Another 2016 QB offered

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Harbaugh wants to take two QBs per class every year.

He offered another 2016 QB today.

Newest #Michigan offerree Victor Viramontes said Harbaugh saw him throw and reminded him of Colin Kap http://t.co/Cajhc8e0x4 @TremendousUM

Victor Viramontes is a 3 star dual threat QB from Norco, California.

He has offers from Nebraska, Wisconsin and Washington State with him favoring the latter two prior to Michigan's offer according to his 247sports profile.

The offer that kind of interests me is Georgia Tech because of their triple option offense.

to get out of blown situations , ie covered recievers, defensive pressures. When you have all day in the backfield ( like the first few clips ) it is hard to judge him. But the quick timing plays and ability to get out of pressure is something we have not seen in awile ( Denard are you listening ? )

Wow, just as I complained a few threads down about a possible transfer, saying we didn't need any more QBs for 2016. Have to trust in Harbaugh here, because I think 6 scholarship QBs are enough.

I complained for years about Hoke's handling of QBs - as did others - and I'm totally fine with taking a shit-load of QBs.  It's far and away the most important position in football.  QBs make or break teams like no other position, and that alone makes it worth carrying a disproportionate number of them so that you have more shots at getting good ones.  On top of that, back-up QBs tend to transfer out (see Harbaugh's years at Stanford), so the roster imbalance thing could work itself out.

My biggest worry actually would be about scaring away top QB recruits with a deep depth chart, but the really good ones probably aren't too worried about that.

I don't think one strategy is necessarily better than the other, they're just different. The fact of the matter is that lots of programs take one QB a year and it works out just fine for them, and they aren't forced to have 6 scholarship guys on the sideline without a place to play.

Obviously, if you only take one a year, it can come back and bite you sometimes because you have fewer bullets in the chamber, and maybe more importantly, fewer experienced bullets in the chamber. But if you can develop QBs then you can have a 50% hit rate and never have to start an underclassman and use 3-4 scholarships at other positions.

On the flip side, you can recruit 7 QBs, at which point you have plenty of experienced guys and one should step up. But sometimes it's harder to get the top flight guys in those situations, sometimes you have to move QBs to other positions which has it's own positives and negatives.

So in my opinion, one isn't necessarily better than the other, they are simply different philosophies. Sometimes you get burned living by one philosophy, and sometimes you get burned (less obvious, but just as true) living by the other philosophy. I do still think Hoke and Co should have taken a 2nd QB at some time to make up for the skipped year, but that's a bit beside the point.

The problem with Hoke "taking one QB a year" was that he didn't take one QB in 2012. Instead, he basically anointed Shane Morris as the heir apparent to the job when Morris committed so early. Not only did it take a bullet out of the chamber, but it also decreased the amount of competition for Morris, who appears to need competition to be at his best.

If we lose peters because of this I will be really bummed. He was great at elite 11 by all accounts.

If we lose ANY player because we recruited someone at his position in the same class, I say good riddance. Harbaugh is TRYING bring an atmosphere of competition at all positions. If someone quits because they are afraid of competition then they have no business playing for Jim Harbaugh.

I'm not entirely sure that good riddance is something to say about a talented player who leaves because he felt he was promised something that turned out to not be true, especially when that player is arguably the top QB in the Midwest.  You can say good riddance all you want, but I think there are some tradeoffs that need to be acknowledged.

I'm sure all they where promised was a shot a playing QB, a shot at a Michigan degree and the opportunity to work with our coaching staff. I mean they did bring in 3 quarterbacks ( 4 if you count Peters) in 6 months. The staff literally doubled our ammount of scholarship QB's in half a year. Doesn't seem to me that they'll be any promises or entitlement on a Harbaugh coached football team.

Tim Sullivan had this insightful tidbit on the Rivals board (and I'll paraphrase):

"If Viramontes wasn't quite as good as he is and didn't have several BCS offers, he would be a good preferred walk-on."

Bonus points if you follow him on Twitter and use your inside information to strike up a meaningful conversation where you tell him how great Michigan is and how he would be great here, and then maybe how great he and Peters would look together with their long, flowing locks...

But looking at his Jr Highlight film, yes please...Keeping in mind those are highlights, but I like his "pass first, run second" mentality.  He maybe lacks a little arm strength, but makes up for it with good decision making and his accuracy seems pretty good.  Obviously there's going to be some technique stuff to work on, but I think we have a coach that could help with that.  He looks very tough and isn't affraid to run guys over, but may need to knock that off at the next level.  Seems to have a little Tebow in him.

I don't see arm strength as an issue. He seems to do just fine in that area; in fact, I would probably call that a strength of his game. I've heard through a couple different avenues that he always throws the ball as hard as he can, which can be fine (Chad Henne) or not (Shane Morris). Maxpreps says he completed 54% of his passes for 18 touchdowns and 2 picks, which indicates pretty good decision making.

As an athlete, I like him better than Peters because I think he can translate to multiple positions if QB doesn't work out. But as a QB, I still like Peters more.

My guess is that this is all for naught. I think Viramontes can go somewhere and be The Man, at least in the 2016 recruiting class.

Well Peters has some decent athleticism but we really don't have any true dual threat QBs. I think he could be a valuable addition to the QB competition. Plus, Harbaugh!

That youtube video doesn't seem like it's sped up either, crappy framerate yes, sped up no.

As an aside Georgia Tech triple option is incredibly fun to watch. Check out the bowl game on YouTube from January. Very innovative stuff.
