Adidas or Under Armour?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

let's say that Nike is off the table and the choice is either staying with adidas for a shit ton of money or going with under armour.

I say stay with adidas. Michigan would be THE adidas school and be making the most money in the nation on the deal. now this is only a hypothetical scenario of Nike not being an option.

I might be reading this wrong, but are you saying that Reebok is both a soccer and cross fit brand? Or are you saying Reebok is a soccer brand because they are owned by Adidas?

I think Reebok stopped making soccer shoes in the mid to late 2000s. I don't think they sponsor a single professional club anymore. The last major club that has Reebok was Bolton Wanderers and they have been relegated from the EPL for several years.

Jokes aside, Warrior Sports is based in Warren, MI and owned by New Balance. They're famous for lacrosse and hockey equipment, but they also sponsor Liverpool and I know they at least make Brother Rice's football jerseys.

I don't know why something like this isn't an option.  Choosing a smallish company that actually manufacturers their gear in the US would be a massive PR coup for Michigan.  It could start a national conversation about child labor and sweatshops used by the big players to manufacture clothing and shoes.

Hell, if the company is small enough, the AD could just buy a big piece of it.

New Balance is actually an interesting company, they make their shoes in the US and have for like 75 years. They are a key player in the TPP debate. Also, their new fresh foam tech is awesome for runners.

I was shopping on their website a while back, and they offered shoes made in the US with US materials, and shoes made in the US with imported materials, in addition to their foreign made stuff.

Of course the domestically made shoes were more expensive, but they are very well made and comfortable.  And you can feel good about yourself when you're wearing them.

Under Armour, solely because I hate the generic bball unis Adidas puts out for all its schools and frankly all their designs are just shoddy. I don't wear Under Armour very often (or at all) but I'm down for a change (barring change is not a Maryland level atrocity, but a respectful nudge like Northwestern or Auburn).

The problem is is that Under Armor has zero recruiting cred.

Under Armour has no shoes of note unlike Adidas who has D Lils and D Roses.

Is there a faq or something explaining how shoe companies affect recruiting again? I know someone posted something about it, but it's just hard wrapping my mind around.

I'd be a heck of a lot more concerned about the coach, the academics, the campus, he'll almost everything except dorm food.

Based on this MDen solicitation I just received, it seems logical to conclude that today's meeting with Nike went well...

"To make room for the new 2015 merchandise, we need to move out all the remaining 2014 jerseys. Most jerseys at all M Den locations are on sale for up to 50% off. Jerseys from just about all sports, Adult, Ladies and Youth will be on sale. Come and check out this great opportunity at all M Den locations or at www.mden.com"

Actually, I think this has to do with adidas new re-coloring of their version of Maize that some of the 2015 line has.

The 2015 polo sports actual Maize. The mass movement in jerseys by MDen could be an effort to get the stuff with the highlighter Maize out so they can make room for the new adidas Maize gear.

I'm gonna email them or call them about this tomorrow.

Here is the polo I'm referring to with some other gear.

They are calling it "The MDen Jersey Event."  We'll see, but my bet is that they have good indication that their current jerseys will soon have scrap value as all demand will be for a new supplier's gear.  Again - just looking at the tea leaves.  I look for you, young man, to do some deeper reconnaissance tomorrow and report back on your findings.  No potential evidence should go unturned.  Godspeed.

Actually Michigan will be wearing Adidas for 2015 football regardless of a deal. Probably the fact that 47 and 98 were the numbers produced on authentic and replica jerseys and will have different numbers this year. My guess is 5 and either a qb or rb number along with as WD stated tweaked colors and possibly style.

Also from a buyers knowledge and people in Adidas the stuff this year is some of the worst looking ever. I know that Carr's son who was involved with a job that landed him Adidas when that contract was signed has not been employed in that capacity since last year. the Nike deal would be worth less but they would probably make more because lots more people would buy it and the fit and quality are far superior to both Adidas and UA.
