Aneurysm of Leadership: Jim Harbaugh
Certainly won't be his last. This is gonna be fun.

that most of the fans on this blog seem to know the rules of football better than the damn Big Ten refs?
How can the refs not know that it's legal to hit the punter on that play?

but I sure as hell did. I'm not saying that to prove how smart I am. My point is if some armchair couch-jock like me knew the stupid rule just through watching a bunch of college football games, then why the hell didn't a Big Ten officiating crew know it? What they hell are THEY doing with THEIR time?
Maybe they should spend a year sitting at home watching college football on TV like me so they would actually know the rules.
September 13th, 2015 at 12:29 AM ^
It doesn't matter what Spielman said or what fans did or didn't know about the rule. PAID PROFESSIONALS didn't know. And that is unacceptable.
September 14th, 2015 at 9:41 AM ^
Dude, they make like $3000/game

More like stiffed professionals. I, for one, am not shocked that dedicated fans, coaches, and former players know the rules better than them. Do you want to quit your day job for this?
September 13th, 2015 at 2:04 AM ^
I didn't know the nuances of this rule, and you're probably right that many other fans didn't as well. But I suspect most of us were immediately aware that the punter was in a situation where he could run the ball. For that reason alone, it makes sense that a roughting the punter penalty was no longer appropriate.
Also, it doesn't matter what we did or didn't know. The refs are charged with this knowledge. Even absent "collusion" (which I don't think anyone alleged), compentence matters.
September 12th, 2015 at 10:54 PM ^
bin the Big Ten. Just look at the appalling lack of knowledge displayed by the replay officials over the years for an example of that. I think my mom knows more about football than some of the Big Ten replay officials.

This quickly helped me get over the terrible call. Can't wait for Harbaughs season highlight reel.
September 12th, 2015 at 5:00 PM ^
Yes. It's like we have a coach who finally tells the ref what we are yelling at our televisions. It's soothing, or whatever that word is that Ace used in the post game.

If Ace is reading this, clearly the Harbaugh kick motion angry scene will win the GIF contest.

that I'd consider getting pissed off at a bad officiating decision as an Aneurysm of Leadership considering it was directed at the refs and not the players. I'd file it under Outburst of Competitiveness.
September 12th, 2015 at 5:11 PM ^
It seemed to lead the team into playing with more energy and focus. Beilein's was also directed at the officials. I think this one qualifies for the label.
September 12th, 2015 at 5:17 PM ^
not that it didn't fire the team up a little bit, but they had already scored ten straight points and taken all the momentum before this happened.
September 12th, 2015 at 5:24 PM ^
September 12th, 2015 at 5:51 PM ^
wasn't done by Harbaugh in a calculated act of leadership, more just being pissed at a crap call. I doubt Harbaugh did this with the DIRECT intention of firing up the team. When Beilein has uncharacteristically gone after refs it was obviously with the intention of firing up the team at a key moment. Harbaugh is just ultra competitive and let the refs have it for blowing the call. It is something he does pretty often.
September 12th, 2015 at 5:52 PM ^
As a comparasion between the two sports though, officiating is much more involved in basketball and coaches need to fight for the calls on a game to game basis, in football this jesture is much more a message to the team: I'll fight like a dog for you and you do the same for me.
September 12th, 2015 at 6:35 PM ^
"See your point."
That's funny. He actually uses a completely different "point" for each time his previously-attempted point gets rebutted. I noticed it was bizarre after the first time he conjured up an entirely new reason and figured it wasn't worth discussing a changing target. He's actually just here to troll.
September 12th, 2015 at 6:57 PM ^
because at first I totally missed he was really responding to your Beilein comment but you're right he just trollin.
September 12th, 2015 at 8:37 PM ^
no troll intended, my point hasnt changed, I guess I just didn't convey it clear enough. The whole basis of this thread is just some lighthearted MGoBlog fun, nothing worth trolling over so sorry if I my posts come off that way. If you or anyone else wants to call it an aneurysm of leadership that is totally cool. Sometimes arguing a call is just arguing a call, with no intention of displaying leadership to the team or getting the players' backs. Harbaugh argues very demonstratively, not necessarliy to rile up the team, its just how intense he is.
September 12th, 2015 at 5:44 PM ^
...but a season changing one.
Don't easily suffer fools and don't give away what you have earned without a fight.
September 12th, 2015 at 5:49 PM ^
to start saying this was a season changing moment. It was one bad call in the first half of a game where Michigan already had the lead as a big favorite. A lot of football still to be played.
September 12th, 2015 at 6:50 PM ^
I saw a team timidly trying to adopt the "edge" we all want them to have but mostly being unsuccessful for a game and a half.
Then coach showed them how it's done and four plays later we were set up inside the 10 ready to "man ball" it in
Not sure I've ever seen that obvious of a momentum shift from a bad penalty.
September 12th, 2015 at 7:30 PM ^
possible that this game is a turning point, but we have to take things with a grain of salt considering Oregon State is a young and bad team. Tough games still to come, but some great signs from todays performance. Need to continue to play like this and destroy UNLV.

Aneurysm II: Beilein edition was about officiating.

In my heart there is one and only one Aneurysm of Leadership and it will never be matched.

that was a bit of a different situation though. Late second half of a conference game against the in state rival vs. 1st half of an early season non conference game against a bad team. Beilein's was much more of a "fire up the team" occasion in a crucial moment of the game/season.

When the guy at the top shows hes willing to fight tooth and nail for his guys that is the essence of leadership.
September 12th, 2015 at 6:46 PM ^
with your statement, but i don't think this situation fits with it exactly. I'm not sure I consider getting frustrated at the refs for misapplying a rule as being the essence of leadership. As much as we all love Harbaugh, people are making this moment way bigger then it really is.
September 12th, 2015 at 10:59 PM ^
I looooved Harbaugh blowing up at the officials. It was hilarious. However, I don't file it under leadership at all. Leaders must lead by example and if Harbaugh is going to routinely do that, then he's gonna have to adopt a "Do as I say, not as I do" mantra with his players.
And that's fine, he can do that and because he's such a badass and a great leader everywhere else, he'll be fine. Every coach has their occassional blowups with officials, but most excellent coaches will tell you that it is not something they are proud of and may even regret. Case in point: Beilein. You're not going to curry favors with officials if you get a reputation for constantly bitching at them.
So, occassional blow ups: fun. Blow ups everyday: ehh. Harbaugh: awesome.

He'll turn them into fighters. This team will be as tough as nails by the end of the season regardless of the final record

I was loving every moment of that - I wish we knew what he was saying too. I was telling people that it really did seem like he was fulminating rage that Bo was capable of, and it actually was comforting to know that he felt rather like I did about that call too. I can't wait to see more these myself really.
