Anyone remember when it was the Builder's Square Alamo Bowl? That game against TAMU drove me nuts. We totally got jobbed in that one. Damn the Big XII.

Alamo Bowl Open Thread
Everyone is on texas tech.
Line was tt -7.5 this morning. It close at -9.5....pretty one sided action today.
Books are pulling for Sparty. And, I wont lie, i took the bait as well, buying up a half a point. I have MSU +10.
I think they can stay within double digits. I just dont think the TT machine will be as sharp as it needs to be four four full quarters to cover as big chalk
I am surprised the line went the way it did, with all the sniping and in-fighting at TTU.
MSU has one of the worst pass defenses in the nation. MSU isn't necessarily clear of drama themselves.
They should just rematch that fraternity fight, only allowing the fraternity guys to choose five ringers from TTU.
The first annual Dant-Alamo Brawl.....
Ugh. Watching Dantonio makes me want to vomit....which was not aided by the weird shaky cam at the beginning of the broadcast
I can hardly wait to see the slanted coverage on Leach that ESPN spits out.
Also I find it interested that MSU players can beat the hell out of some kids, put some on the hospital and ESPN doesn't say a thing thing about it, but they're going to nail Leach to the wall with commentary during the game over a kid ending up in a dark shed.
i guess everything in the big10 is slow.
"MSU's big, slow punter comes out for the punt. look how slow he is walking out there. on the other hand, texas tech's punter has got some real speed to him!"
Good start. I love it. Guns Up.
Lil Bro throws an early interception.
And so it begins!
Wow Nichol at receiver. He'd be the last guy I expect them to put out there.
Hopefully we get "Nick" and not "Taylor" this game. "Nick" is such a better quarterback.
(Leach would call Potts "Nick" at practice. "Taylor" is the evil side of Potts. "Nick" is the competent passer.)
I hear tell this Texas Technical University uses the forward pass quite a bit.
.
un-American
turned it on, tried to root for the big ten and couldn't do it.
Me, too!
I didn't even try to root for the Big Ten.
State's D looks like it has no clue how to handle a spread passing offense. Look how deep the safeties are and how spread out the LBs/CBs are. I hope Richrod is taking notes.
Wow all of TTU's receivers look quite fast, and also get good blocks for being smallish looking
I'm hoping Adam James makes it on the field for one play. The crowd reaction could be priceless. He'd obviously get boo'd, but I wonder if anyone brought any tortillas to throw.
I think the Sparties would feel more comfortable in the ski-mask like hoodies that would be necessary if the game was in the cold.
7-0 Engineers.
First of many touchdowns for Texas Tech. Honestly, I don't think this game is going to be close, and by close, I mean "within 30 points." I think TT scores at least 40.
TT's offense is fun to watch. I'd like to see us move a little more in that direction if Tate is going to continue to be the starter. I don't want to see Tate averaging 10 carries a game again next season.
Good luck to MSU's D-cordinator he's going to need it. Nebraska's D couldnt even stop them.
Leach's offense is crazy! MSU better have a lot of shut down corners
I really wish I could root for the Big Ten here. I also really wish State wasn't full of criminals and didn't have a classless coach. Guns up and, uh, whatever else Texas Tech says.
I was Baron's student minister his last year in high school. GREAT kid. Very mature for his age and one of the most humble athletes I have met.
Good to see him get the first score.
how does tony drake's game compare to his? they seem somewhat similar?
personally, I don't see I true apple to apple comparison. Baron is a good 20lbs bigger and plays a more rounded game. He catches the ball a lot more out of the backfield.
Drake however has the chance to just flat out go every time he carries the ball.
Both great in their own way but Batch a little more APB.
I love to hate how the leadership of these bowl sponsors always put themselves into commercials.
violence and imprisonment for the community?
...if he would just use some of the obvious descriptions right in front of him like:
"Caper sprints around the end like he just assaulted some innocent fraternity members."
OR
"The warden, I mean Coach Dantonio, may want to challenge the call on the field"
OR peharps
"Potts drops back....and hits Batch in the left flat on a jailbreak screen...and he picks up 8. You know, Bob, you would think the Spartans could have used a play like that before the game--ha ha ha ha
Forget you guys. I'm rooting to State Baby!
Skimasks On!
Shivs Up!
umh....
Yeah I can't do it. I rooted for tOSU, that's my sin for the year. Go TTU!
So much for TT can't stop the run.
"Over the years, the Michigan State offense has been built on balanced run."
Funny, I thought it was built on balanced fail.
probably the closest the score will be tonight.
EDIT: until it became 7-7
I was going to say 0-0. Can't get much closer than that.
Announcers: James not playing due to a concussion....
No shit guys, no shit.
I've seen TT play a lot, but it still freaks me out how far apart the O-line sets up.
It would be interesting to see Brandom Graham go up against a line with those kinds of gaps. I wonder if he could beat his man before a second guy could get over...
FinallyFast.com commercials confuse the crap out of me. How does that woman get the blue screen of death on a Mac.
/off-topic-rant
iknorite.
definitely a whole lotta high caliber acting
Wow, it is like Craig James personally wrote the script for the booth guys here.
ESPN takes care of its own.
oops. Maybe TT does have a problem with stopping the run after all.
Nobody puts Spartans in the closet
So many directions to go with that sign. Where to even begin?
...Michigan has plenty of room in its jails right now.
I was going to head out not even put the game on my DVR. Might as well press record real quick...
wait till Bob Davie is done talking, then hit record.
In fact, I am waiting for that. Still...
HEY, ASSHOLE, SHUT THE FUCK UP AND TALK ABOUT THE DAMN FOOTBALL GAME.
Those splits are for passing lanes, not running lanes you dunce. Perhaps having Craig James announce this wouldn't have been much worse despite the conflict of interest.
Hey Bobby Boy is a Notre Dame product. Lets just be happy he understands the concept of 'lanes' in football and not confuse him with the subtle differences.
BIASED ANNOUNCERS ARE BIASED! Talk about a one sided blather. they make me want to puke.
they are so good at getting quick guys in space
Those little Tech receivers can block!
Indeed. It appears that the pass completion percent is also helped a lot by how good all of their hands are
"nobody runs the screen like TT." They do look good and I look forward to RR getting our system this refined.
Whoa - who was that pro-wrestler-looking guy for TT?
John Cena? Never finished his education.
No - someone in the game for them today (an OL?) has his whole face covered in what looks like eye grease.
sorry that was poor attempt at a joke. it's actually Brandon Carter. here is an old article on him...
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/big12/2008-10-29-texas-t...
Carter is a fan favorite. For their game on halloween, he came to the game in costume: no face paint.
I was glad to see him reinstated after the suspension early in the season....
wow he was wide open
...for undermining Leach. Supposedly the team didn't want Potts at quarterback and Carter was a bit too vocal about it.
Correct on all accounts. They have had serious drama with the QB position this year.
Do you know why they didn't want him to start?
He's not very consistent. As I mentioned earlier, Leach called his competent passing persona "Nick" and his bad, unable-to-read-defenses side "Taylor".
The team had no confidence with "Taylor" at the helm, especially when Sheffield was playing pretty well in his first few appearances.
I was going to take a drink every time Leach got mentioned, but damn I'd be dead by halftime.
So are they saving the MSU drama for the second half? Oh wait, America doesn't care about State.
nice timing on that end around
I don't think that was interference. Why the TT guy didn't call fair catch I have no idea.
Love the call for the flea flicker!!
we have failed little brother by allowing them to get into legal trouble. Perhaps we weren't around enough, away at football practice.
I can't believe Dantonio broke out the "no respect" card after his program just forfeited any respect it deserved with the potluck brawl.
as an "on campus brawl"?
It was a B&E + felonious assault. Get it straight, dipshits.
Touchdown Red Raiders!!
absolutely wide open on that play. guy in flat on the left was wide open too
No less than 3 guys wide open on that touchdown pass.
This is going to get ugly quickly for little brother.
All week-seriously. I would never go there for rehab now...
Mike Patrick just said doo-doo!!
Is that MSUtrue freshman RB buring a redshirt to play in this Bowl Game? That would make me ever so happy.
No, their true freshmen took over the reigns at HB pretty early in the season. They were their best options - not just because their starters weren't that good, but because Caper is actually a pretty solid back. As he gains size over the next few years, he should be good.
please give me the score ty
Texas Tech 17
MSU 7
17-7 TT
EDIT: 17-14 TT with 8 min left in half
17-13 (PAT pending) Tech up, MSU just scored.
EDIT:
It's good 17-14 Tech with ~8:06 left in the half.
I know there could be reasons why you can't watch (dial-up, out of US, etc.), but in case you're not aware... ESPN360 is how I've watched a lot of the games without cable.
http://espn.go.com/broadband/espn360/index
has some crazy looking dreads
I think if we played Texas Tech this year, the cumulative score would be somewhere near 6,000. Tech appears to have no defense.
Just wondering when they are going to get around to talking about the Leach firing. Has it been mentioned it?
But I wonder where he could have taken TT in a couple more years.
but one of them is saying "practice" in reference to TTech more than Allen Iverson
Bob Davie. Horrible.
I think he's lying about having watch Texas Tech in practice. He does not seem to have ever seen Texas Tech play before.
Can our bubble screens PLEASE look like TT's next year? Holy shit. Those are FAST!
It seems like these screens aren't any kind of read-just a set play. The QB doesn't drop back and read-he just chucks it and everyone goes to block the screen. it's just a totally different play (and boy does it work!).
So something about 103rd ranked pass defense?
Eastern Michigan represent! haha
wow that non pass interference call could have landed that guy in prison
Epic ref fail. But I'm sure the loony sparty board is saying that somehow, Dave Witvoet is the problem and you are somehow being wronged.
i wanted SO BAD for them to say that 'the wide receiver was mugged by the corner'.
Those guys look like some crazy motherfu%$#ers.
in a cave because every one of their white guys seems to have a big mountain-man beard
I would not like to meet Brandon Carter (Tech's RG) in a dark alley. Wow that is a scary looking dude.
My sister has met him a few times at random bars around Lubbock. Completely soft away from the field. On the field, way different.
He used to be a minor league pitcher? Or did I read the article your posted earlier incorrectly?
I didn't link to it, but yes:
He's the elder statesman at 26, having spent four seasons as a pitcher in the Chicago White Sox farm system before he walked on at Tech.
Huh. Apologies to whoever did post it.
I can't reconcile the image of him wearing face paint and weighing around 300 pounds with him being a pitcher.
Thanks for the info. To bad his baseball career didn't work out. It would have been interesting to see him and Ozzie Guillen on the same team...
you from the LBK? I know most people are rooting against Sparty more than rooting for Tech. All of my in-laws are Red Raiders and are just south of LBK.
I'm from Houston. I've got a sister at Tech, but I've been a fan of the Red Raiders for a while. I never had a solid college allegiance growing up. If anything, I just hated OU, LSU, and OSU (Ohio).
Did you attend UofM? What's your connection to the Maize and Blue? (If you don't mind me asking)
I was at UM for 3 years ('04-'07) before changing my major. It wasn't financially viable for me to stay for another 3 years to get my degree.
I feel like you're our rock. <3
Cool. I grew up in Spring/Woodlands area of north Houston. Had music scholarship to UM until I also switched directions and went to school out in Abilene.
Thanks for sharing and thanks for adding to the mgoblog.
Yeah, I'm from Pearland on the south side. I'm currently in Lake Charles at McNeese. Despite its MSU acronym, they also use a yellow block M on a blue background. This way I can re-use all my Michigan baseball hats.
And now I know that Bob Howry went to McNeese State. Though to be honest, I hate the guy.
Blocked
doing alright without Leach, granted this is MSU and not Texas.
I love how they can run the same swing screen every time, and it will always get them 5-10 yards.
I wish TT would put this game away so that I can go to bed.
Detron Lewis?
Your avatar and that guy look eerily similar.
I'm a sucker for blond mustaches.
pontificating about Mike Leach the entire game is OK
Just shows how insignificant MSU really is. Nobody cares on the national level.
I love that ESPN had two instances of "(expletive)" but left "ass" in the statement.
Just caught up on the rest of the 1st half. Gotta give Sparty credit for hanging tough.
.
I wonder what Mike Patrick was sorry for?
Well son of a bitch.
Is Texas Tech trying to lose this game?
on the play
Let's see how he & Mike Patrick do at that suggestion.
finally got a text message from the boss saying, "hey guys, there is a game on."
took 3 minutes to go back to the James story.
TT stealing our play where in the D makes Cousins look like McNabb.
SRSLY?
Why are they Oregoning away this game?!?!
That non-call on the pass interference really looms large now.
Did TT just fall asleep in the red zone?? Or was that the parting of the sea so the backup QB could get some ink?
Am I the only one pulling for Sparty?
They can lose, but just not by more than double digits.
Should be an interesting second half.
How much did you put on it? Is it enough to be worth 9 months of "oohhh, Dantonio-Sparty rising!!"?
Just a couple dollars
Ideally, Sparty could still cover, but blow the straight up win thanks to a Dantonio gaffe. That's win/win all around.
But, hey, if Spartina is going to overachieve, I'd rather win a buck or two.....it's a whole lot better than waking up in Ohio after a buckeye win in the Rose Bowl after having bet Oregon
Brutal
Anyway, plenty of time for Tech to still blow them out. We'll see if MSU has four quarters in them.
I know you have pull with the head guy here, but do you really want to be using the "S" word, even if only on principle?
1. The team I root for always has worse placekicking than its opponent
and
2. The team I root for will tend to commit more turnovers than its opponent, especially in the second half.
wow....just wow
What do you do when a whole Network has a conflict of interest? Wahhhhh Adam James...
Crap, they are going to piss this game away. God hates us.
Honestly, I think the commentators have been reasonably balanced in the way they've discussed the Leach episode. I don't feel like they're really slanted towards James. They're just talking about it too much.
I think it's become less blatant anti-Leach. The beginning of the game was way slanted against him. I'm wondering if there wasn't some sort of talk during half time on toning it down.
Michigan State is in town. Everybody in San Antonio needs police protection.
my apologies... I could only give you +1
next year
Wife gets the TV. Gotta finish this one up on the DVR. Have fun guys.
Sitting in a house full of Green and White.... Can we please make a bowl game next year! Either way, go big ten F%[email protected] You Ohio State
.
I don't root for criminals. I like freedom. I'm an American. I wear Wrangler.
Patrick talks up Greg Jones when it was clearly the other guy that made the play.
did they say flute player?
.
Hope he doesn't get beat up for that
You don't want to know what he used to do in band camp...
"Cant just grab both balls" "he's got no sacks"...it all sounds wrong now.
But I'm sure his girlfriend is very impressed.
"You've got to love a quarterback who can put it where he wants it"
stephens is seeing double... send him to the electrical closet
Could there have been a less meaningful play to look at during that timeout?
"You know Mark Dantonio is going to have another good recruiting class."
Oh noes, the ESPN talking heads know that Dantonio has Michigan on lockdown too. Who told them?
Are our safeties wintering in Lubbock?
I'm getting tired of the endless penalties on TT. It's about time for a patented idiotic MSU personal foul.
penalties are often a result of soft coaching. don't think Tech will be accused of that anytime soon.
That flea flicker was not nearly as wide open as Patrick claimed it was.
Maybe you could say he was open for the over-the-shoulder throw where either Gantt catches it or it goes out of bounds, but really, State was lucky that it didn't get picked off given the extremely rushed pitch catch & throw.
Sigh, called that. Saw it all the way. They still couldn't cover it. Didn't call that TD pass play though.
Texas Tech has a very, very bad defense.
Or, alternatively, this is the future for Tech fans. In which case, I feel very, very bad for them.
This is typical Tech D. McNeil has actually helped make them better but this is pretty common.
#26 for TT is not going to want to watch that fake FG play during film session. He took himself out of the play in a way that would make Jonas Mouton blush.
They just called the Michigan State program under assault over the last 5 weeks. I think, if anything, they're the ones guilty of assaulting anyone.
Yeah ironic wording there. "The program is under assault for, um, assault."
If he can be put in a position to throw a TD pass, why can't Denard?
were going to throw passes to guys that while open, weren't crazy open (i.e., some decision-making was involved), I would have bet that one of them would have been picked off.
Lucky Dantonio.
And another lucky break - his guy just plain drops the ball and it doesn't get recovered in bounds (according to the refs, at least).
That's a facemask AND a late hit.
The officiating on this game is getting out of hand - I guess they are more afraid of being assaulted than being locked in a closet.
I don't think these refs have been trying to screw Tech, but man, Tech sure seems to be on the bad side of a few missed calls. Greg Jones not getting called for a personal foul out of bounds is fairly ridiculous, but I guess the refs couldn't get their eyes off Bob Davie sucking him off.
What, did the check bounce?? Or do all the refs have evil goatee??
Or maybe we're just cursed...
Let's see, we've got a blatant pass interference in the end zone that turned into a FG, a roughing the kicker on a play where the play was whistled dead due to false start leading to a missed field goal, and a late hit out of bounds mixed with a face mask that leads to...?
If he doesn't try to throw it back in bounds, it'd be Texas Tech ball.
I think you're right. that made it look like he didnt have possession.
Is this what Michigan fans do when they have no one to cheer for? Classic!
I believe we're cheering against a team that makes Universities in Michigan look like they care more about a football game than integrity. But hey, I'm sure all those suspended players were totally innocent and deserve to be on scholarship, right?
...and you have nothing better to do than come to a Michigan site? Now THAT'S sad...
"There's been a bunch of great receivers at Michigan State. (Someone) comes to mind... there's been a bunch."
.
just said potts and concussion - uh oh
quick! to the shed!
Dantonio must have sold his soul to catch all these breaks tonight.
is there a "trick" play they have not called? next down... Statue of Liberty.
Annexation of Puerto Rico. Book it.
...to sell it.
Hate to say it, but with 14 players down (likely because of it) Dantonio is calling an innovative game. I'm sure he will become vanilla again, next year, but this is solid for State.
They've also had essentially no mistakes after that first drive and only one or two real drops I can remember. Innovation (relative that is) plus no mistakes equals a good game. Still, Tech should be winning this game.
With our luck, we would have the RB throw a pick in the endzone, and the fake FG end in a turnover
C'Mon, Jinx God
Given the weapons they have on offense and the way they are opening up their offense tonight they could be dangerous if Dantonio is willing to be this creative. Cousins is not "fast" but he can scramble, they have 2 good running backs, and Dell, Cunningham, and Keyshawn back.
One of the announcers mentioned that Blair White was about all that MSU loses to graduation/departure. I hope junior LB Greg Jones goes pro. Here's a 2nd round projectin for him.

not being rude, just wondering
Can't say that I'm an expert on MSU personnel.
I wonder how losing 3 O-Linemen is considered unimportant. Then again, I guess I'm just presuming that there is some sort of logic coming from a commentator. Bad idea.
What's the deal with the seniors who aren't listed in gray (Anderson, Denson and War)? Are they RS juniors or did you leave them out by accident?
I'm not sure that these are listed by elgibility.
I hope they're done, but I'm not sure. Why would they care?
Does Potts coming out = TT staff being extremely conservative to injuries, due to the James incident?
Looks like Leach's absence has hurt Tech more than the missing Sparty players. It hasn't hurt Sparty that the refs seem to be making up for all the bad calls against Michigan many years ago.
WOW what a catch!
quite the vertical on that guy
TRONNNN!
I'm sorry, is the game still on or something?
Oh baby. Touchdown TT. Please no comeback drive here.
pick 6 would be nice, I would hit my parlay and make some loot.
good call
I see another reason why Leach was fired - he clearly deprived Sheffield of food.
is very fitting
Good grief. TT has 28 first downs to MSU's 13. It's unreal that this game is close.
was going to happen. Man the way these guys jump on Tech my god some could make the basketball team!
Sparty NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Sparty NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
MSU is using its timeouts too early. They may pay for it if TT scores a touchdown.
EDIT: ugh, another lucky break for Sparty - the TT receiver just plain muffs it.
The 40 seconds saved is 40 seconds saved. Lloyd used to do it. But it's not that improbable that MSU might find itself wanting the clock to go faster.
I agree with the principle of calling timeouts on defense, but I don't think you should do it with over four minutes left. That's too early.
And now they're screwed. Even if they score within 30 seconds, they won't be able to get the ball back without an onside kick.
.
does he ever. although I would say he conducted an on-air interview for the Tech job tonight.
job is stupid.
Um, is it just me, or is it unusual for coaches to go with what they think is most likely to win.
that's a novel concept you've got there.
Wow. Lots of confidence in that receiver. Great way to redeem himself after the drop on 3rd for the first down.
I wonder what spread TT's coach got on the game... LOL
Why is TT not running the ball and the clock? seriously end the game
that would be a game-ender
clutch catch . great throw.
EDIT: annnnndndddd touchdown! do not care about the B10 bowl record at this very moment
Ballsy. This is fantastic.
Edit: Insult to injury. Completely demoralized on that last play, can't stop a run up the gut. Cya Sparty.
Texas Tech.
3 x 40 seconds is 2 minutes. It wouldn't take much in-play action to run out the other 8 seconds.
Now State has a small chance for a score, on-sides kick, & another score.
When they got the 1st down, I thought they should let them score. You can't win without the ball. Letting a team score to get the ball back is a strategy that they fail to utilize too often.
Still, I'm glad they covered. :-)
Did MSU rip their defense out of NCAA 10? Becuase the only thing they run is Cover 2 and 4. Sometimes they get wild and rush 5.
If you didn't know any better, you'd never guess Dantonio was an old defensive coach. All three years he's been there, his offenses have been much better than his defenses.
Looks like Couch Burning 305: Advanced Methods is going to pay off for some sparty alums tonight. Hope they don't burn down the Advanced Institute for Brahsearch.
If MSU had won after OSU had won to start 2010, I'd start wondering what was going to go wrong next with Michigan Football.
What my prediction was going to be? Scurvy.
https://www.msu.edu/~creswel1/riotstatus/index.html
But it's still early!
wait for it...
wait for it...
No students yet...
Are there ever really students there?
It could be a while, the guy that updates that page is probably out buying gasoline and fertilizer.
Edit: Double post.
Was that two graduate assistants being made to carry the cooler for two players?
31-41 Tech wins
like the last ditch effort to get people to feel sorry for dantoio for having to play without the thugs.
FAIL!
Dear Ruffin,
Welcome to the Urban Meyer School of whining and lobbying to the media. Now please be quiet and sit down.
yeah... I do think he deserves a shot or at least more than the "quota" conversation.
He lost his bet AND all his MGoPoints. ;-)
Pardon my ignorance, but I hear "SPARTY NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" all the time and cannot for the life of me determine its origin.
Anyone?
I find it humorous that no one has answered your question. I have failed to answer because I cannot recall the exact origin but admit to using such choice words on many occasions. It helps me not curse around the children. Actually I believe if you ask my 3 year old, he would tell you that is cursing.
If you mean how it started, with Sparty's tendancy to Sparty away games at the end as in "noooo, not againnnnnn!!", I'm sure that's self-explanatory. As for who did it FIRST, I'd kinda like to know myself, if it's not lost to the annals of internet lore.
I'm sure it truly originated in the stands of Spartan's Stadium...
Hey, where's that Spartan who dropped in to see what we were doing while Sparty was bowling? Still feeling talkative?
Sparty No!!! Although I have found myself rooting for the Big 10 this bowl season, I get some sort of warm fuzzy feeling knowing that the only furniture being burnt in East Lansing tonight will be out of frustration.
No one can deny both these teams laid it all on the line. I hope to see this kind of effort and urgency in michigan next year
extremely entertaining game
Fun game to watch. I could watch Dantonio lose all day long.
I liked the part at the end where the commentators said that you have to give Dantonio credit for having the courage to sit so many players . . .
