Quote: Demar Dorsey, a blue-chip high school player from Florida who was arrested for burglaries during his teen-age years, but never convicted of any crime. He comes to Michigan with no criminal record and deserves to be treated as such. Amen - now if only any other reporters acted that way.

I do not understand how these media types in Michigan get away with some of the stuff they say. He would have been suspended for making comments like that at a real paper.

I hope they hold a press conference so we can badger the hell out of the editor about taking chances on a kid like Birket. The ann arbor website is better than this, they dont need these "types" of reporters around there. They should hold themselves to a higher standard.

He said something dumb, and apparently out of context. Much like you and I have sent an IM without fully thinking about it and hit "post". His employer apologizes on his behalf. What else do you want, blood? Who is to say that he didn't apologize directly to Dorsey and that we'll never know about it? If he posts an apology, then it would get categorized as contrived and forced. You got an apology, leave it at that. You think the Freep will ever apologize?

I would settle for a trickle from the nose. Who wouldn't laugh if they saw this guy trip and hit the pavement face first? I'm not saying I would trip him myself, but I would stand there clapping, laughing, and pointing at the silly little man.

In other words, this quote was taken out of context, like several posters suggested yesterday, including myself. Maybe next time people around this board won't be quite so quick to get their panties in a bunch about something like this. Too many of you translate any negative word about Michigan into some sort of challenge to the university's integrity. Step back and take a breath first. Kudos to AnnArbor.com for offering an apology/explanation.

Whether or not that comment was taken out of context, that was an absolute ridiculous thing for a person calling himself a journalist to say. I'm glad A2.com offered an apology, but to say what he said about an 18 year old kid was shit. He didn't take a shot at U of M, he took a shot at Demar Dorsey.

Adult whose profession requires a high level of ethics conducts chat. Internet prankster who shows up in every chat ever held decides to make stupid remark. Adult whose profession requires a high level of ethics not only responds to internet prankster, he takes it a step further and uses it as an opportunity to ridicule the one internet prankster was taking original potshot at. Even an ounce of restraint would have prevented him from making such an inflammatory comment. Maybe TomVH's source was right...ethics in journalism really is dead. In that case, fire away Birkett we'll be sure to take everything you say into the fairest context possible.

I tend bar and what I say isn't broadcast to the masses. My job is to say what you want to hear so you will give me money. If that's how Birkett feels about whoever, that's his prerogative. Journalism is a different beast though...he has a code of ethics he has to live by when he's performing his job...therefore he has to keep his personal opinions private if he expects anyone to take him seriously as a respected journalist.

Birkett had a wonderful opportunity, when it happened, to say something about Demar's past, his lack of actual convictions and criminal record, and his entitlement to being treated fairly as a Michigan student athlete. Birkett blew the opportunity, and ends up looking like almost every other jackass in the MSM.

If you go back and look at the thread from yesterday, there were a ton of comments slamming Birkett and about three saying "This was probably taken out of context." I was one of them. I can't go back and erase the fact that many people on this board overreacted.

You're right. The point is that you (and others) don't like to be told that the mass hysteria that arises on this board sometimes is all for naught. I tell people that repeatedly, and you don't like that I do. I get it. I'm sorry, though. I apologize for pointing out that 80% of the board was wrong. Carry on with your conspiracy theories and Michigan vs. the World attitudes.
