Andrew Dakich will redshirt for a 5th year to transfer
Beilein's full quote: "We're going to try to redshirt Andrew Dakich so that he'd have a fifth year somewhere else."

That is honestly so cool. I was wondering why he wasn't going in for mop-up duty.

NOOOOOOO

So... this means...?
November 30th, 2014 at 1:36 PM ^
So where does he land? Kentucky? Duke? Arizona?

They will finish 4th in Big.

That's a fuck of a lot better than "zero game inside other than..no one". Dawson is a really good player. Not sure about the "not showing up" either.

Kansas is shooting 38% from the field, 20% from 3PT, and is only losing by 1 at the half. Kansas lost by 30 to Kentucky and was tied with Tennessee on Friday with 6 minutes left in the game. It is quite possible Kansas may not be an elite team this year or at least not yet with how young they are.

Redshirting him now so he can transfer somewhere else for a 5th year where he'd likely play.
He's gonna finish his degree up here and be here for 4.

I might be missing something, but I've never heard of this sort of thing being talked about in advance before. Obviously, Dakich isn't going to contribute meaningful time to a championship team at Michigan, but it seems that Beilein is looking out for him and giving him a chance to both be a part of the team and to transfer on exceptionally friendly terms and play at a smaller school.
This is astonishingly classy. At least, it seems that way to me.

He's a sophomore. This will only come up in a couple years down the road.

Or maybe he wanted to get a Michigan degree, which im sure is more important than just playing when he knows he is not going pro.

Where better to learn than under Beilein?
There are a number of top-notch academic schools that have decided to go non-scholarship DIII in athletics. What he'd learn about basketball, however, would be no where near what he's learning from Beilein.
November 30th, 2014 at 3:59 PM ^
Why does any kid walk on to Division I athletic programs (football or basketball) with little chance to play? Get a top notch education and access to some of the best coaching and facilities in the country. There are few D-II or D-III schools that can match that even with the promise of more playing time. And if he decides to go into coaching in the future, he will be much better served having the experience learning in a Division I program.
November 30th, 2014 at 4:56 PM ^
What's wrong with that? Maybe he did want to play, and he wanted to see if he could do it at the highest level he had a chance to. He has played basketball for the University of Michigan, will get a degree from UM, and probably have a chance to "play" somewhere else for one season. Looks like a good decision so far to me

How does this benefit us?
November 30th, 2014 at 2:53 PM ^
And it does a lot for Dakich. Seems like the right move to me.

Wouldn't it open up a scholarship?
November 30th, 2014 at 3:25 PM ^
He's not on scholarship. This only affects his eligibility.
November 30th, 2014 at 3:27 PM ^
Nope. He's a walk-on.
November 30th, 2014 at 4:04 PM ^
It benefits Michigan because there is another warm body at practice.
November 30th, 2014 at 3:24 PM ^
Good for him, but this makes the assumption that the fifth-year transfer rule will be around three years from now, and I'm not 100% sure that will be the case.
November 30th, 2014 at 3:50 PM ^
I hadn't thought about that... but unless court regulations dictate otherwise, isn't this the sort of thing they would grandfather out?
November 30th, 2014 at 3:51 PM ^
If the grad transfer rule changes, he could stay here as a fifth-year player.
November 30th, 2014 at 7:42 PM ^
...but he wouldn't be on scholarship. I think the idea is to get him a scholarship for a year and allow him to be a key contributor after 4 years at Michigan and a degree.
November 30th, 2014 at 4:08 PM ^
Even if the rule were to change, the only change would probably affect transferring within or up to Division I programs which he is unlikely to do. I think the rule currently grants all transfers moving down a level (to D-II or D-III) immediate eligibility under the One-Time Transfer Exception.
And even if he were forced to stay at Michigan for a 5th year, I think he would rather have that year to play when he would be older and more experienced.
November 30th, 2014 at 4:06 PM ^
I also can not emphasize how classy the whole Austin Hatch handling has been. The more you see this kid battle, and it is a tough battle, and how the whole UM hoops family is becoming his real family it makes you happy for Austin and proud to be a Wolverine. I also can not express enough how nice the assistant coaches and players are - this is no accident.

He redshirts this year...he does his bench mob thing. Which isn't a big deal, because I mean he wasn't actually playing anyway.
Then we have him for 2 more years. He transfers to like a Bradley or something and gets to play and be a key contributor, possibly a starter.
November 30th, 2014 at 8:41 PM ^
Does a redshirt have to wear a suit and tie to be allowed Bench Mob performance under NCAA rules?
November 30th, 2014 at 11:49 PM ^
he just cant enter a game.
November 30th, 2014 at 7:39 PM ^
He's not the Bench Mob King for nothing, he's going to get a fantastic education, and then maybe some more playing time afterwards. Can Beilein be my life coach?
