AnnArbor.com Article on Roy Roundree Recruitment

Submitted by sULLY on
I just found this article on AnnArbor.com which goes into detail about the Roy Roundtree recruitment, which eventually led to the infamous wizard-hat snake-oil salesman comment by Tiller. http://www.annarbor.com/sports/um-football/roy-roundtree-remains-at-the… Nothing new, but an interesting read nonetheless. I didn't realize that Purdue refused to recruit anyone from Trotwood in the future as a result of this. While disappointing for Tiller, his comments towards Roundtree and Trotwood seem very spiteful.

“They made it a big deal, but it’s OK now. I know where I’m at,” he said. “Coming here just changed my whole life. … Ain’t nobody bring me down just because I went to Michigan.”

Well said Roy!

I thought this soiled a good article:

"Michigan can’t truly move forward until Rodriguez beats Purdue ..."

That's the type of comment I classify with "RICHROD NEEDS X WINS TO SURVIVE!!!"  Too arbitrary ...

Highlights:

1. "“It was kind of boring to me when I took my visit there,” - on Purdue

2.“I couldn’t pass up the Big House, man,”

I've been toying with the thought of buying a #12 jersey, this article might have just convinced me.

It's ironic enough that a coach who looked like Wilford Brimley acted like a 13-year old teenage girl who was snubbed at the school dance, what with the wizard hat and snake oil crap. To also unilaterally declare you wouldn't recruit Trotwood any more because you hold their coaching staff responsible? Tiller didn't do Hope any favors with that move, but their loss is our gain.

Don, you hit it right on the nose.  How old is Tiller and Hope.  Incredible adults can act much worse than teenagers.  Do you think Purdue could use AJ Jordan.  I don't think Trotwood is crying at night about Purdue not recruiting that school anymore.  I use to respect Purdue, but that is all gone.

When Mark May called them Purdon't, I kind of realized that they have become a joke.  Only team, I hope we just run it up on.  Boiler up.

Exactly.

Is Purdue going to stop recruiting at EVERY school where recruits have changed their minds after giving an initial verbal commitment?   Or are high school coaches only slimy when it happens to PURDUE?

Good thing you're gone, Tiller, because you'd either be a huge hypocrite, or you'd have a real bear of time finding talent at the few high schools your high moral standard permit you to recruit.

Purdue's coaches have every right to be upset about a last minute switch, but they did themselves no favors by making their disappointment public. Ditto with the Reckman situation. I don't care if Hope ripped Rodriguez a new one over the phone, RR kinda deserved it, but the postgame handshake fiasco just made him look petty. His whining to the press about Zook running up the score just further cements his status as the league's biggest douchebag.

Hope has no reason at all to be pissed at RR, and RR didn't deserve any of that flak. He has made it known on many occassions that he had nothing to do with Reckman getting suspended. Do you believe Danny Hope who is just assuming RR did, or do you believe RR who is telling you he didn't? I am inclined to believe the latter.

I doubt RR lobbied the league to get Reckman suspended outside of his stupid press conference comment about the late hit, but Rodriguez should not be publicly commenting on personal fouls in other games, period. If the roles were reversed I'm sure Michigan fans would be unhappy too. I'm sure it was an innocent mistake by Rodriguez, as opposed to Hope's deliberate postgame shenanigans.

Reckman got exactly what he deserved, though.  The worst thing about this is that Hopeless used Reckman as a mere prop to pursue a personal agenda against a fellow coach.    As much as the vindicitve part of me would love to see RR take Roundtree to the postgame handshake after a victory, I am really glad that RR is as classy as he is, and won't do it.

All B10 teams consider Michigan and tOSU to be their rivals, because we're the top dogs.

Purdue also likes to talk shit about the Tiller era, yet they seem to forget after 2003 the good B10 teams figured out their spread and Purdue never finished ranked above 4th in conference.

Michigan4Life

figured out Purdue spread.  They don't have a NFL caliber QB since Drew Brees graduated.  It was Brees who made the offense dangerous.  With a good QB, any offensive system is going to work.  Like Denard Robinson, he makes the offensive system work.  With Threet/Sherdian, the offensive system sucks.

Tiller sounds like a bitter shell of a man with those kind of comments.  I kind of wonder if he feels slighted because no big program ever came along and snatched him up from Purdue, rather he hung out in the middle of nowhere and managed to get Purdue ranked but only got one Rose Bowl.  Tiller can sit down in his office and covet his Alamo, Sun and Motor City bowl wins, along with the fact he never finished a season ranked after 2003.

Really? How can Tiller and company be that  upset to lose a recruit to Michigan? Granted, it was last minute, but come on. Playing at Michigan as opposed to playing at purdue would be like winning the lottery for 10 million or winning a free ticket on a scratch off. Nothing compares to playing at the Big House and the tradition that UM possesses. I also dont understand how you can alienate a whole city, especially a city that has some good quality high school football players. Oh well, like the above poster mentioned, their loss is our gain. I hope we destroy Purdue on Saturday. GO BLUE!

tiller/hope must have thought - once a guy gives a committ no matter what he is untouchable (as long as he agrees to go to Purdue)

I agree to a point.  But for Roy he just was not a good fit for Purdue.  Sounds like he would have transferred at some point.

Coaches have to remember that even though they want to win football games they have to respect what is best for the athletes

Great attitude by Roundtree.  I agree that Purdue should have been upset, but there are better ways to handle it.  I'm sure the kids at Trotwood are broke up about no more Purdue recruiting.

As far as Hope,  introducing the player to RR and trying to pass him off as the victim is just plain stupid.  The kid threw a punch, and he's the victim?  Hope......you are hopeless.  My guess is we won't have to worry about Hope to long, he won't be there 2 more years.

Going out Saturday and destroying Purdue will put all of this to bed.  Go Blue!

Second year in a row this storyline has garnered an article for Purdue week (if there is such a thing).  I guess that's all there is to write about when you play Purdue.  Expect the same for the next two years.

You are right on: "spiteful" is the most accurate and precise word to describe Danny Hope.

Danny Hope has an overabundance of spite you could only find in the coach of a downtrodden doormat of a team.

No offense to the OP, but here is what I took from that article:

"Blah Blah Blah, trying to make the game on Saturday interesting, blah blah blah".

Real story:

Michigan 14 point favorites.

Purdue actually more dinged up than Michigan.

Roundtree looking to continue to smoke his opponents.

The only way Tiller would have any right to be mad is if he never had contact with a recruit after said player committed to another school. That never happens, so he should shut his mouth.

Does Tiller have a right to be angry? Probably, it would be frustrating to lose a great player like Roy, but making comments about it is stupid.

If MSU is little brother, does that make our "rivalry" with Purdue little cousin?

I could never have the time to find all of these articles without all of you MGoBloggers.  Thanks to all of you.

Very interesting article that helps me shed some light on this issue.  Seems like Roundtree was not all that enthused with Purdue right from the start.

Their loss is our - and Roundtree's - gain.

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.  That's a great HS program.  More guys for us, then.

He's one of my favorite players on the team. Ever since I watched the video where he and Shaw played the newlywed style game, I've loved his attitude. The team seems to be having fun with each other and the game and that is great for the program.

so you're a pretty average looking, nerdy kid at the local high school. the senior prom is coming up and you muster up the courage to ask one of the hot girls in your school to the dance. to your surprise, she says yes!
unfortunately, the week before the dance the starting QB asks her to dump you and go to the prom with him. she obliges and you declare "HUMPH! I'M NEVER DATING HOT GIRLS AGAIN"
