Al Borges' overview on Shane Morris in under 60 seconds

Al Borges knows expectations for Shane Morris are going to be unreasonable. In Al's less than 60 second take on Shane, Borges gives an idea of how pleased he is to have Shane aboard the team, and how far Shane has to go to be ready to see the field for M. Al doesn't rule out Shane playing this season, but I get the feeling a redshirt is likely.

It is kind of strange to have Shane on the M football team. Shane has been a verbal for so long, I thought the position had become permanent

I will put the Inside Michigan Football Signing Special 2013 in the first post, in case anyone wants to watch it live, but here is a recap of what Al Borges had to say regarding Shane Morris.

Al Borges on Shane Morris:

He has everything you want as a QB

Strong Arm

Extremely competitive

A bright kid

Loves Michigan

At Michigan for a reason and it goes beyond his abilities.

We’re going to develop him kind of from the ground up.

We’re going to start with the idea he doesn’t know a thing about playing QB.

We’re going to teach him everyday every phase of the position and get him ready as quickly as we can without rushing him into something he’s not ready to do.

From a skill level perspective; from a mentality perspective; from a demeanor perspective; he’s pretty much what you’re looking for in the position.

Haven't watched the whole video yet, but this was great.  Early on, starting at about 10:25 in, is an interview with Marcus Ray who discusses his recruitment from 20 years ago and the risk of commiting to Michigan while you're living in Columbus, Ohio, and also comments on some of the incoming recruits, as well as the use of a two tight-end offense in his day.

In the first 20 minutes, there are interviews with Jake Butt and Kyle Bosch, two of the early enrollees, and more extended interviews than we might've seen before with Dennis Norfleet and James Ross.

Please let this not be necessary. Long term health of the football program is best served with more QB depth. More QB depth is better achieved with a Shane Morris redshirt.

I'm not being glib - most of the "specialists" simply acquire so much knowledge and a teaching method that they are effective at a given position.

What makes Brady a DL specialist or Mattison an overall D expert? What makes the QB gurus with NFL pedigrees - Gruden, O'Brien, McDaniels - other than coaching experience?

Years of experience and peer recognition.

Al Borges is a football lifer with decades of experience.   He was OC at UCLA, where he coached Cade McNown into becoming a first round draft pick.  Same thing with Jason Campbell at Auburn.  I'd highly recommend Chris Brown's Smart Football chapter on Al and the West Coast.  Although Al's time as OC with Denard at QB is over, he has been running the West Coast forever and has probably forgot more about football than many will know in a lifetime.  Not sure where you're coming from.

I don't doubt his knowledge at all. He did do good things with McNown at UCLA. I'm sure Al had nothing to do with him being a major 1st round bust. I'm just wondering if he played the position in real, high pressure situations- that's all.

Very few major college coaches have no college playing experience. I can think of Charlie Weis and Mike Leach

"We’re going to start with the idea he doesn’t know a thing about playing QB."

I am not sure if he took this approach with Bellomy, but this is probably the right way to go about it with Shane, especially since the system Borges ultimately wants to install is probably going to be perfect for Morris' skills. As he mentioned, Shane has essentially everything they want at the position, so if he can have the year to learn the system and develop, then I think we're in excellent shape at QB for a few years.

I know Morris doesn't have to play right away, but I wonder how Henne and Morris compare, as Henne had to start right away.

Go Blue.  That it all.

Morris pretty much lost his senior year due to mono.  I know he played, etc, but he had to struggle just to to break even on the year as opposed to improving.

If Shane Morris plays this year, it will probably be due to injury or disappointment from Devin Gardner and Russel Bellomy.  I really want to see Morris redshirt and get back the momentum he had before he got mono.

Am I the only person who winces when people refer to a recruit only by their first name? We don't know these kids; it seems creepy to me.

No excuses. Play like a champion.

As much as that might bother me, it doesn't touch referring to Wilton Speight as "Sp8".
