14.5 I believe...tough call though, because Oregon had much bigger goals at the start of the season than the Alamo. Texas playing for Mack, Oregon disinterested...could be close for a little bit

Is it too late to pitch it to Breaston?

so far. against a wickedly high-powered offense of oregon no less. greg has some talent at texas and has turned their D around since he took over. unlike when he came here, when he was forced to run that stupid 3-3-5 and had a mere 28 scholarship players on D.

Oh come on ... people on this site had nothing good to say about Greg Robinson in 2010. It had nothing to do with his not being a "Michgan Man."
What I'd like to know is how much freedom Robinson was given by Mack Brown to shape the defense there at Texas. He's done fairly well. 'Nuff said.
December 30th, 2013 at 9:13 PM ^
as was reported, greg was asked by brown to come in during the horrid start texas got off to. rememeber greg used to be at texas before he went to syracuse. greg could probably get elected mayor of austin right now with what he's done with that side of the ball.
December 30th, 2013 at 9:37 PM ^
I wanted him to do poorly and remove the thought that Richrod toyed with the defense too much or Mack Brown was right and we really didn't have the talent or anything else. Him doing surprisingly well (shockingly well around here) at Texas is just another poke at the open wound that is Michigan football
(In non-sports terms, I'm glad he's doing well. I don't really want to see a guy get fired)

And it's a large part of Oregon's success as well to apply it to one of the teams in this game. 2 is also a bit small of a sample size, wouldn't you say?
Sorry if I'm missing sarcasm.

My bad on the sarcasm. Oregon's also a good example of establishing one base play and running it well throughout the game, instead of having three to vary wildly between from series to series and week to week.

I'm skeptical about them landing an A-list guy. A lot of the guys on that list are going to end up using this to get pay raises from their current employers.

To get an authoritative view of where they all stood. Texas would be above some NFL jobs, presumably, but which ones? Have they fallen off significantly in the past few years? Would be informative (if perhaps a little depressing) to see where Michigan falls.
I suppose it depends on the coach being hired as well, Brady would have walked to Michigan (God bless him) when others wouldn't have.
December 30th, 2013 at 8:16 PM ^
Texas would be above some NFL jobs, presumablyWhy would you presume this?
December 30th, 2013 at 8:16 PM ^
Wouldn't the resources / prestige / money / influence of the Longhorn job top that of, say, the Jaguars? Or the Bills? I'd argue probably yes, but again it would most likely depend on case-by-case if it's a "college" coach or an "NFL" one.
December 30th, 2013 at 8:21 PM ^
The NFL is a higher level of football, period. A coach who has ambitions to go pro is not going to turn down a pro team to go to Texas.
December 30th, 2013 at 8:24 PM ^
But might a sitting Texas coach who wants to go pro turn down the Jags as not enough of an upgrade, even if he might take say the Patriots job?
December 30th, 2013 at 8:29 PM ^
That's not exactly the same thing. A lot of coaches are simply happy where they are. Art Briles may well turn Texas down to stay at Baylor, but that does not ipso facto make Baylor a better job than UT.
Every year you see successful college coaches go to the NFL (often for lousy jobs), but you don't see a successful NFL head coach walk away to take a college job.
December 30th, 2013 at 9:11 PM ^
My hypothesis is that for a successful up-and-comer at, say, Colorado, the order may well be Patriots > Texas > Jaguars. There's no way to know of course, but even someone who's going to move might prefer the college job. This is why having a database, or at least one coach's true opinion, would be cool - in order to know definitively.
December 30th, 2013 at 8:41 PM ^
Texas has won one national title in the last 40 years. I think we may be overrating them as a program. They're in that top tier, sure, but along with several other schools. I don't think they're clearly above the other elite programs in prestige.

It helps that Oregon keeps shooting itself in the foot with dumb penalties, but Texas is still doing a fine job of containing Oregon.
December 30th, 2013 at 8:18 PM ^
If Texas' offense could do anything they would have a chance. Alas, their Qb isn't the real McCoy.
December 30th, 2013 at 8:30 PM ^
A few halftime highlights:
Oregon - 296 yards of offense across 38 plays, or 7.79 yards per play
Texas - 156 yards of offense over 35 plas, or 4.46 yards per play
Case McCoy is only getting 2.6 YPA or about 6 yards per completon on 5-12 for 31 yards in the air. Marcus Mariota is getting about 10 yards per attempt and 14 yards per completion, on the other hand.
December 30th, 2013 at 8:32 PM ^
in the second half. Oregon eventually will stop making dumb mistakes and Texas' offense just isn't good enough to keep pace.

and his record shows 2 superbowl rings and lots of wins. virtually noone on this board admits the empty cupboard he inherited at michigan both in terms of talent and an epic lack of scholarship players on D - 28 total. show me another program with that imbalance and i'll bet you that side of the ball is what 'sucked'. then be forced to run a 3-3-5 D. nobody was going to make that work.
December 30th, 2013 at 10:24 PM ^
sounds pretty good to me. if oregon played michigan, oregon would cramp up with running up and down the field so much while they scored effortlessly. hate to say it, but the michigan defense problems during greg's era weren't greg's fault.
December 30th, 2013 at 10:32 PM ^
How could anything, whether success or failure, have been his fault? If you don't let your DC supervise the position coaches and you don't let him choose and implement a defensive scheme, what's left?
December 30th, 2013 at 9:07 PM ^
Those big athletic DL are giving them fits. Mariota is doing well, but their RB's are struggling.
