All Football Recruiting Stops Sunday February 1st

Submitted by alum96 on

I asked a question if anyone had a calendar of recruiting schedules and MGo man Ken found this one on the NCAA site.  Just worth posting to everyone to get ahead of "why isn't Harbaugh in Roquan Smith's home today??" next Tuesday.  Everything is over but the faxes this Sunday at midnight.  That surprised me, I thought Monday and Tuesday would be open game.  So we will have a dearth of news and lots of rumor mongering next Mon/Tue but nothing concrete in terms of visits.

I also was unaware there is something called "dead periods" that are bracketed within "quiet periods" - in the quiet periods you can still text/direct message/call once a week TO the recruit (apparently recruit can call you as many times as they wish).  Dead period is nothing.

And if interested the next open season to go hard at the 2016s begins April 15th and ends May 30th.*   So hopefully we can lock down 5-7 quality dudes including a QB in that time frame to help recruit next fall.  Next evaluation period after that begins Sept 1 but coaches will be busy then with other pursuits.

*every Sunday in April/May is a quiet period.

The link shows the dead period is Feb 2nd through the 5th, meaning you have until 11:59:59 PM on Sunday.  "Sunday at midnight" technically means Sunday morning at 12:00:00 AM.

and if a kid does not fax his LOI in NSD, is there no contact? I thought coaches were still able to host recruits into February? Is there no in person contact or no contact at all?

Here's a nice little explanation of the various periods and what contact is or isn't allowed:

EDIT: To quickly answer your question:

The quiet period tightens things a bit more, preventing any off-campus contact or viewing. Visits to the college's campus and written or electronic communications are still permitted.

Coaches often try to have prospects visit campus unofficially during this time in the spring and early summer, so that they can become familiar with campus.

Well, here is how they put it anyway, if you're interested in the official definitions.

13.02.5 Periods of Recruiting Activities.

13.02.5.1 Contact Period. A contact period is a period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations.

13.02.5.2 Evaluation Period. An evaluation period is a period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to be involved in off-campus activities designed to assess the academic qualifications and playing ability of prospective student-athletes. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts shall be made with the prospective student-athlete during an evaluation period.

13.02.5.3 Recruiting Period—Men’s Basketball. In men’s basketball, a recruiting period is a period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations. (Adopted: 10/27/11 effective 8/1/12)

13.02.5.4 Quiet Period. A quiet period is a period of time when it is permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts only on the institution’s campus. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts or evaluations may be made during the quiet period.

13.02.5.5 Dead Period. A dead period is a period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the institution’s campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospective student-athletes to the institution’s campus. The provision of complimentary admissions to a prospective student-athlete during a dead period is prohibited, except as provided in Bylaw 13.7.2.5 for a prospective student-athlete who visits an institution as part of a group. During a dead period, a coaching staff member may not serve as a speaker at or attend a meeting or banquet at which prospective student-athletes are in attendance, except as provided in Bylaw 13.1.8.1, and may not visit a prospective student-athlete’s educational institution. It remains permissible, however, for an institutional staff member to write or telephone a prospective studentathlete during a dead period. (Revised: 1/11/94)

Note the revision date on the definition of "Dead Period". I chuckled over that - I don't think I've sent a formal, handwritten letter in nearly 15 years or more.

period for football this year.  I'd rather see Michigan lock its class in earlier rather than having to compete with the sleazy programs in college football for last minute recruits.  We usually have not fared well playing that game.
