It's UCONN week lets move on and chalk this up as a learning exp.

Michigan struggled or why Akron succeed. Coaches have to go through it, you know (and Brian as well)......

the Lions are actually good this season. Looks like a wildcard team with the potential to win NFC North.

This is closer to 2011 Lions than it is to 2012 Lions. They'll be scary good this year.

These next two games will tell us a lot about the Lions. They haven't won in either Arizona or Washington in a long time.

I actually think that yesterday was more a case of how the planets alligned then anything. Lack of push and pressure from the respective lines is and has been a problem, but I really don't think that yesterday is a predictor of things to come. As generic of an excuse as it may be, I think yesterday was actually "just one of those days." I have to say though, and I have not wanted to because it sounds like an excuse when there is no acceptable one, but was anybody else surprised like almost right out the gate at how physically competitive Akron seemed to be. You could look at Central and know that they were simply physically outmatched and did not matter how hard they played, but I noticed early on that M really did not look to have any noticeable physical advantage in terms of pure size and athleticism. I don't think Akron is going to be a bottom tier MAC team. I know they have struggled early on, but I think they looked pretty good and will probably be pretty competitive going forward this year in that conference. Hats off to them.

and I don't think the sky is falling but . . .
Devins poor decisions/turnovers. The big plays against the secondary. Poor coaching motivation/gameplan, BOTH lines playing abysmal (and worse than the last 2 weeks) and Wile's almost-block-shankasaurous fest? Against the Akron Zips?
That's a lot of planets!

We have issues that need to be resolved. I would not be surprised to see some personnel changes in the coming weeks, particularly up front.
At the same time, I think this was at least partly a case of Terry Bowden & Co. gameplanning their hearts out for this one - by far their biggest game of the season - while we were focused more on other games. They had Gardner well-scouted - they knew his move to avoid pressure in the backfield and sent pressure from the other side, and also jumped some of his favorite routes. Bowden was a pretty good hire for them. He's been around the block and I think he'll make them more competitive. Meanwhile, our offensive and defensive gameplans were pretty barebones, definitely less creative than we've seen.

I agree with you about Akron coaches being good, experienced, and game-planning for this game for weeks if not longer. What better way for a smaller school to show improvement and earn some credibility than to play toe-to-toe or perhaps earn a victory against a top 20 team?
As far as personnel changes on the O-line, I think that is possible but not probable.

All fourth quarter UM rushed with four DEs and got no push at all because UM gave up about 50lbs. What was the reason? I think the Naval Academy has more beef on the d-line than UM.
September 15th, 2013 at 1:16 PM ^
Akron had abandoned the run, so we were in pass D mode.
It's a little worrisome that we still couldn't get much of a rush even with the smaller front, though. We need Jake Ryan back ASAP.

If Michigan is going to have a game like this, it was a good week to do it. They have an opportunity to make improvements and show against UConn that they are a much better team than they showed against Akron.

Is it like the last few years never happened? Michigan 2008-2010 finds a way to lose that game. They won it there is a difference.
September 15th, 2013 at 8:54 PM ^
The difference between wining this game and losing it was not anything Michigan did well. I know everyone wants to make a narrative out of everything, but this one was simple dumb luck. Off the top of my head, we won by four in a game where they missed two field goals and Akron threw an interception directly to a defensive back from the two yard line.

yesterday would have been a worse loss than the loss to app state. are you telling me you think this team is ready for a run at the B1G championship? If so you are a lunatic.
