Angelique: how well does she know UM football?

Submitted by 2014 on
Nothing mind blowing here, just an article she posted on Spring Practice today that makes me wonder about her knowledge level a bit: http://detnews.com/article/20100316/SPORTS0201/3160328/1131/sports0201/… I don't always agree with her, but she generally seems somewhat level-headed and not entirely anti-RR. Her knowledge level seems suspect after reading this article, either that, or it is significantly above my own. A couple of points she makes: -Kelvin Grady to compete for RB, fail? Or seer? I think fail. -Our OL depth seems considerably better than the way she describes it. She may be technically accurate, but barely. Overall, this seems like a pretty shoddy article. Either she a) was on a bender last night and submitted this at 3 AM b)she doesn't know nearly enough about the team she is supposed to be covering c) I'm wrong to quite wrong.

I always thought that she got her information for her articles right from reading the blogs/message boards - that's what seemed like, as she was just relaying the same information somebody else posted. IMO, all she knows is from other people's knowledge. I never thought that she knew much about football and there's nothing that she's written yet to show me otherwise.

Just to be clear, I don't see anything negative in this article. Next to Wojo, she's the most fair and balanced writer out there IMO. All I'm pointing out is she's potentially a little "under-informed" and/or what a poorly written article this was...

She is better connected with the insiders than any of the other writers in the area, so she's worth reading for that reason alone. I wouldn't say she knows much about the game. So read her stuff for what it's worth. At least you'll never find her trashing anyone in the program.

RR was on WTKA this morning, interviewed by Sam Webb. He spoke specifically about the RBs, and he mentioned Mike Cox and Fitz Toussaint as having opportunities to make their mark. No surprises there. He didn't say a single word about Kelvin Grady at RB.

Obviously it wasn’t written for people that already know most of that stuff, such as the people that come on this board all the time, but she got the idea of everything pretty much correct. Grady is getting a chance RB this year (maybe because they realized his hands weren't that good), older Grady, though not contributing much last year, is still a loss like she said (he was our FB last year and experienced). There are still questions on the O-line (check Brian’s post about the offense from a few weeks ago), and obviously defense is a question essentially all around, as she said. She even admits that Tate will be the starter coming out of spring and the more pressing question is that of the back up. I really don’t see much wrong at all with this article. Not everyone in the press is out to slaughter the integrity of the Michigan program, sometimes they are just writing summaries for those that are interested that don’t participate in the blogosphere.

Kelvin Grady to RB has been brought up several times before. Our OL has a net loss of 2 from last year at the moment because we only recruited one lineman, we lost Ortmann and Moosman, and Molk is still out for the spring game. I didn't actually read the article but from what you are pointing out it doesn't sound like she is completely off base.

1. I think the Kelvin Grady at RB thing was a cut/paste error. I notice two "and"s before his name. I agree with the notion that she probably was in a hurry. 2. She could have written about any position on the team under the theme of questions/concerns, with slot receiver being the only exception. OP and Angelique are both correct: we now have much-needed depth, but it isn't highly experienced. 3. I think she knows the team and its strengths/weaknesses. What I want to know is: does she know what a 3-technique is? I highly doubt it. ;^)

If we did this, she would probably then twist into a negative and say UM is turning to gimmicks to attract positive attention. I think the proper policy with the local media is to just wait until things actually happen and avoid all the speculation. MGOBLOG provides more insight and facts than any other source in the area.

i don't think the kelvin to RB statement is an error. it has been thrown about as a possibility and she isn't the first person to mention it.

I think the comment about Angelique that she doesn't know much about football is substantially correct. Her stock in trade was access to insiders, especially in the Carr regime. Read her articles now and her information is either incorrect or stale.

Start with the QBs. There are coaches who want to go with the running spread option and there are coaches who want to go with the more pass heavy spread option. So depending on what they decide to do is which QB will get the starting nod. I think that everyone who has given the #1 slot to Tate right now could be in for a shock if RR decides he wants to go with the running spread option. Not saying it will happen, but who knows. QB is unsettled. Did you see Kelvin drop a lot of balls at slot and with the depth at slot and the thinness in the backfield, this was mentioned weeks and weeks ago that he would be making the move if for nothing else than to provide depth in spring practice. Totally correct about having the same D-coordinator for the first time in what feels like forever. She did screw up on the O-line. I believe Mark Huyge started quite a few games last year and Molk has plenty of experience. So really 3 starters back.

I don't see anything wrong with her football knowledge (though I'm a little baffled by "runner" instead of runningback), it's the writing that I have a little trouble with. Either this was lazily put together or she's a terrible writer

The Audience has to be considered too. Reading this blog every day, makes everything she wrote about old news, but to the casual, less informed fan, this is a nice piece to refresh their minds on what has taken place since signing day and to remind them that spring practice is starting. My guess is that a lot of the readership of the Detroit News isn't interested in a lot of the nitty-gritty details. I agree though, the comment about Kelvin Grady surprised me as well.

"There are coaches who want to go with the running spread option and there are coaches who want to go with the more pass heavy spread option." Who are the UM coaches that want the running spread option? Who are the UM coaches who want the pass heavy spread option? Just curious. I've never heard RR say that he wants one thing and Calvin wants another.

She doesn't spend all her time here ripping everybody a new asshole day in and out. It's obvious she lacks the credential many of us are blessed with. She just doesn't understand that all that matters is posting so you get fluff points from a big, fat circle jerk of Wolverine fans.
