Anonymous MgoBlog Poll

Submitted by Blueblood2991 on

With the end of OT season winding down, I wanted to get a quality shitpost in. My question for the board is which team would you rather beat this year.

While I absolutely hate Ohio State, I have only witnessed one victory against MSU in person, in 2012, and it was an atrocity of a game. I know there are MgoUsers a lot younger than me that don't even remember watching the good ole games (Braylonfest) on TV.  It's one thing to lose to more talented recruits at OSU, but it's another to lose to Michigan State.

If you had to choose, which one?

Poll in the first comment below.

\Spoiler alert: (We will beat both of them this year)

piles of garbage on the planet so for this one year I gotta go with msu. Back when we were beating them the majority of the time it was real easy to have osu be The One Win we had to have every year. The past 10 years has really changed my outlook. The Gap of Hatred between osu, msu and nd has narrowed considerably ever since UM took to punching itself in its own fucking dong since 2008.

Exactly this, thank you.  That and of course, if you're in Michigan you're always in closer proximity to more MSU fans and have to deal with their shitty, smug attitude now that they've had a good 7 year run on us with RR & Hoke.

While losing to OSU again would be brual, another loss to MSU would be devastating at this point.

With the way you worded the question, OSU.

Beating OSU would make me way happier because it would more significantly declare that Michigan is back; OSU is way more of an elite program than MSU.

HOWEVER, losing to MSU this year would be way more painful. So if you asked me which win mattered more to me this year, I'd say MSU.

Wording is everything y'all

I probably should feel otherwise, but NO matter when, if I get only one victory it is ALWAYS the buckeyes for me.

Sparty may be a PIA right now but will be owned again in very near future, however I always want to beat me some buckeyes. :P ( I am SO waiting for payback for 2006! Actually, would love for say 9 out of the next 12 years to have similar rankings going into The Game, with M the victors in the majority.)

Of course, I couldn't help myself and as I was chucklin';  I voted for #3. :P  (Props to whoever is the originator of that stmt. Personally, I love it.)

answer cannot be ascertained right now.  It all depends on how the teams open up conference play and how they are situated when we play them.  Divisions and the Playoff have changed the entire dynamic of the regular season.  They will remain rivalries but there is no question they are going to change based on the current landscape.  In a vacuum, my answer to this question will always be Ohio State, but in terms of who we need to beat this season, it is too early to tell.  It is my hope that we will just beat both of them for good measure.

It doesn't feel like a proper season-related poll unless Monkey Rodeo is an option somehow, but I am sure we can forgive its omission this time around.

On a semi-related note, there was someone walking around this office in a Lorenzo White jersey. Yeah, we won't speak to them today.

I don't know. I feel like if they lose to MSU (and I don't think they will) it would at least be very close, possibly even another crazy ending. Harbaugh would look merely snakebitten as opposed to outmatched like he'll look (not to me, but "national perception", et al) if OSU and Meyer boatrace them again. 2-8 against Dantonio would make for another insufferable year for those of us living in Michigan, but 0-5 against Meyer? Look, I can't emphasize enough that I know we're talking bamboo shoots up the fingernails vs electro-torture here. But if we can only have one, I think we really need the win over OSU. Beating MSU would be ending a nightmare, but beating OSU at the 'Shoe would be the true statement that Michigan is "back". I know it'll be the tougher of the two and I want them both, but if that's not an option...

EDIT: also, the wording. The OP asked which would make me happier. That's a no-brainer. True joy vs mere relief at last? Easy.

You bring out quite a few points I agree with and I'll even add another in the area of recruiting. Meyer has been on such a tear with recruiting recently, I submit we need a W asap to effectively slow that train and it's future effect. Even with it's recent run Sparty has never been in recruiting contention with us.

I really thought this was going to be an anonymous poll about the posters of Mgoblog. In this poll, I assumed Magnus would win about 25% or the "favorite poster" category, and about 30% of the "most arrogant" category. There would be funniest poster, most beneficial poster, best schtick, and a bunch of other fun categories, like B1G media days, or like your high school yearbook, you choose.

Then, at the end, there were a bunch of anonymous quotes from around the blog about other posters on the blog.

  • "I feel like Magnus knows what he's talking about, but he's a douche, so I give him shit and act like he doesn't know what he's talking about."
  • "I've tried to neg all of WD's posts the past year or but to be honest I can't figure out how to go to page two on the forum posts so I'm sure I've missed some"
  • "I'm pretty sure MGrowOld is my dad. He's alright, I guess. I just wish he'd get out of the left hand lane when he was driving on the highway."
  • "Secretly, I'm just really tired of posting as a koala. I didn't think this whole schtick through. I just want to have a normal conversation again. Being a koala on MGoBlog has started to seep into my normal life, and I think my boss is starting to notice."

I want to believe that the Mad Hatter is just joking around with some of the things that he says, but I kind of believe that he may be a danger to himself and those close to him.  He appears to be a rampant drug user and some of his sexual references take a subtle violent turn.  His thought process seems to be deteriorating and I hope he gets the help he needs before it is too late.

Also, how do you get to the second page?

I'm not using hard drugs until we beat OSU and MSU.

Also, sex is a lot more fun when there's a little (safe, sane, and consensual) violence involved.

up in windsor and moved back to michigan in 2005... if you live in the windsor area and follow college football the majority of the people are michigan fans so i never really had to deal with asshat state fans all that much... there were a lot of ND fans (windsor is very catholic city) and they weren't even that bad...

but when i moved back to michigan, i finally got my full dose of state fans and it was a culture shock to me... then when i started working at GM in 2006 and the department i worked in was loaded with state grads it was almost that i couldn't get away from them and the DB way talking about their teams...

i already hated state more than OSU but after my first year of living back in michigan the hatred of state grew and now there is nothing more than i want to see is a curb stomping of those assholes...

I have my reasons football related and non-football related to say both, especially with certain personal events this year involving people from both schools that left me a little peeved. If you had to make me choose one over the other: By the slightest of edges Michigan State just cause they're getting more pompous as the season gets closer.

I'll accept losing to the rival that least impacts our chances of making it to Indianapolis in December.  Smart money puts that as MSU, since I don't see them getting through their schedule with just one or zero conference losses.

So, yeah, if we're hoisting the Big 10 Trophy in December, I couldn't give a damn what those cretins in East Lansing say about us.

The team I most want to beat is whomever is playing opposite us in the big ten championship game.
Between OSU and MSU I say MSU during the regular season. Talent wise it's still not close when you compare what OSU and we have. MSU and us is. I think it feels more "shameful" losing to a team that supposedly has less talent. College football has become such a public year round battle with recruiting rivalries and what not and even in our down years we have managed to recruit "better rated" players than MSU. We proclaim these little victories and proceed to get manhandled by them the majority of the last 7 years...well it's embarrassing. At least against OSU u can look at them and say...OK this may take more than a year or two to level the playing field.
Just my opinion. I hate them both tho. I really do. I just hate MSU more lately because their fans are insufferable and everywhere in Michigan.

This is obvious. It has to be Sparty.

While the overall standing of our program is measured by OSU results, that is because it is assumed we are dominating Sparty. We are expected to be the premier team in the state. We cannot be a top program until we are standing over Sparty's corpse every year. We HAVE to regain control of that rivalry. Period.

If we lose to OSU this year, its easily defensible. (Unless we lose on a dropped punt.). But with all of Sparty's losses from last years team and the holes they have at QB, DL, WR etc... if we dont win this year it really sets back the clock on the perception of us returning to prior greatness.

So obv the answer is Illinois.

Beating OSU always takes priority, for a couple reasons.  First, well its OSU and they are almost always better/higher ranked than MSU.  Plus, they are just bad people and obnoxiously smug.  Second, OSU is always the last game of the year, and thus more important to end of year rankings.  We have more opportunity to recover in the rankings from an earlier season loss to MSU.

If we lose to Sparty but beat OSU, we'll likely be B1G Champions and play in the CFP.  Nobody will remember the Sparty loss by then.

But not the other way around.

So much more to gain by beating OSU.

It's ohio state for me, only because i was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio roughly 40 miles west of columbus. I have been a MICHIGAN fan every since i was little and caught alot of flack through the years. So i am really looking forward to beating them and watching them take a big bite of humble pie.

OSU for lots of reasons but especially this season. As others have pointed out, an OSU win means we still have a better chance of winning the East. MSU is more likely to drop two big ten games than OSU. That could of course turn out wrong, but that's how it looks at this moment.

Since the premise of this thread is kind of a downer, let me ask a more congeneal question.

Suppose in the Sparty game at the end of the third quarter we are up enough that the outcome is no longer in doubt, but the score isn't butt-ugly yet.  Say 24-7 Michigan, with MSU's one score coming on a defensive or special team TD.  Would you want to spend the 4th quarter running up the score, or playing back-ups and running out the clock?

This is the difference as I see it.  Running up the score is acknowledging that MSU has our attention, and we reciprocate their loathing for us.  We're agreeing that they are a significant rival for us, and we embrace the mutual hatred.  I think this would be conceding their significance.

In contrast, if we run out the clock and keep the score down, we are intentionally saying that MSU is not as important to us as Michigan is to MSU.  Sparty is just another team in the B1G, and we have no more emotion than necessary to win the game.  Sparty may hate us with their every fiber, but like Illinois (or apparently Rutgers), we don't care what they feel.

Which way would you like the rivalry to go?  Please note, the situation with OSU is NOT analogous.  The mutual hatred with a peer level program is well established; we're not conceding anything.  Also, OSU has woodshedded us enough in the recent past, and Urbs is unbeaten against us, thus he has an impression of invincibility.  We need to puncture that decisively.  If after three quarters Michigan leads OSU 24-7, I call that a good start.

saveferris

With all due respect, a 17 point lead going into the 4th Quarter is hardly a done deal worthy of putting in your back-ups, regardless of how lopsided things may have gone up to this point (see:  Braylonfest).

That said, I would hope that against MSU, Harbaugh would manage the game correctly, which in the context of your question means if the victory is sewn up, he protects his most crucial personnel from potential injury while giving his younger players valuable live game experience.  There doesn't even have to be some underlying message being sent with regards to this, it's just the correct move.  Running up the score against a team in the middle of your season, regardless who it is, is playing to your ego; it's needlessly risky and foolish.  I would hope Coach Harbaugh is smarter than this.

And regardless, neither MSU nor OSU fans are going to back off their current level of obnoxiousness.  If Michigan goes into East Lansing and easily handles MSU this year, Spartan fans will write it off as a one time anomaly.  We caught them in an odd rebuilding year, but nothing has fundamentally changed, etc.  The only way their collective psyche will be shaken is when we string some wins together or beat them when they're a strong favorite and that won't be settled in one game, certainly not this season's game.

Without question beating tOSU is always the most important and satisfying victory. More important than any bowl including Indy. MSU is not even in this conversation.

Seems like we have this same question posed every year, and the answer should always be the same: Ohio State.  I get why people hate MSU on a personal level, and being from MI I know more than my fair share of terrible Sparty fans, but OSU is our rival plain and simple.  We always want to destroy them.

I used to hate Ohio State more but at this point I think a win against MSU would be more satisfying.
