Announcers @Illinois Mike Patrick & Craig James

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on
How we lucked out to get a 3:30 game the way Illinois is playing is beyond me, but luckily it means no Pam Ward. Patrick and James are your guys. Sideline reporter Heather Cox isn't listed, but she's usually with these guys. (Via AwfulAnnouncing)

That Illinois game was scheduled way back at the start of the season. I suppose they could have pushed stuff around but I recall it being set at 3:30 perhaps even before the season began. My brother and I had marked this down as one to attend.

I didn't love Patrick back when he was included in the Theisman, Paul McGuire (underrated in his terribleness) Monday Night Football booth, and although he was the best of the crew, that's faint praise. But I agree, notwithstanding the Britney incident, he does a fine job with Craig James, who I'm a little surprised is as palatable as he is. Maybe MP's sort of like the mid-90s Michigan teams, playing to the level of who he's paired with.

Here's to hoping that the game is so boring (due to a Michigan blowout) that Mike Patrick can start talking about Britney Spears or some other tabloid fodder in the middle of the game again.

Ahhh so that's the guy who did it. I was thinking about that the other week and was ready to do some heavy Google research to find out who the culprit was. I remember watching a game and Patrick brings up Spears and the other guys reacted like, "what the fuck is wrong with you?" There, just found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pfs6LNk7Po Also, an unrelated favorite.

At least not Ward/Bentley (sounds like a really WASPy car dealership). Ward's voice is awful and Bentley is quite possibly retarded. BTW Matt Millen has been great. During the PSU/Mich game he did not come across as biased, and he really seems to know the game well. I'm not a Lions fan so I can't say that I fully comprehend any bitterness that people in MI have toward him. I hope he's found his niche as he's been a fine addition to the ESPN announcing crew.

I doesn't matter how many announcers I hear call a UM game, they all make me long for the days Keith Jackson was in the booth. I miss that guy! Everyone has taken a distant back seat to him since he left IME.

Maybe he can break down a play, but he is certainly no judge of talent. My favorite pairing is Brad Nessler and Bob Griese. They split them up this year. I like Nessler, he's smooth and brings a natural enthusiasm that keeps the game interesting. Griese is a Big 10 guy, his son played for Michigan and he calls them like he sees them. Anything is better than Ward and Bentley, except Larivee and anyone else from the BTN
