So, does this mean they'll turn on the rivalry again to increase human interest stories?
So, does this mean they'll turn on the rivalry again to increase human interest stories?
Rats. Good luck to him.
So much for those crystal ball predicitions on 247. Oh well, long recruiting season ahead still. Anything can happen.
Yeah, I never quite understood why they were all so optimistic about Bars heading to Michigan. I never heard / read anything saying he even had a leader. Him committing to Notre Dame is not a surprise, regardless of what 247's Crystal Ball said.
YES! You are a 1000% correct. Everything that I read about this kid seemed to point to him going his own path. I never saw anything from Sam, Spath, TVH saying this kid had more than a passing interest in us. I don't know why so many people thought he was solid. I am not really worried about OL with 10 kids in 12 & 13. We have 2 already. We have other needs.
So who's the next tackle target?
Casey Tucker has expressed a little bit of interest after decommitting from USC. Roderick Johnson has visited. Otherwise, we might need to send out some new offers.
Magnus, do you think Mike Grimm might receive an offer in the future?
I'm not a big fan of Grimm. He's a waist bender, and he doesn't have the feet to play left tackle.
And I guess including jamarco jones, who do we have a realistic or better than realistic shot at landing.
There's virtually no buzz about any of those tackles committing. Jones is probably the closest, but Michigan is probably #2 or #3 there right now, pending some visits next month.
Who do you think the next great LT is here? Has he even been recruited yet?
I know the excitement dropped a lot on LTT because of his weight or how raw he is, but there's a reason every major program in the country offered him (Alabama, FSU, OSU, ND, USC to name a few). He has the frame to get there. He needs to put in a lot of work, but his attitude and the fact that he was able to drop so much weight before coming to campus, and the fact that he enrolled early suggests he could get there.
That said, no one should sleep on Magnuson either. Between those two, I think we should be at least solid at LT for a while (and we'll be much better than that at every other OL spot).
reports on Mags have not been good. Actually, it has been pretty silent. Spath told me this kid is getting beat in practice by walkons. This could change, but as of now he is not lighting things up.
Yeah I've heard similar things, but he's still a true freshman, and small for an OL. Once he adds 20 more pounds and spends another year taking reps, he'll be a lot different. He has all the tools and the frame, he just needs to add the bulk and the technique.
I think Logan Tuley-Tillman has a lot of potential. I also think Erik Magnuson has the feet to do well as a pass blocker; he's supposedly pretty ineffective in the running game. His body needs to improve, though; he's young and I just don't think he has the physical strength to do the job right now.
Roderick Johnson would be a great pick up. He looks really good.
I heard we need one LT recruit then we are done for the year for OL.
I'm really comfortable waiting and seeing some of these recruits develop in their senior year before taking our last OL. At this phase of the recruitment cycle, Taylor Lewan was a complete nobody.
Jamarco Jones (presumed OSU lean) and Roderick Johnson are probably the next two up. After that, not much else activity right now.
Isn't Jones 6'4"? He measured that at the most recent camp he was at. That just screams gaurd to me, and we have plenty of interior OL. We need a prototypical tackle. I like Johnson and his frame, but I really have no idea where we stand with him. If we can't get someone like that, then I would also be OK waiting until they find someone they like with a 6'6" or 6'7" from and long arms. Even if it's a rawer prospect, we need tackles on the roster.
Yes, he is a guard, but Michigan hasn't stopped recruiting him despite only taking 3 OL prospects. Since they always shut positions down when they reach their target number, they must be willing to take him.
I actually totally agree with you that we need more OTs, but I think people are way too quick to slap "guard" on any guy that isn't 6'6 or bigger.
Here are some actual heights from the NFL combine:
Those are the heights of every OT drafted this year in the top 3 rounds that wasn't a top ten pick. Not what you would expect if you follow recruiting, where every 6'5 and under guy is a presumed guard...
That is their combine measurement. At the combine they measure everyone in exactly the same way and obvioulsy they don't round much. You can add 1 or 2 inches to most of those to get their listed high school and college heights. Which leads us back to the 6'5" or over mantra for a tackle.
Exactly. I bet every one of those guys was listed at 6'6" or taller as a recruit.
At Michigan the majority of tackles over the last decade have been 6'6" or taller (according to Michigan's rosters). Lewan, Schofield, Ortmann, Dorrestein, Huyge, Kolodziej, etc. I think the last 6'5" guy to play tackle was Steve Schilling, who...moved to guard. The guys in the OT pipeline are 6'6" and 6'7" players like Tuley-Tillman, Braden, and Magnuson. It's clearly a trend with Michigan's coaches, not just recruitniks.
I think it's just not very likely that shorter guys have the wingspan/length necessary for the job. Wingspan approximates height, so guys who are 6'3" are less likely to have the reach necessary; they also lose a couple inches worth of weight, so then you have to worry about their strength at the point of attack, too.
Yes, they've all been 6'6" or above according to M's roster, but as you've pointed out yourself, those are usually exaggerated by an inch or more (as evidenced by the heights our guys are measured at for the draft and so on).
So Jamarco Jones being measured at a legit 6'4" at a camp probably means he's actually as tall as the guys listed at 6'5" or 6'6" on our roster.
That said, although wingspan is usually correlated to height, it can vary a ton. It's very realistic that one guy could be two inches shorter than another, but have a wingspan that is two inches longer, or more.
So if he's a legit 6'4" and will show up on the roster as 6'5", then he's still probably unlikely to play tackle.
I also, by the way, just think he plays like a guard, regardless of height. I've said that since he came on my radar.
OK, that's another thing altogether, and certainly more important.
My point wasn't necessarily about Jones specifically, just the overall point. It seems like OL height for recruits (and college players) is similar 40 times for other guys. It seems that every OT at a major college is 6'6" or above, yet so many of the NFL guys are below that. And it's not that the NFL wants shorter guys, it's just that a lot of those guys who are 6'6" as recruits and college players are actually 6'4.5" or so, and are listed as such on their NFL rosters.
So just how we shouldn't get upset when one of our CB recruits doesn't run a 4.5 when he's timed electronically, we should react similarly when an OL recruit comes up an inch or so shorter when measured at a camp.
Who didn't see that one coming?
Get off your ass Hoke and start winning some of these recruiting battles!
Thats two ESPN 100 THIS week the all mighty crystal ball had coming to us getting away!
had him going to Michigan.
I remember reading a few articles about him the past few weeks and they noted that his family has strong ties to ND and he's the only(?) of the brothers to get an ND offer...didn't realize all the predictions were him to Michigan, to be honest.
Wish him the best. He will likely never actually play against Michigan.
All ND commits get a complementary gift card to the local Chicken Shack.
Good luck to him when they aren't playing Michigan.
Have fun playing for Brian Kelly.
Apparently Kelly got Alex to commit by telling him he can be just like Brady Hoke...
but by the time he learns that's not true, it'll be too late.
Good luck to him, mostly.
I had him to ND, just based off the fact that he's got brothers at other schools... I believe that includes Notre Dame. Also, Michigan's got a bunch of young guys on the offensive line and his brother is not currently in the mix for a starting position.
I think we get another OL, just not sure who that is. I'd love Jones from Chicago, but he's supposedly an Ohio lean.
are at MI and PSU, not ND. They weren't offered. Father was a Domer I think.
Not sure if I need the /s
Hoke can't recruit o-linemen.
Best of luck to him
wow. i guess he doesn't want to follow anyone's footsteps but his own.
that is probably more influential than his brothers'.
let's just go all out for jamarco jones and steal one from ohio
Don't want him at this point. He's a guard, and we need a prototypical tackle. Jones measured 6-4 at that camp a few weeks ago.
I must have missed that. I didn't realize he was so short. I'd take roderick johnson then
That's merely Freddy's opinion. It isn't shared by the coaching staff.
Yeah, I disagree with that as well. Not every OT is 6'6" (in fact most aren't) and he's a great OL prospect. We have a lot of guys right now who could play OT or OG, and though Jones might end up a guard, his height will not keep him from playing tackle.
People put way too much emphasis on height for these guys, especially since (like 40 times) most of them are exaggerated by an inch or two. Plus, not every 6'7" guy has longer arms than every 6'4" guy, and that's the important part anyway.
If only we could get a prototype offensive tackle. Athletic, top ranked recruit, like 6'7" tall, from a hotbed area like New Jersey, plays for one of those Catholic powerhouses, maybe named, oh I don't know, Juwann Bushell-Beatty. That would be awesome :D
Double post. I get to take a drink!
Good luck to him.
Shucks. It looks like Ace will never have a 100% score on his 24/7 predictions. It's okay. As long as Peppers commits all will be forgiven.
Westphal, Hand, McDowell, Peppers, and Williams.
Finish 2nd for Smith (ND or stays west), Scott (UF), Winovich (OSU) and Jones (OSU).
Assuming we have 4 more spots...who are the targets? OL, SLB, S would seem like the positions that we'd need to fill. Plus one "best available" type.
If you ain't first, you're last!
If anyone doesn't choose us, they're the loser...not us.
And even if they did go elsewhere, I still have us with a SICK class and 4 spots left. A couple names have surfaced at SLB, Magnus just named a couple for OL, not sure about S though.
the first loser!
Since Grant Irons.
Seriously though, good luck to him. Can't trash talk the brother of a Wolverine. He went where his heart is, and that's what it's all about.
Not too upset considering out OL hauls the last two years. Also considering we are in on numerous top recruits, i'm fine with getting developmental guys like JBB and letting them sit.
I guess he is a chicken...not a wolverine.
most of ND's commits starting next February will never play against UM unless they play as true Freshmen or they meet in a bowl game.
Bummer, but best of luck to him. I'm just glad he didn't go to one of our rivals.
You are right about this as ND is no longer a rival on the field, only in recruiting.
The Chicago Tribune had a direct quote from Alex Bars (HERE):
"I thought about it real hard for like the last month," Bars told Irish Illustrated. "Pressure started coming on and spots started filling up. I just realized that was the school for me."
The ESPN blog (HERE) has a little more too. Bars had said that he knew about a week ago, but his parents encouraged him to wait and make sure he was going where he really wanted.
Best of luck to Alex Bars.
I was hoping he'd be like his brother and go blue.
I had heard from someone close to the Doles family that after UM's latest OL commit that the coaches called Tommy and told him they no longer had a spot for him. (Shortly after talking to teh UM coaches Doles commited to NW.) So I'm guessing that any UM offers to OL will only go to tackles.
Didn't see this coming.
Atleast you guys land Peppers.
We hope so.
(Why was this post neg'd? just because he's from ND?)
Because he's a chicken
Probably didn't see Bunting coming either.
Bunting going to UM you mean? Meh, we got Weishar. Down year for TEs imo.
Poop. I was ready for Alex in maize and blue like a year ago #ihazasad
Oh well. Can't get them all. Would have been great to have, but with our O-Line haul, he won't be missed.
Can't land them all. Good luck to you sir.
but good luck to Mr. Bars nonetheless. With only one more spot to fill (presumably) we have lots of time still to find a good player. The coaches may have to fire up the printer and print off a few more offer letters, but that's what paper is for.
you had to expect him to go. The quota from the next generation had to be filled. enjoy the St. Ed's Hall dorm dance young man!
