All-Time Win% Update & Scenarios

Submitted by robmorren2 on

I reside in the South Bend area, so I am constantly reduced to having the "all-time" arguments with Notre Dame fans (Wins, Win%, All-Americans, Heismans, Titles, etc). Rest assured that we will retain the #1 all-time win percentage spot despite any combination of outcomes in the Outback Bowl and BCS Championship Game. However, if the worst case scenario occurs UM will only have a 1 game lead going into next season (UM Loss / ND win).

Michigan (Win) / ND (Win)

  • UM - 73.52%
  • ND - 73.43%

Michigan (Win) / ND (Loss)

  • UM - 73.52%
  • ND - 73.34%

Michigan (Loss) / ND (Loss)

  • UM - 73.44%
  • ND - 73.34%

Michigan (Loss) / ND (Win)

  • UM - 73.44% (!!!)
  • ND - 73.43% (!!!)

*Records before bowl games

UM - 903-314-36 [1253 games]

ND - 865-300-42 [1207 games]

**Calculations for All-Time Win Percentage

= (Wins+(.5*Ties)) / Games Played

The reason ND refuses to join a conference is that they don't want "the grind."   Although their schedule did look really tough on paper this year, they usually cherry-pick a schedule that guarantees a reasonably-competent team at least a 9-3 record, and a top ten-caliber team a 12-0 or 11-1 record.

Hopefully, the advent of super-conferences forces ND to join one, and have to go through the same grind that everyone else does.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt when they had Michigan & USC on their schedule. Now that they bought out the UM contract, their schedule is garbage. I hope Stanford can stay competitive to take our place.

Yah because your schedule is so tough.  Run out of directional Michigan schools so you had to go back to the AppSts and UMass's?  The BIG is awful from top to bottom.  Next year, for example, you have Central Michigan, Akron & Connecticut.  Add in Indiana, Minnesota & Iowa.  6 wins (should be).  Then you start getting harder.  PSU in year 2 of sanctions.  STAEE & Northwestern.  Then 2 meatier games in Nebraska (skinny on the meat) and tOSU.

Try not to sound like the ESS EEE SEE.

Hopefully they don't join a super-conference and we get to watch them slowly slide back into irrelevance as they get locked out of the BCS playoff. If ND isn't careful they'll find themselves turning into Yale.

I never liked the fact that ties count as half a win when calculating win percentage. It's win percentage after all, not win and half a win for ties percentage. You either win or you didn't. Ties should get you nothing. I'll step off my soapbox now and wish you all a Happy New Year!

If you ever need BlueDragon to come in to town and crack some heads I am willing to roll up into town and do your bidding for awhile. Stay tough blue. If we can survive Rodriguez era Michigan we can survive anything.

It never ends. My apartment during my college years was less than a mile from ND. Surprisingly, there is a very good amount of Michigan fans in South Bend, especially amongst younger people. I'd almost say its a 20/70/10 split (UM/ND/Other). I went out 5 or 6 nights a week in SB from the time I was 21-25. I religiously wore my M hat. I'm about 6'5" 250 and hit the weights pretty hard in college. The reason I mention that is because you would not believe the number of ND/StMarys/HolyCross students that would come up to me at the bars and ask me if I played for ND ... as I was wearing my Michigan hat. One time a student asked me if I was on the team over Xmas break when the team was in Hawaii for their bowl game. It's ridiculous how many students of those colleges shell out money & go to every game, yet still can't recognize the most obvious things about college football or Notre Dame history. I had a good time messing with them. On the positive side, I never once had an issue outside of friendly banter and "Muck Fichigan" shouts. Overall they are easy to get along with. I was also quite fond of St Marys girls, lol. Not a high percentage of lookers, but a great guy to girl ratio whenever you partied with them.

Haha, I had to set the backdrop to the story. I knew I'd catch some hell for that. In fairness, that was college and having thousands of girls around was plenty of motivation to do some curls for the girls. That along with only having 3 hours of class a day, lol. I've definitely added some bad weight since then. Damn I miss college, lol.

This post intrigued me, so I went through the entire history of season records as well and found some interesting items in the  statistics as well, especially when I started breaking it up by decade. We've only consistently won more games than ND on a per-decade basis since the 1970s, but the overall winning percentage for ND falls significant from about 1970 onwards.

Win percentage for ND from 1890-1969: 0.755

Win percentage for Michigan from 1890-1969: 0.715

So, very close in that period - we played 14 more games in that space and ND won 18 more overall.

Win percentage for ND for the period 1970-2010: 0.632

Win percentage for Michigan for the period 1970-2010: 0.715

For wins, we have 41 more in that period while only playing 2 fewer games than Notre Dame.

and the addition of the ACC, chery-picked I'm sure,  ND should take over the win pct. lead here shortly.

Once they do, ESPN and NBC and any media outlet will start to say it's the greatest statistical accomplishment in college sports history.  It's funny how some stats only mean something when certain teams or programs have the lead in them.

A tie isn't a win. Win percentage is the % of games you won vs. all games you played. ND had more ties and fewer games so if you exclude ties from the calculation the spread is bigger than you say.

Bentley shows Michigan with a record of 891-314-36 through 2010. Add 11-2 and 8-4 for 2011 and 2012 for a total of 910-320-36. It should also be noted that Bentley has not adjusted for the OSU and PSU forfeitures.

Why is your number different than Bentley's?

Did you take into account the losses that fall off our record because of the forfeits?
