jersey and helmet; a fact which helped Michigan to become the brand it is. I don't know about you, but I don't want to follow OREGON'S lead. Oregon for God's sake, who probably played rugby until 1990 for all I know. I don't want to see Michigan players prancing out into the Big House a few years down the line looking like a bunch of hipsty nancy boys with musical gloves and glitter on their helmets.
Stop buying these jerseys, send the Athletic Department some mail, and let us band together to stop this madness! Just like Dave Brandon's failure to send the MARCHING BAND TO THE SECOND BIGGEST GAME OF THE SEASON, a concerted effort by the fanbase can and will discourage any further denigration of the Michigan brand.
For all of you who are new fans, I hope that you will look back at the HISTORY of Michigan football and remember that is what made the program what it is today. Please, do not support this ridiculous money grab and stand by tradition. As we have seen in the past year, one supposedly "slight" change or alteration quickly emboldens those who care more about the almighty dollar than the success, tradition, and pride of this great program.
We should ALWAYS respect tradition and always respect those who came before us. We have to adapt to changing trends. And the biggest changing trend is that of being flashy for the TV and most importantly RECRUITS. Recruits eat this type of stuff up and therefore we must do what makes us appealing. Even if it means dressing up in less than desriable uniforms for ONE game.
Really? USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, etc. They don't seem to be having trouble recruiting at all and I haven't seen them with gimmicky uniforms. If you are the Oregons, Arizona States, and Marylands of the world, the B-level teams, possibly. But NOT MICHIGAN.
As much as we would like to think Michigan is godsend and every recruit should come here regardless of who they are, we are not the entire package.
We are a tough school with hard majors, bipolar weather and no sandy beaches. Needless to say, people at Michigan have other passions without football in their lives. We becomes successful in many professions.
Sure what I said about education applies to a lot of those schools but lets be honest. Can you really pair USC women with ours? 17 year olds look at that I'm told.
Can you ask Michigan where our Coaches' trophies are and compare us to Alabama?
Michigan is not what it used to be. Once we accept that we can move on to fix our flaws and make ourselves marketable.
Therefore we need gimmicks like jerseys to peak interest in people unfamiliar with the tradition and excellence Michigan has had in the past century.
No sandy beaches? Have your ever seen American Pie 2?
In the 90's people looked at USC and saw a bad place to be. It was right near South Central, and nobody wanted to be part of the Gangsta scene and risk getting mugged/murdered. Combine that with an inconsistent on the field performance, (starting in 1990) 8-4-1, 6-5-1, 8-5, 8-3-1, 9-2-1, 6-6, 6-5, 8-5, 6-6, 5-7. This also included an 8 year losing streak to UCLA and they fared poor against Notre Dame too. In Pete Carrol's first year they ended up going 6-6. They were hardly the dominant program we know today.
Alabama may not have had crime, but their football team was a joke for the better part of this decade too. Starting with 2000, here is their records: 3-8, 7-5, 10-3, 4-9, 6-6. They had a 10 win season in 2005, that was vacated for violations. In 2006 they went 6-6, and vacated those 6 wins. Hell in Saban's first year they went 6-6. All of that included losses to Auburn for 6 years in a row.
But then something changed for both programs. I'll give you a hint, it's a 7 letter word that starts with a W.
In the end most recruits don't give a shit about jerseys, stadiums, education, etc. etc. They only want to go somewhere that wins a lot. USC and Alabama still had Coaches trophies and beautiful woman, but weren't destination schools.
You're right, Michigan isn't/hasn't been what it used to be. But that's because we haven't won a Big Ten championsip in almost a decade, because we had 1 win against OSU in the 2000's, and because we've lost more Big Stage games than we've won. USC, and Alabama didn't need gimmicks to turn themselves around, they just started winning again, and that's all Michigan needs to do (which we're on the road to accomplishing)
USC has thought about it, and may have changed their helmet colors, but has never busted out the Alternate jerseys.
Alabama has technically worn Pro-Combat uniforms, but here they are compared to regular:
basically all they did was add a camouflage design on the numbers and add an A patch
Oklahoma changed their helmet color for one game, and took Sooners off the jersey...for one game.
That's all the experimentation these schools have done with "Pro Combat Uniforms" and they really were just one time appearances. They haven't been busted out since and the schools aren't designing new jerseys every time the school does something special, which in Dave Brandon's eyes includes going to a Bowl
Not camouflage. Houndstooth in honor of Bear Bryant (fedora hat).
Did you just call Oregon a "B-level team" ?
They are a B-level team. Three really good years doesn't make them suddenly a traditional A-level powerhouse, unless you also think that Sparty is historically the #1 program in the state.
Well considering he's an MSU troll masquerading as a UM fan, he probably does think that way
This is not about me young man. This is about the continuation of traditions and a team which I hold dear to my heart. I say "young" because your words appear to be quite similar to what I would expect to come from my 14 year granddaughter during an argument when she lacks a proper response, "Whatever". If you cannot approach a reasonable argument with a reasonable response, please hold your childish repudiations to yourself.
You are the best poster on this board, period.
As long as it's just one game per year, I say let the kids have their fun with it. We know it's for the money, but if it's something the players are happy with and many of the school aged set, I'm fine with that too.
How's this for reasonable, Herm, my man?
I'd like to see five more pictures of yourself to prove you're real.
I don't think we need all this jersey foofaraw and argle bargle.
But I respectfully beg to differ that Michigan has never been about revolutionizing the game of football. Fielding H Yost's point-a-minute teams and Fritz Crisler's Mad Magicians were as revolutionary as anything in football history.
It wasn't until Bo that Michigan football became synonymous with 3 yards and a cloud of dust. And even Bo was an about face from the laxity of Bump Elliott. "Those who stay" was a response to the attrition suffered as Bo upset the apple cart in the football program.
Respect for traditions is important, but not at the cost of becoming stale and inflexible.
Thank you for your thoughtful and reasonable response. Excuse me, I should have differentiated between on-the-field changes and marketing gimmicks (granted, some of the commercial changes in the 1960-1970s proved to be fruitful, though those changes were made in the midst of an overall downturn in the prominence of Michigan football, not as the program was again approaching a pinnacle of its prowess).
I am definnitely on board with the Hooters shirts on the cheerleaders.
But this is 2012, most of the players could give two shits about Michigan football 30 years ago. This is about the kids, kids don't come to Michigan because of tradition, some may but most fall in love with the new facilities, coaches, campus, big house, etc. in this day and age in college football, kids don't care about Tom Harmon winning the heisman, hell, half were under 5 when Woodson won the heisman! Kids like shit like this...just have to deal with it, as long as they put a great team on the field with great character, I'm fine with stuff like this.
I kinda like the Hooters idea.
From the front it's OK (I do like the non-outlined numbers), but the sides and back . . . ugh. The maize strip is awful.
We've got to stop doing this. Pick a road uniform and stick with it.
Agreed, from the side and back it just seems like too much maize and not enough blue. Possibly a blue strip (or partial strip) on the left and right side of the pants would of helped out.
Yeah, there is something just horribly awkward about it, particularly from the back. Maybe my femaleness is making me notice it, but it really makes his ass look huge. Perhaps it is the virtual model making it look weird. But it really has that "mom jean" look from the back. New trend, perhaps? Also, that huge maize strip looks like trying to edge closer and closer to a full out maize design. Make it stop!
Say what you want about the jerseys, but those are possibly the best gloves I've ever seen.
Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Dewey beats Truman.
2012 Football Uniform Plan: Player numbers on the famed winged helmet will be suspended after the season opener in Dallas
It was a cute little novelty last year, but I didn't want them as a permanent thing.
I don't care about the number, but please don't wear gray face masks ever again.
Except they aren't on that mock-up of the season opener. I am confused.
LOVE that undershirt. This whole uniform has officially gotten my approval. A little unsure at first but then I fell in love with it. Already pre-ordered mine.
...that it was a leftover concept after Nike got done designing last year's Spartan uniforms:
We could do the shoulder patches, get some helmet sitckers and with the American flags we'd go "full Sparty." Oh, wait...
Ugh.....enough is enough already
OK, I really don't like that we do this, but this is better than all of the alternative ones we did last year (ND, Sparty, Sugar Bowl). The block M on the shoulders is cool.
People need to remember that these could be (read: have been) much, much worse.
This day can NOT get any worse ugh. (although the block M on the shoulder pads is a nice touch, in my opinion.. just everything else is.. bad).
Don't ever tempt fate like that... ( "To the heavens, fate, ect... One Inch Woody does not speak for the rest of us. Thank-you.)
I kind of like these. Plus. I'm sure the players will love them.
We. Are. Maryland.
No, those jerseys are atrocious.
No. We. Aren't.
Oh, yeah, you're right. Thank god, I was worried for a bit. I was confused because this will be the sixth different uniform Michigan has used in under a year.
A: Would DB be uniform happy if they weren't being sold?
B: Over/Under on 2014 before we see legit-Maize jerseys?
In fairness, we're mostly only uniform-whores on the road. At home we've worn the same uniform except for the UTL game, which was (presumably) a one-off thing.
I don't think maize uniforms are in the works, because that would mean deviating from blue at home, and I can't see that happening.
This is a great uniform. Best since the Sugar Bowl uniforms. Love it, definitely going to pick up a jersey.
Well, it's not hard for them to be the "best since the Sugar Bowl uniforms," since the Sugar Bowl was the last game we played.
We should change into different jerseys at halftime of every game.
That looks sharp. That should be our uniform. There's no need for that maize strip when we already have maize pants.
I second that. I would even be interested to see what it looks like with a maize and blue stripe at the bottom of the sleeve, a la the 2000 road unis. But it might not look as good with the shorter sleeves today.
I like that
Simple look, without the maize it looks great.
Is better than all of the Adidas marketers and designers.
This is pretty much what we wore during the Woodson/Brady years.
Bring back the Block M. It brought us a National Championship.
but definitely an improvement from the road Legacy uniforms from last year. Was not a fan of the white pants.
I'm not really on board with all these alternative jerseys..... OK, truth be told, if any of you have noticed my posting habits on this topic, you know I want to put them on a one-way rocket to the sun and never wear that crap again.
That said.....I actually don't hate these and would be down if these became our regular road jerseys. Simple block numbering, relatively clean lines, and a sharp-looking block M on the shoulder. I might actually like these.
ADIDAS GET THE %$#@! OFF MY LAWN.
I like how it's adidas (no capitalization) in the article. And I like how there's going to be an American flag on the back of the helmet.
HA! DB saying the coaches and players chose this. Color me skeptical about the veracity of that statement.
Article implies no alternate uniforms for the Notre Dame game..? Maybe that's old information, but I thought for sure we'd be in some bumblebee lookin' getup for that game.
What did they have to choose from? "Gentlemen, you can wear these uniforms against Alabama, or you can wear banana suits." Personally, I would love to see our guys all dress up in banana suits.
Or maize gorilla suits. I mean, c'mon. Alabama vs Gorillas? Gorillas win.
do alternate jerseys? Look at Pro Combats or a bunch of Oregon Jersies? No thanks
Per @umichfootball on twitter.
2012 Uniform plan
My feeling the entire day-
Helmet numbers will be suspended after the Cowboys Classic
Now that does warm my heart.
New paint on the wings of the helmet to better highlight it and a creative more durable surface
My god, they're actually doing it. They're going to fuck with the helmets. I'm going to have an internet freak out... and then return to my beer and go on with life. But seriously, I'm guessing some metallic, Oregon-like godlessness.
I am sure they are not going to drastically change the paint on the helmet, just add something to it. Either Matte (everyone is going matte) or a sparkly version of the helmet (just dont do what Notre Dame did).
In my opinion, I dont care as long as we win.
I think they are just going to paint maize on the wings so they stand out more. Right now, they start with a maize helmet and just paint blue around the outline of the wings.
Not a big fan of having the Big Ten patch on our uniforms. At the least, it had better be in our school colors and not that baby blue color the league uses.
The B1G logo is team colors, and I think it looks pretty good. This is a pic of a Nebraska's jersey. http://twitter.com/NUequipment/status/227479914134241280/photo/1
It does look OK on Nebraska's uniform. I just hope it doesn't stand out too much on our home uniforms (since I imagine it'll be in maize).
adidas logos, American flags, B1G patches, "Legend" patches. And don't you dare forget the obligatory bowl-game patch.
If we are just going to whore out the uniform space, please let's get some truly obscene money for it. I'm thinking Goldman Sachs; maybe Haliburton. AIG is locked into Manchester United, isn't it? Or mabye STP. STP used to have a big adverstising budget. Wait I got it; Budweiser. The King of Beers.
Did you say Nebraska or Nascar? There's an awful lot going on with that jersey.
But I believe the Big Ten logos used on fields/courts I've seen have been in the home teams colors. I may have just made that up, but I'm not sure. I feel like I've seen different colored Big logos somewhere.
I am still not entirely sure that this isn't a BHGP pro combat parody. Gloves especially.
I'm tired of this. Honestly, if those were the new, permanent road jersey, I would be kinda-sorta okay with it, despite my lifelong distaste for full shoulder yokes. At least it would be consistent. But we'll probably go back to flipping jerseys all the time, and that will probably include a completely-unecessary alternate home jersey that can only be a downgrade from Michigan's long-running best uniform in football.
I really like this one. Much better than that crap from last year.
We'll also be getting the Big Ten Conference Logo on all of our jerseys, per the football team's twitter.
Now this really sucks.
It's like putting "250 CLK Bluetec" on a mercedes. Just more clutter.
Barf. Better than the UTL and MSU game uniforms, but still. Barf.
Remember the good old days when there was nothing broken to be fixed or played with?
These days it would be "alternate" to go with traditional uniforms. Great pic of Desmond, thanks for posting it. That is the only away uniform we need.
If they mess up the helmet colors.... its time to torch and pitchfork someone.....something.
EDIT: BOTH great pics.
i personally don't mind the uniforms, unless its the sparty clown gear. I think these look cool!
I like them.
Michigan may consider designing a special bowl game jersey if the opportunity presents itself. However, a final determination will be made later in the year.
These are so bad. The only different unis I like are the UTL ones. I do like the numbers on the helmet. But that's it.
No...However, I am so damn sick and tired of new jerseys all the time, but the simple fact is as long as people keep buying every single jersey they come out with...Brandon and company will keep making them
Is it bad that I was a critic of the Road Legacys and I own one just to complete the collection?.....
Not according to Dave Brandon. In fact, according to him, you're the Ultimate Michigan Fan!!! (!!!).
I must be super ultimate since I have the receiver gloves as well.....
It's an addiction, I know.
Actually, I think it would be awesome to own them all. It doesn't mean I think we should be constantly changing because it's pretty much destroyed our tradition of classic uniforms.
I love my all white #1 jersey. You don't need maize stripes or huge block M's everywhere. The maize trim and blue #1 signify everything - classic, tradition, dominance.
While I love the classic look of the uniforms, and that will NEVER change. I think that ONE alternate uniform a year wouldn't hurt. It's a new day and age where recruits love this kind of stuff.
If it brings great players to Michigan who want to say they wore that special uniform against notre dame or alabama then fine with me.
The only thing I'm not crazy about is wearing the special uniforms against the big 3 rivals. Those games should always feature the standard and classic uniforms. THAT is paying homage to the past IMO.
Okay, I've actually digested the whole article now, and there were some notable statements:
The article claims that Michigan will wear "standard home and road uniforms for the rest of the season." If this is true, fabulous. I'll take a single alternate road jersey every year in exchange for consistency the rest of the time, especially if they follow through on the promise to drop the helmet numbers.
The article also suggests that there's some work going on to "normalize" the colors of maize. I am nervous about this. If they change the helmet wing color (they've said they're changing the paint, but we'll see about the color) I'll be very unhappy. Michigan's helmets have been fine. And back when I went to games, just before Nike started putting tackle twill numbers on the jerseys, everything looked great and matched, even if the basketball and hockey uniforms were not consistent with football.
So we'll see. Playing with colors is nervous work.
Hopefully it's just to make the maize the same tint across all the parts of the uniform.
At the Purdue game last year, when it was cloudy but not dark, you could clearly see 4 different tints of "maize" on the uniforms: the helmet wings, the helmet numbers, the jersey numbers, and the pants. It looked amateurish, quite frankly.
I love the non outlined numbers and the block M's on the shoulders, just wish there wasn't the (neon) maize stripe.
i guess i like the team emphasis of the block M on the shoulder and Michigan across the back (instead of players name on the back/# on the arm)... these are def better than the UTL/ MSU bumblebee disaster, but i still dont like them more than the real uni.
...it's not about the money but the national exposure so why in the name of fuck wouldn't we want our ACTUAL uniforms there?
Which one is Dave Brandon?
A. B. C.
4000 Conqueror of the Internet points for C.
A quote from the Urban Dictionary:
ass clown (ás kloun) n.:
one, who, through the fault of his parents conception, is a skid mark in society's collective underwear.
EDIT: I don't think I'm down with the idea of collective underwear. Maybe selectively collective underwear.
I SAID WHY CAN'T THEY USE THE SUGAR BOWL UNIFORM !? It was simple and looked good.
Maybe because they have Sugar Bowl patches on them?
These uniforms are absolutely terrible. They need to stop putting 'Victors Valiant' on everything. It didn't work with the halo on the stadium and it doesn't work on uniforms. At this point the AD might as well sell ads on the uniforms, if we're gonna look like fools might as well get paid for it.
I don't get it. People are just so against change it's scary.
The players love them. Isn't that what's most important? They are the ones that are going to be wearing them.
It's not bad at all. The block M on the shoulders looks awesome. If I had the extra money I'd definitely buy one. In my opinion I think this is the best one so far between UTL, State, and the sugar bowl with the sugar bowl Jersey being a close second.
In my opinion we've permanently ceded a position on the "best uniforms" list. I'm not usually on the "get off my lawn" group - some change is necessary - but after 5 different uniforms last year, this is absurd.
Edit: at least we can still claim the top position on the "best helmets" list, that is until they go and mess with those.
Frankly I'm relieved. After today's assorted shenanigans I was worried they'd look something like these.....
Those are Penn State's.
Am I the only one who hates "MICHIGAN" on the back, above the numbers? I think it looks juvenile and tacky as hell...no thanks
I assumed/hoped that the MICHIGAN on the back was a placeholder for the names. If not, I'll be a little dissapointed. But I don't think it looks bad at all.
From the article, I don't think that will actually be on the uniform. It appears to be a placeholder.
Maybe make that huge maize stripe blue and put three maize stripes and i would take it for the road jersey.
Is this torture Michigan day?
I thought PSU was being punished, not us.
Do. Not. Want....
I'd be willing to bet that will be last names. They're just using MICHIGAN for the prototype to show what it would look like without including an actual "student-athlete" in the advertising.
That would be lame.
I like them. Am I that crazy?
Your skin is blue, so...
I like them... I'm definitely crazy. I hated the UTL and MSU stuff though.
I like it. I like it a lot!
These look like something I would see at TJ Maxx for $12.99
But on another note, I'm not excited for this game after what Fitz did.
Call me un-patriotic but I don't like the American flag on our uniforms or helmet. I like the alternates though. Would be a little better if the yellow across the shoulders was kept white.
I call you an unpatriotic but, per your request. j/k
I too, while not being anti-american, really don't like the American flag on our uniforms or helmet unless it is a very special occassion.
What would look REALLY good at the Alabama game is a win. Just saying...
Man, they don't miss a beat. MDen already has them up for preorders!
........gotta go get my credit card.
The Gloves are way cooler than last years gloves.
The yellow shoulder stripe is too much, reminds me of one of the generic uniforms you could create for NCAA football 2005.
As for the helmet paint, I am sure it wont change too much. I am sure someone along the line would put a stop to it if they wanted to change our helmet too much. I am praying it wont be a Matte color since they want it to stand out more. Maybe it is going to have little sparkles in it that makes light pop off of it more, or its a stronger paint because of the wear and tear we put on the helmets last year.
I can't wait to see the UMASS Mars game jerseys
The receiver gloves will be on sale at MDen tomorrow morning as well per MDen facebook.
I just want the nike home and away uniforms worn circa 1997. Plain and simple and traditional.
The home uniforms that year were traditional, but the away ones were kind of garish. I didn't like the outlined numbers and two-toned neckline.
To me the best looking uniforms were always the clean look. The white out unis that Texas, Oregon, State, and other schools have always looked great to me. Keep it simple. Our football will be the best looking thing on the field anyways...
Oregon is your go-to "keep it simple" school?
The mid '80s away unis were the best.
I just want the nike home and away uniforms worn circa 1997. Plain and simple and traditional.
and the players seem to not want plain and simple and traditional
Remember last year when the UTL unis were revealed...massive freak out ensued and then the game happened and the jerseys, IMO, turned out great. While I was meh on the UTL jersey I did like the way they looked during the game. These new ones, however, are even more MEH for me, but will ultimately hold off my final opinion when I see them on the field.
The UTL Uni's benefited from the good feeling about the game. Had we lost 27-7, they would be in the same mark-down rack as the MSU bumblebees.
These will be a hit with the players, and personally, I do not mind the look. It's not horrible. Just don't fuck with the helmets.
I absolutely love the look.
And age. The recruits love them, the players love them, the fans only have to look at them. I like them, it's better then the stripes and it's one game. I can't wait to see them live and on the players. You might not like them now, but with a pair of dreads down the back on a 50 yard TD run I bet none of you will care.
Thankfully no other weird uni's after that and no more helmet numbers. The maize does look more original
Also i dont mind the look. Solid colors are a great choice. Now gimme my nike back
With this, not sure why so many get so pissed about the f'ing uniforms. It's about the kids and they obviously like it...who gives a shit what us slouches on the couch say? Just don't fuck with the wings, and put a great team on the field.
I like it, Ide be happy if these were our road jerseys for the season.
I also love the dicotomy on this page, its really quite laughable.
camp 1: thats pretty cool, i like that, lets see what it looks like come game time!
camp 2: OMFG THIS IS THE WORST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD WHICH ESPN PROVED A YEAR AGO WAS YOUNGER THAN JO PATERNO SO ITS EVEN WORSE THAN JOPA AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH TAR AND FEATHER DAVE BRANDON
hmmm, this seems a fair assessment of the difference between good fans, and rude, obnoxous, fair weather fans (read osu fans).
p.s. calm the fuck down.
I opened the link and I involuntarily groaned aloud immediately. Those are not particularly attractive jerseys. I just hope their "paint modifications" on the helmet don't involve glitter of metallic wings.
"Frank Beckman, along with Jim Brandstatter, back here at JerryWorld Stadium where the Wolverines have a 10-point lead on Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide going into the start of the 3rd quarter. And, Jim, how about those new uniforms the team has changed into for this half?!
"Frank, it looks like they're going with the Tubby's Famous jerseys, sponsored by Tubby's Grilled Submarines. You know, Frank, these new uniforms have a new color, Mustard Yellow, just for the occasion. I spoke to Dave Brandon, Michigan's Athletic Director, before the game, and he said that Mustard Yellow was actually a 'throw back' color to the pants worn by the '72 and '73 teams. You know how big on tradition Dave Brandon is...."
Life could be worse.
What we really want is to bitch about recruiting, but we can't.
that I think they don't look good (they're okay, and I don't think our away jersies have ever been anything awesome) but jesustapdancingchrist how many uniforms do we need in a thirteen game span?
1 stripe across shoulders and block m. aparently the ugliest thing half of mgoblogers have ever seen.
I want Nike back, thats all I'll say on the matter.
Ugh... really, really do not like it. Specifically the bar across the top. Makes it look like it's from Meijer.
They aren't nearly as bad as the 'away' Jersiesin the State game last year. Those were the worst I've ever seen.
The worst part about those was the font of the numbers that looked like middle-schoolers drew them on.
...crappy uniformz almost as quickly as he cranked out crappy pizzas.
I guess since we are playing indoors, we decided to look like an Arena League team.
Not as bad as UTL or MSU last year, but they definitely give off the vibe of a cheap Asian knockoff on ebay (especially with MICHIGAN on the back right now instead of a player's name). Or something you could buy at a random truck stop.
I'm just curious what the odds are that the promise of no further changes for the rest of the year actually sticks. Or does it not apply to games played on days ending in Y or postseason contests?
So some anonymous wuss downvotes me for saying it looks like it's from Meijer, but to say it's from a random truck stop is ok. This board BAFFLES me.
I feel sort of like somebody just told me that a couple of our starters got arrested over the weekend.
Really; one look at that makes me think it was the winner of the Tappan Elementary "design a uniform" contest. "Hockey jersey" is what comes to mind. It actually looks more like a hockey jersey, than Michigan's hockey jerseys.
I'd like very much to suggest that we go to Dallas with these uniforms:
May be for the best if nobody knows it's Michigan.
the first time i agree with you.
The best thing we can do for our brand is to constantly change our image
Translation = the best way Michigan can make money off the brand is to constantly change its image. I'm not against Michigan making money, of course, I just don't think it needs to be done at the expense of tradition.
We don't need to change our image when everyone already knows who we are. Win football games. Nothing else is needed.
The fans we currently have will take whatever we give them so we might as well break out every crazy gimmick possible to bring new wallets to the table, because at the end of the day the people who are currently spending money are going to keep right on doing it.
It's this combative attitude with the people who have and will continue to butter the bread at a place with no shortage of current customers that many find so irritating about our current athletic director's approach to these kinds of things.
Being ok with one terrible jersey is just the start of being ok with two terrible jerseys and then suddenly we have RAWK music in the Big House, altered Wings on the helmets, and hash tags on the field during the Spring Game.
It was a joke. Poorly written, I guess.
Come on those jerseys are bad ass, don't get me wrong I want the standard road jersey to go back to the all or mostly white. But those look good and the gloves are sweet I want them.
"LOOK AT THIS DUMB NIKE YELLOW NOVELTY JERSEY. IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT!?!?!?!?! SURELY THIS IS WHAT NIKE WILL GIVE YOU!!!!!"
guy when you need him? He's right in one aspect, we don't know how bad it could get with Nike. But what we do know is that it could not possibly get worse than this crap.
You my friend are spot on.
I get that people like us buy these jerseys and if they sell DB will continue producing new uniforms..but do you buy into the "alternate" jerseys help sell recruits?..because I for one am fine with the standard away jerseys..but that is just my opinion...but I saw TomVH retweet some recruits saying they loved these..so maybe they do help a little..who knows?
Commits are probably not going to go on Twitter and say they think they are ugly. They would also be just as positive about the standard road uniforms if for some reason they were in the news.
As for whether or not it lands recruits, I sincerely doubt it. USC has the #1 class in the country and they have never used a gimmicky uniform. Alabama hasn't either as far as I can remember and they've done just fine. Same for Texas, Oklahoma (I think) and probably a few others. Also, since now just about everybody has/will do it at some point, you aren't really standing out from the crowd by doing it. If these make a difference, they make the same difference for the countless other schools that are doing the same shit.
Michigan can either market itself as Michigan or as some hip new thing that can change all the time. Dave Brandon seems to think the latter move is more effective. I think that if you have 132 years of Michigan tradition, trying to reinvent yourself constantly or acting like everybody else is pretty fucking dumb.
Kill it with fire. Why can we never be in the national spotlight with normal unis. Ugh get off my lawn
The maize reminds me of those bad sparty jerseys with the black top (not as bad obviously) In my opinion I dont like any of these jerseys, and you know alabama will have a classic look, we should too, two traditional teams, it would be like the Tom Brady Orange Bowl game
But like seriously, why do we gotta reinvent the wheel...
Those are the best jerseys ever!!!
"Michigan will be utilizing a new paint technology on the maize wings on the helmet in order to better highlight the most recognizable helmet in college football and create a more durable surface." - from MGoBlue
Call me particular, but I would like to know a little more about what this entails. Playing with one of the most iconic things in college football uneases me a little bit and I would like to find out more about how they might look. As for the for the uniforms, like others, I do like the numbers without the outline, but I am not very fond of the maize stripe or the gloves. I suppose I could live with the block "M" on the shoulders if the jersy were all white, but it seems a bit busy to me in this photo.
I am going to guess they are just using a different maize paint on the helmet due to how bad they chipped last year. As long as it isn't matte I'm okay with it.
If they were to change the helmet, they would certainly meet some sort of resistance. And in Dave Brandon's world, they helmet already has three stripes!
And maize pants?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
Hey guys, just got back from a 3 day weekend up north. Did I miss anything today?
Seriously though, why can't two teams with some of the most iconic uniforms in college football actually take the field to play each other in fucking said uniforms?! Better yet, both teams should wear their home uni's. The NCAA allows it if both teams agree and I think it would look really good for this game.
We have a winner.
How awesome would it be to see Michigan in our classic Blues against Alabama and their classic Reds?
given the fact that the whole basis of the game is not a home-and-home, but rather is a one-off on a neutral field site, in Dallas. There could not be a better circumstance for a double-home-uni game. Especially since the colors are different, both pants and jerseys.
Getting the NCAA to agree to that petition ought to have been a piece of cake, compared to waiving a real, clear, inflexible rule like the requirement of numbers of a certain size on the front of jerseys.
I would definitely give them to this comment. This is Michigan. We don't need gimmicky jerseys. We have the most iconic helmet in all of sports. Stop the madness.
I like them.
That looks like shit
fuck it, i like em.
so much i might even buy one
i bet the paint is closer to that flat or matte finish paint that's come on the last 2-3 years. i like that too.
I like it. I have no clue why everyone is having a fit over the jerseys.
Two thumbs up! Best away uniform ever in my 45 years of Meeechigan football.
At least the numbers are off the helmets
I don't understand how people can clamor for sticking with tradition in one breath and then bitch about gray face masks in the next. That's a clear contradiction.
I personally like traditional, clean cut, simple jerseys. But I'm also a 36 year old former student and briefly athlete. What does my opinion matter. Am one of 85 men on scholarship to play football at Michigan? Am I an incoming recruit? No, neither of them, so my opinion means about as much as almost everyone on this board - NOTHING!
This does help recruiting. And yes, before you come running at me with Alabama, Texas, USC, and Oklahoma - lets just be honest here - how many national titles have these teams won in the past decade, or even played for? We had 2 straight losing seasons, a few 4 and 5 loss seasons, and honestly, no one cares about tradition of the program anymore. If they did, Notre Dame wouldn't still be trying to wake up the echos for the better part of two decades now. Furthermore, USC and Texas are the flagship programs in two of the most fertile recruiting states. Michigan, if you haven't noticed, isn't a hotbed for tons of top prospects.
Even classic programs like Ohio State have done the alternate jersey thing (and at a much worse level), and they've played for 3 national championships in the last ten years (cheaters or not).
Finally, I think Brian went through and detailed last year the history of the white road jersey - and it has been constantly under some sort of change. Maybe not every year, but at least once a decade, if not more. So it's not like they are messing with the home jersey which has pretty much remained the same since at least Ol' Number 98 was bringing Buckeye fans to their feet in the Horseshoe.
My thoughts from an elder Wolverine.
"And yes, before you come running at me with Alabama, Texas, USC, and Oklahoma - lets just be honest here - how many national titles have these teams won in the past decade, or even played for?"
Are you being serious?
maize home jerseys are inevitable #theprocess
I probably would normally be OK with something like this - as it is at least not the atrocity that we wore in EL last year. But today? Do these really have to come out today? Fergodsakes. Even if these were debuted tomorrow I feel like I would react more comfortably. Why must we rub it in today?
and minus 1 million to all of the idot shoe company marketers who come up with this crap. They say bad things come in 3's and I guess this was it. Just a rerrible terrible day for Michigan football, but I guess we can be gald we are NOT Penn State.
Yep, those idot shoe company marketers. Such morans. :p
Better than the clown suits we wore last year. At least all those damn stripes are gone.
We're gonna kick sum Bama ass
This has been a bad day.
It's better than the bumblebee outfit, but yes im sick of all the jerseys. I dont want to be oregon.
We definitely won't be Oregon. We're only wearing these jerseys for 1 game, and honestly, the 1 game off-jerseys are huge hits with more casual fans and especially recruits, so I think it's a sacrifice we should be willing to make. Just my opinion, but I don't think we'll ever see the day when we wear 12 different uniforms a la Oregon.
Just not sure if they're being punished or rewarded.
Not great, not terrible. Worse news has happened today.
Why don't they just make 100 different designs, and give every player a custom jersey for the Bama game?
The real marketing is releasing the day when two of your players have run ins with the law. DB is a genius
Look like anyone who expresses an opinion that is not the same as Brian on this blog gets neg bombed from the MGoSheep. Way to have an open mind guys. Leaders and Best.
Plus it wasn't all DB and Adidas. If you read the article, the seniors helped design this uniform. I like the traditional jerseys too buy its fun to switch it up from time to time. No matter what the jersey looked like, many of you would have disliked them simply because it was another new design. There is nothing wrong with a little change up from time to time IMO, however maybe we are doing it a bit too frequently lately. I still kind of like these.
I think it's slightly funny but mostly sad that half the fanbase croaks when we change the uniform for a game.
We are tradition, but you can't always rest on that. Sometimes (read: always) you've got to adapt to the future a bit.
Adapting to the future is trying out passing the football, or using Dual-Threat QB's. Uniformz is not part of "the future" in Football
until after the game. I wonder if we would feel less ill toward the bumblebee if it came with a big W over Sparty. I expect I will order one of these if I have a win in Dallas that it reminds me of.
The maize seems to be more true to the old school maize. Obviously, I have never liked your uniforms, but this is definitely worse than your standard road kit. The maize stripe is the main culprit. Honestly, though, the main reason I'm posting is because I'm shocked at how many different jerseys you guys have worn in the past year. The once a year alternate is not a bad change up, but you guys have had 5-6 now, right? Dave Brandon is releasing uniforms the way he would've released pizza promos.
Cowboy Classic TechFit Uni LIVE!! say what you will, i'm pumped...
i love the new gloves but the jerseys are stupid. i dont know why we would stray away from the tradition.
It's a slippery slope....and this is where it's headed.
