Andrew Dakich will redshirt for a 5th year to transfer

Beilein's full quote: "We're going to try to redshirt Andrew Dakich so that he'd have a fifth year somewhere else."

This isn't the full quote. Beilein followed with another line, joking about having to potentially burn that redshirt during the Nich St game. I'm too lazy to find it but it's out there.

Kansas is shooting 38% from the field, 20% from 3PT, and is only losing by 1 at the half. Kansas lost by 30 to Kentucky and was tied with Tennessee on Friday with 6 minutes left in the game. It is quite possible Kansas may not be an elite team this year or at least not yet with how young they are.

I might be missing something, but I've never heard of this sort of thing being talked about in advance before. Obviously, Dakich isn't going to contribute meaningful time to a championship team at Michigan, but it seems that Beilein is looking out for him and giving him a chance to both be a part of the team and to transfer on exceptionally friendly terms and play at a smaller school.

This is astonishingly classy. At least, it seems that way to me.

probably more to get a free masters at a good school rather than be a 23 year old first year player in the middle of nowhere

Why does any kid walk on to Division I athletic programs (football or basketball) with little chance to play? Get a top notch education and access to some of the best coaching and facilities in the country. There are few D-II or D-III schools that can match that even with the promise of more playing time. And if he decides to go into coaching in the future, he will be much better served having the experience learning in a Division I program.

What's wrong with that? Maybe he did want to play, and he wanted to see if he could do it at the highest level he had a chance to. He has played basketball for the University of Michigan, will get a degree from UM, and probably have a chance to "play" somewhere else for one season. Looks like a good decision so far to me

Good for him, but this makes the assumption that the fifth-year transfer rule will be around three years from now, and I'm not 100% sure that will be the case.

Even if the rule were to change, the only change would probably affect transferring within or up to Division I programs which he is unlikely to do. I think the rule currently grants all transfers moving down a level (to D-II or D-III) immediate eligibility under the One-Time Transfer Exception.

And even if he were forced to stay at Michigan for a 5th year, I think he would rather have that year to play when he would be older and more experienced.

I also can not emphasize how classy the whole Austin Hatch handling has been. The more you see this kid battle, and it is a tough battle,  and how the whole UM hoops family is becoming his real family it makes you happy for Austin and proud to be a Wolverine. I also can not express enough how nice the assistant coaches and players are - this is no accident.

He redshirts this year...he does his bench mob thing. Which isn't a big deal, because I mean he wasn't actually playing anyway.

Then we have him for 2 more years. He transfers to like a Bradley or something and gets to play and be a key contributor, possibly a starter.

He's not the Bench Mob King for nothing, he's going to get a fantastic education, and then maybe some more playing time afterwards. Can Beilein be my life coach?
