All-Big Ten Teams, Awards Announced

Submitted by QuarterbackU on

The B1G announced their all-conference teams and award winners tonight...

For those who don't want to click on the link, Johnson is POY, Sullinger Frosh of the Year, Morris is voted 3rd Team by the coaches and media, Hardaway honorable mention all-conference, and voted to the All-Frosh team, however, Jordan Morgan was left off that list.  Discuss.

Wow, that sucks,  but next year is our year people!

My predictions next year:

Hardaway and Morris- 1st team

Morgan- Second team

Burke- Freshman all conference

Congrats to Hardaway and Morris.  Little surprised Johnson won POY, but whatever, him and Taylor were close.  Lucas as 2nd team makes sense given he was the only guy at MSU who could score, but Green as 3rd team seems like a stretch.  Still, the future is very bright for UM.

What a joke.  Lighty and Diebler get picked over Hardaway Jr?

Morgan left off the all freshman team?

How is Craft the 6th man of the year? Hasn't he started most of the year?

Fuck this list, probably made by whining ass Valenti.  All I care about is our team running the Big 10 for the next few yrs.

I haven't watched much basketball this season due to no BTN, but is there a reason Beilein shouldn't win coach of the year? Taking what everyone considered to be a bottom of the B10 team and ending up 4th in conference is pretty damn impressive.

It's not really for a lack of accomplishment on his part, but rather for what Matt Painter did without Robbie Hummel.  COY is an award that is hard to give out to just one guy.  There were four coaches in the BigTen this year that could have a reasonable case for it.

Battle and Lucas getting nods over Morris is where I have a problem.

Lots of people complaining about Lighty, but he's the premier wing defender in the conference, and a solid offensive player.

McCamey and Shurna getting recognition? Ugh.

Thompson is iffy, but not as bad as those two.

Talor Battle is a beast. I wouldn't have blinked if he was on the first team. Penn State has nobody on their team except him. He's a 6-foot guy that can drop 30 points on almost any night. He is the reason why Penn State has been a vaguely tournament-level team the past four years, and the reason they will be the worst team in the Big Ten by far for the next two years.

I would give Darius the nod over Kalin Lucas. He arguably has better stats than Lucas, and inarguably has more valuable intagibles and things that don't appear on the stat sheet.

Morris was better than Battle in every category save scoring, in which he trailed by 5 ppg...but took about 9 fewer shots a game to get there, and shot significantly better.

Battle "can score 30 a game" when he takes 28 shots.

of michigan hoops. J.B gotta work on team rebounding and interior game, which i know is a lot but i think we gotta team that can make a legit run in the coming years, maybe this year? Btw i love timmy hardaway, his game is sweet and the guys got a great personality very humble.

I personally don't really understand why anyone is upset. I think you can argue with some of the selections (player A is second team when player A should be third team, et cetera), but none of them seem egregious.

But to comment specifically on the teams with my opinion:

The first team is absolutely iron-clad perfect. Those are the five best players in the conference without a doubt in my estimation.

The second team looks pretty good, but the player I think is out of place is Lighty. Light is an above average scorer and an interestingly sized hybrid 2/3, but he only averages 4 boards and 3 assists per game. It's production I wouldn't turn down, but if we're talking similarly sized 2/3 players I'd definitely rather have Shurna, D. Green and maaaaybe Hardaway Jr.

I'm not really sure why there are six players on the third team, but its tough to choose an outlier. That being said, the biggest snub (that is to say the best player not on one of the first three teams) is Basabe, who is terrifying, tall, and just a freshman. I would rather have Basabe than Michael Thompson although that's apples to oranges, and I'd probably rather have him over Green too, although it would be awful sad not to have Green on any of the three teams considering all he does for Michigan State. Diebler definitely deserves recognition for the tear he's been as of late but I'm not sure the all-star teams are the place to do it; even with his absolutely nutso recent production he's still only averaging a hair over 12 ppg on the season.

Freshman team is hard. Hardaway, Sullinger and Basabe are the "duh" selections that I don't think you can argue with, but the last two slots are hard to fill by finding a player who stands out. Craft's hype/performance ratio is way out of whack but that has something to do with the relative dearth of minutes available with the Buckeyes. That being said though this isn't the "all-potential team."

My personal selections, ranked in rough order of how sure I am that the particular player belongs on each team:

FIRST TEAM:

J. JOHNSON, MOORE, SULLINGER, J. TAYLOR, LEUER

SECOND TEAM:

BATTLE, MBAKWE, LUCAS, BUFORD, SHURNA

THIRD TEAM:

MORRIS, D. GREEN, BASABE, MCCAMEY, BROOKS

HONORABLE MENTION:

THOMPSON, LIGHTY, HARDAWAY, M. DAVIS, DIEBLER

FRESHMAN:

SULLINGER, BASABE, HARDAWAY and I guess CRAFT and RICHMOND

I am suprised that it was as open and shut case as Painter is coach of the year. WHo would have thought UM was going to be the 4 seed in the BIG ten tourney....Thought he would have gotten some votes.
