All-1980s Michigan team now up
Like I said on my post awhile ago with the All-90s Michigan team, I just finished and published my All-80s Michigan team on EA Teambuilder. You know the drill, this team team works on either PS3 or Xbox for NCAA Football 13.
To be selected to this team, the player had to have played TWO seasons in the 1980s.
Just search my ID on the Teambuilder page on your NCAA Football 13 game: WolverineDevotee
Also add me on PSN! Next up, I will be working on an All-70s team. Be sure to check out my All-90s, All-2000s and 2006 Michigan teams if you haven't already.

needs to be on that list. And I'm glad you included Mike Mallory, a guy that wasn't even 6' tall, and maybe weighed 215, but was unique for his calm nature off the field and his tenacity on it.
He is on the list. 3rd RG on the list.
Mike was the D-end, Mark played O-line, at least when I was there (or my mind is going faster than I thought...)
Mike was a defensive lineman whereas his brother Mark was an offensive lineman.
Needs a place on the RB list.
Thomas Wilcher and Jon Vaughn over Boles?
is missing from your 1-man list of placekickers.
My favorite U of M PK, BTW.
Carl Grapentine just had to say "Kicking off for Michigan" and the crowd would chant "ALI! . . . HAJI! . . .SHEIKH!"
What followed was usually a line drive powered through the end zone.
...that was Howard King you are referring to.
You're right. Carl was just the announcer for the band back then.
If 1980 and the 1981 Rose Bowl count as part of the 1980s then John Wangler needs to be added to the QB group. If you need to drop one I imagine Zurbrugg wouldn't complain.
Earlier comment suggested adding Tony Boles. I don't disagree, but if you do the very last thing you should do is drop Leroy Hoard, who you have as the 5th RB. Not sure how the rankings are set, but Leroy was the heart and soul. He should be no lower than 3rd.
Love to see Kenny Higgins on the team.
Greg Skrepenak OT started in 88&89. I realize he became AA in 90&91, but he set a record for consecutive starts as an OT, and that streak began in the 80s. Besides, I dug the guy.
EDIT: Eddie Garret FB. He hard hard.
Starter on the All-90s team.
I would not allow a Boren on any list of Michigan men. I appreciate the career he had here, but as far as I am concerned, he renounced his ties and he has no place on this list. Petty of me? Whatever. He can take his family values and stick it.
Thanks. This is like memory lane for me, as I was a student 1983-89.
no doubt John Wangler (pre-knee injury if possible) needs to be on this list. I might even give Elvis Grbac a look since he was on the 88 and 89 teams
That's just a few names under the scholarship limit, looks like a nice roster, lol. Great to see the familiar names like Mallory, Gant, Woolfolk, and Moeller in there, too.
These lists are pretty dumb. In a ten year span, you have, probably 4 starters, tops, at any given position (and, in general, the standouts will start for 3-4 years, so that brings it down to about 3 players vieing for an 'All-1980s Michigan' position). So you're listing 4 players, out of ~4 starters.
Hurray! Pointless lists! Names!
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
a simple wrong would've done just fine, but..."
If you don't like the rosters or think someone should be added then just update it yourself when you download the roster. Edits aren't difficult. I think Wolverine Devotee did a nice job.
It's not a "list". It's an actual roster for the All-80s team I made on Teambuilder in my All-Decade series I am doing.
I don't think you know what the NCAA Football video game series is by that post. When you make All-Time or All-Decade teams, you take the best players at their positions from that time period and put them on the team.
You must have just broken up with your girlfriend, been left at home by your fishing buddies, run out of vacation time at work, or some other dastardly life circumstance. Most positions have a much higher turnover due to many reasons, including injuries, academics, transfers, etc. For instance there were probably 30 linebackers on the roster through the 80's (quick, somebody please check), so picking a few out is still, as one poster put it, a nice stroll through memory lane.
Yes, there may have been 30 linebackers, but there were probably, at most, 5 MLBs (or RTs, or any given position) that started the majority of games the seasons they played.
My point is how banal this is.
You have to put the LBs and OL at designated positions.
So kindly fuck off.
No offense but were you even alive in the 80s? Tony Boles was All-Big Ten on two Big Ten Championship teams and team MVP in 1989.
For some reason I thought I had every back covered. I tend to not focus on the later part of the decade since most of the impact players only played one season in the 80s. But it completely slipped my mind about Boles. Going to make an update now to include him.
Glad to see Vitale on the list. His widow worked with my father for a few years and she is a wonderful lady!
Solid! I remember the SI article on him when he was a HS senior. Loved that his "sleepy eyes" belied his intensity on the field.
Tripp, Messner and Kolesar are 3 of my all time favorites. grateful I got to see all of these guys play.
were very special players. Mark Messner was the only player from that era that I ever personally met, just a nice guy thru and thru that morphed into a monster when he walked out on to that Michigan turf. Kolesar was--and still is--one of the top 5 or 6 receivers I've seen in the 34 years I had my season tickets. Imagine the numbers he could have put up in a passing offense!
And Tripp Welborne? Quite possibly the best DB other than Charles Woodson to play for Michigan in the last quarter of the 20th Century. Would have been a star on Sundays if not for injury.
Great list and great memories, despite what some who may wish to present themselves as above it all may say. AC was my very first U-M hero as a kid (despite being a fellow Flint native, I was just a bit too young during the Rick Leach era). Brad Cochrane was a stud CB. Mike Hammerstein was a beast on the D-line--I used to be excited when that defense took the field. Humphries/Dixon were the first O-lineman I was a fan of. Well done, your list really brought a smile to my face.
