Alternative Method for Overturning Camp Ban - 2/3 Majority
So it turns out the NCAA membership CAN overturn the ban even with the SEC throwing a hissy-fit.
Because the ban did not get an 85% majority, the NCAA's membership has the option to rescind the rule if 2/3 agree. Harbaugh and Manuel may be working behind the scenes to make that happen.

I know English is not your first language, Harp seal thing, but at least try to spell correctly. You'll get more respect that way. And we might not melt your habitat.

To have a serious man-crush on Mike Leach. Some great quotes in that article.

Was gonna post the same thing. The Leach quote comparing this to a James Bond movie plot is just awesome.

Plus he brought the Austin Powers reference with the Dr. Evil comment.
That soooo fits. Swofford is the Mini Me to Sankey's Dr. Evil!!!

when I thought Harbaugh was a pipe dream, the two coaches I wanted were Tom Hermann and Mike Leach. I've always thought Mike Leach was one hell of a funny and smart guy.

But that would have gone over about as well as Rich Rod did.

So I take his words with a little more weight. I think he knows that this could be overturned in the courts, but doesn't want to suggest that nuclear option until the NCAA weighs in.
I'm also happy that Harbaugh has other people taking up the cause. The NCAA is pretty spineless, but I'm sure they'd like to stick it to Harbaugh based on the things he said last week. They're probably salivating for him to commit a second-tier violation right now.

To add fuel to the anti-ban campaign, Rich Rod said this in a presser yesterday:
"I don’t know how that rule passed so quickly," Rodriguez told the reporters. "I understand if we table it and look at it for a year, but to table it because a few SEC or ACC schools don’t want to have it is not fair to a lot of coaches, a lot of programs and more importantly to the student athletes. ...
A few squeaky wheels got the thing changed that quickly? I think it’s silly and disingenuous."
But his AD (Greg Byrne) said the ban passed "because it was getting taken to another level" - an obvious shot. Whatever, just fight with us to get it overturned and you can be forgiven your half-hearted attempt at a slight...

Didn't NIKE, ESPN, Under Amour and all the other companies profittting from The Opening and SPARQ combines take summer camps to another level? It's recruiting porn smack in the middle of the summer.

Arizona sports seem dedicated to the avoidance of "taking it to another level," it makes sense that their AD wants to prevent anyone else from doing it.

I never really paid attention to Mike Leach, other than notice that his Texas Tech teams scored a lot of points. But now? This guy is my second favorite coach that's still alive!! What a tirade!!! That was awesome - he doesn't pull any punches and doesn't seem to care one iota about who he pisses off! I like entertainment...

I can't believe some of the quotes he's putting out there. Just some glorious stuff. It's nice to have someone calling it like it is. Most of these guys who are against it will give their opinion without trying to make any enemies. Leach ain't got time for that.

Jim Underwood Whipping those votes!
April 19th, 2016 at 11:37 AM ^
AHarbaugh would have to get the support of 86 out of 128 programs for this to go through. The SEC and ACC seem to be uniformly opposed to overturning the ruling, and some of the Sun Belt, at least, would be as well, so its more like 86 out of 90 to 95 schools. Add in a few scattered schools like UCLA, and he would have to get everyone else. I would bet that there are enough Hugh Freezes out there to stop this.

Not so sure about the ACC. There really haven't been too many publicly available ACC opinions on the subject. The politics of the conference are such that FSU and Clemson tend to dictate its football direction. They will happily vote and act like SEC schools and they probably directed the conference to vote the way it did. Probably Miami, too. The rest of the conference would be up in the air. The anti-ban effort can almost definitely siphon off some ACC votes.
I agree it's an uphill battle, but it's highly doable.
They don't want to lose more court cases or PR battles and outside of the South and East Lansing, the majority supports the camps.

If a high school student can discover career, athletic or educational opportunities outside of their local region, there is absolutely no reason anyone should limit or suppress that opportunity.
April 19th, 2016 at 12:21 PM ^
The SEC is acting like they own the young athletes in the south. The bag men think these kids are for sale. Their whole attitude stinks.
America is founded on principles of freedom and opportunity.
Buying people is a family tradition. They aren't racist, they just respect their history.

Bert Beilema was on Fienbaum's show - shocker!! He said:
"We were going to jump in with both feet,” Bielema said. “We were sitting ready to roll. We play by the rules as they are ... It’s an opportunity to get on the soap box for a couple people who feel good about doing it."
No further explanation was quoted, and I suspect there was none. How could there be, really?
Angie's story also had some good quotes from Old Dominion's coach, who is very much in favor of camps. He is working on an appeal with the director of the NCAA Coaches Association (Todd Berry).
Unless that was just on NCAA Football 14. But he brought up a good point about having 15 days in June and July where they cannot work.
“You can only do 15 days in June and 15 days in July of camps,” he told the paper. “That’s four weeks we can be on vacation in the summer. Not to mention the 30 days we can’t recruit around Christmas.
“I am so tired of coaches complaining about quality of life when 95 percent of Americans will never touch the money or vacation time we get. Shame on us.”
You are correct ODU is now a FBS school and a member of Conference USA. Also keeping with coaches of SE VA universities, the head coach(who's name escapes me at the moment) of Norfolk State, which is a FCS school, was on local sports radio yesterday also very much in support of the camps and wants to see the ban overturned. Of course he gave all the usual pro's on the subject.
On a personal side note I am still hopeful that the Michigan-ODU camp will get the approval to be held as I was gonna fanboy it up and stalk the area in hopes of getting some pictures!
The Hampton Roads area was very good to them, helped them take over the series against UVA.
That's an underrated area for talent, football or hoops. If Harbaugh gets down there, that could be huge for us.
