Another Denard Robinson B1G Media Days Interview
GBW has posted this (non-paywalled) transcript of a roundtable interview with Denard Robinson at the Big Ten Media Days.
Lots of the same type of questions you've been seeing, but it's worth a read.
Question: What has Coach Borges said about the process of when a play is developing you should decide when to take off and when to run; what is his philosophy about that?
Denard Robinson: “Do not force it. Don’t force it across the middle, don’t force anything. If a man is not open just take off.”
Question: Is there a lot of room for you to improvise in this offense?
Denard Robinson: “Oh yeah. It is basically a broken play. If a broken play happens, you got to take off that’s probably one of the hardest plays to defend is a broken play.”Question: Will there be more of a variety of throws that you’ll make in this offense as opposed to last year?
Denard Robinson: “Yeah. We did a lot of routes last year. We’ll have some different routes from last year.”
Question: Coach Borges said he was going to keep some of the spread elements in this offense. How much have they kept? Is it enough that it is going to give you some room to run at times and keep the ball as well?
Denard Robinson: “Oh yeah. It is a lot. It is a good deal.”
Question: Being under center rollouts and bootlegs are things and stuff like that are things they can do, run/pass type option make defenses kind of afraid of you out there on the edge?
Denard Robinson: “We was just talking about that. We might do it. We might not. It really doesn’t matter.”Question: How do you think you’ve gotten better with passing this summer?
Denard Robinson: “Being patient and not rushing.”
Question: Did Coach Borges show you film from San Diego State or anything like that to show you what they did and what they expect of you?
Denard Robinson: “Oh yeah.”
Question: Is that when you watch film primarily is that it? You obviously do not watch film from last year, do you? What other films do you look at?
Denard Robinson: “He showed me some film when he was at Auburn. He showed us some film from San Diego State. He shows us that and tells us what we should do and shouldn’t do.”
Question: How much are you in there watching film?
Denard Robinson: “A lot.”
A spring game -- the spread isn't gone for good.
I hope they hide some packages till the MSU game!
As long as we win every game, that's ok. But we'll probably have to pull out everything to beat ND
I doubt it takes the kitchen sink to beat them though.
I think its going to take the kitchen sink, the bathroom sink, the laundry room sink, and perhaps even a sink hole forming in their 2nd half endzone to beat them.
I hope we pull everything out against ND. We win that game, and then the next 4, we'll have a lot of momentum rolling into that MSU game. Hopefully this year we can keep that momentum rolling through that game too.
Question: Being under center rollouts and bootlegs are things and stuff like that are things they can do, run/pass type option make defenses kind of afraid of you out there on the edge?
....very
the question meant..."You have now switched to taking snaps from under center. This gives you more possibility of bootlegs and rolling out than when you were running the spread in shotgun. Because you have the ability to run or pass, do you think defenses will be afraid of you when you are out of the pocket?"
I have shortened this to, "U run faster than them and u can throw ball faster than they run. That make u best?"
But I'm not sure why the questioner would ask if defenses are afraid of him on the edge in the new offense, seeing as no defense has faced him yet in the new offense.
I think he's probably acts like he did in that interview when someone asked him if it was true two of his teammates beat him in a footrace and then he responded with "the look."
They asked if Taylor Martinez could beat him in a footrace.
Is there a video of this anywhere?
Question: Is there a lot of room for you to improvise in this offense?
Denard Robinson: “Oh yeah. It is basically a broken play. If a broken play happens, you got to take off that’s probably one of the hardest plays to defend is a broken play.”
Exactly. I've said that since Vince Young beat us and USC in consecutive years. I'm convinced it was a called "broken play" where he would drop back, let the receivers drag the defense down the field, and then find a lane and take off. It can be virtually unstoppable with a guy like Denard. Of course, you don't want to go there all day, but when you need it, it's there most of the time.
That was my go to play in Madden '02. Just but the RB in as QB, call a hail mary, run for 40 yds. And we all know that if it works in Madden, it works in real life!
the first play from the Spring Game? Where Denard runs over 40 yards under "touch rules" tackling?
And on that play, RVB comes free and Denard has to juke him before hitting the open lane.
and does.
It's interesting what everyone is focusing on as their "worries" for the season. I'm worried about LB's and DB's. I'm not worried about the OL and DL. And I'm definitely not worried about Denard.
Denard is the kind of talent that makes OC's look like geniuses.
It sounds a bit like that Michael Vick guy.

I love Denard's answer when he was challenged about the change to the offense.
Q. Do you think that one system fits you better? A. Can't really say yet. Q. The numbers looked pretty good last year. A. Yeah, but wait until you see the numbers this year.
Mike Martin's comments about how this senior class approached the transition are quite interesting. They clearly wanted to set the tone when it came to sticking with the program despite the coaching change.
