What's interesting is that I don't recall the last time Toomer has had anything good to say in general about UM. It has always been my feeling that he has held some sort of resentment against UM (obviously not directed at RR, more likely Bo, Gary, or Lloyd), and this is just more of the same from Amani.

I didn't want to but I gave this post the ole pos-bang. Seriously, Who cares what Amani thinks? I'm excited about the upcoming season and the great opportunity we have to prove all of these haters wrong. Let's not start acting like Lions fans now *Edit* I am a Lions fan.

"NFL-wideout turns your brains into shit" card. Seriously -- what is it about NFL wide recievers? Is there something in the NFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement that requires them to be lobotomized within their first five years in the league? Andre Rison, Chad Ocho Cinco, Plaxico Burress, Santonio Holmes, Marvin Harrison, Brandon Marshall, Donte' Stallworth, Anquan Boldin... the list goes on and on and on of millionaire miscreants at the wide reciever position. By comparison, Braylon Edwards and Amani Toomer might be seen as a model citizins, so bad is the accustomed behavior by their colleagues. And yet with both Edwards and Toomer, we see the same I-am-diva self-absorption, from two guys who probably know next to nothing about what Rich Rodriguez is doing at Michigan. Objectively, what Braylon said and did was stoopider than Toomer's comments. Braylon rapidly backpedaled and apologized. Because what Toomer said was marginally less dumb and slightly more measured than what Braylon's Monday Night Football weirdness, maybe Toomer's apology will be likewise slower and more measured. Whatever. Memo to Amani: If Rich Rodriguez wins bunches of Big Ten championships and NEVER puts another player into the NFL, I will be thrilled beyond words.

If Amani Toomer was just some guy who went to Michigan six years ago (like a lot of MGoBlog readers), and if he had an interesting opinion backed up by the facts, I'd say fine, let's hear it. But of course all of the ordinary regular guys who graduated from Michigan six years ago aren't getting interviewed on the radio because of who they are. The only reason that Amani Toomer gets interviewed, and the only reason that people beyond his immediate circle of family and friends care, is because he is Amani Toomer, of the New York Football Giants. Formerly a star at Michigan. And the presumption is, that he is worth listening to carefully because he knows more than just about anybody else does. Really? Why? What does Toomer know about Rich Rodriguez? The other presumption is of course that if, as a former Wolverine, Toomer is willing to say something that calls into question the tenure of Rich Rodriguez, then there must REALLY be something strange and bad happening in Ann Arbor. A smart guy would know all of this, and measure his words very carefully. Amani Toomer is apparently not a smart guy.

Not sure who the clown talking was, but RR bashed his head in at Pitt a couple of times. Toomer doesn't seem to know what he is talking about. Is he talking about all the coaches like Bellichick, Parcells, Schembechler etc... Almost all coaches implement their system the second they walk in. I know Holtz is a clown now, but I respected the hell out of him as a coach. He also had R. Mirer, R. Powlus and S. Beulein running option plays. Holtz had the same philosophy his entire career...run the ball, fundamentals, tough defense. Toomer sounds like a 60yr old grump who sits on his couch and gets all his Mich info from the Freep.

I know nothing about Matt Williamson, but those were some pretty biased questions as well. It seems it would be better for him to not ask leading questions, but rather let Toomer give his own opinion...even if I disagree with it. I don't need the personal stories from the host.

Matt Williamson has been scouting football players at different levels for six years. Before joining ESPN and Scouts Inc. in 2005, he was both an NFL and college scout for the Cleveland Browns. Before that, he spent three seasons as assistant recruiting coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh and followed J.D. Brookhart from Pitt to the University of Akron, where Williamson was the director of football operations. He got his start at Metro Index Scouting Service, where he scouted high school players in the Pittsburgh area and also spent time with Duquesne University's football program. He knows something about football I guess, based on his steady employment record. However, he certainly isnt a journalist or good at interviewing someone.

Actually Williamson is normally on the show to be interviewed, not to interview others. Jeremy Green, son of former Vikings coach Dennis Green, is the shows typical host and is much better at that role than Matt Williamson. Williamson is only filling in because Jeremy is on sick leave.

I've heard questioning of skill players from a spread translating to the pro's but you don't hear about o-linemen very often. I'm sure Jason Smith from last year's draft might argue with this rationale. Was he so difficult to evaluate that we went #2 overall. It's interesting how misinformed supposed knowledgeable people can be.

He actually didn't say anything too hateful, just that the spread doesn't produce NFL players. Considering that this story is brought to us by a guy with "Lloyd was better" as his signature, I think this is a poor attempt at "stirring the pot."

I think if these comments were anywhere close to what Trent said, there would be a similar reaction. Toomer is quite a bit wiser than Trent though, and didn't take the bait from the interviewer.

At the same time, he criticizes the use of linemen in the spread offense, essentially deeming it as an offense that does NOT prepare linemen for the NFL. To him, nothing the spread O requires of a linemen is translatable on Sundays. I thought that was a rather un-wise statement.

The "wiser" statement was in reference to his interview abilities. I should have said something like, "Amani is more interview savvy than Trent". I'll agree though, Amani doesn't seem to be very knowledgeable about the spread.

I remember Amani bashing Lloyd not to long ago. Saying how he had no relationship with Carr and that he hadn't been back to Michigan since leaving. Since a vast majority of colleges are now running the spread where is the NFL going to get players? Wasn't last year's NFL offensive rookie of the year Percy Harvin?

Bennie

April 13th, 2010 at 1:59 PM ^

he did do that. I'm not about to bash Amani, because I think he is entitled to his opinion, and the fact of the matter is, he may be right, generally speaking. I was surprised by his comments, several years ago, because not too many players had negative things to say about Carr. I don't think Ty Law liked Lloyd too much, which, if I understand the story correctly, might be justified.

He is entitled to his opinion. IMO he is wrong. Michigan recruited RR and his system. If they wanted the same system, Ron English would have been the coach.

You know what, when I look at a offensive lineman in a spread offense, I can’t even evaluate him.
You are a receiver. You do not evaluate OL talent. If you did, maybe you would be a scout or a GM. But you are not. You play, er, played football.

Has he been around the program the last few years? Does he even follow the team beyond reading the paper or checking scores? None issue, let him say what he wants because when Michigan starts winning again none of this will matter.
