Adam Stenavich to Northern Arizona as OL coach

Submitted by bdsisme on

Per the Arizona Daily Sun (link), Adam Stenavich is leaving his current position as Michigan Offensive Graduate Assistant Coach to join Northern Arizona University as the OL coach.  You may also remember Stenavich as the starting LT for the Wolverines for 3+ years (2001-2005).  MGoBlue bio: http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/adam_stenavich_804045.html

Hoke coaching tree in action!

Can only be happy for the guy.  I wish they were a more visible program but that will come in time.  Would love to see what he is able to do leading the O-line and what results he can produce.

That's fair, but if we're saying "Molk and Lewan would have been great no matter what he did," we probably should also say, "all those young, inexperienced guys would have struggled no matter what he did," too.

My assessment of Funk falls somewhere between TBD and disappointing, with a lean toward TBD.  It'll be interesting to see what happens this year under Nussmeier.

Not necessarily - Funk could be awesome at taking OL from "really good" to "All-American" (and therefore impress Lewan and the Kuglers), but be lousy at taking someone from "raw high schooler" to "pretty good B1G player". The ability to teach the basics and the advanced stuff may not be interchangeable.

I agree, but I don't think you're responding to my point above.

My point was that I'm not sure why (1) moving guys from raw to pretty good is about coaching if (2) moving guys from good to great isn't about coaching.  That's possible, but it's definitely not obvious that it's true.

Your point is that a coach who's good at (1) might not be good at (2) and vice versa.  I agree with that.

Apparently, what we needed last year was a coach who could take 3 athletes from 'went to high school prom  6-12 months ago' to 'servicable B1G interior lineman' in one season.  Not too many coaches capable of that.  The jury's still out on Funk and it will probably still be out after 2014.  Competition should be stiffer this year with more 2013 recruits in the mix and we should be better as a result, but not elite.  Still too young.

Lewan also said Funk was the best position coach he's ever had.

I believe the downfall of the OL last year was a mixo f inexperience and scheme.  Did Borges call plays that ran inside zone type blocking?  That's Funk's specialty, and that's what Nuss will be calling a lot of.

Great opportunity for position coach! Although surprised that another school would find their next OL coach from Michigan after last years performance.  But it seems going between different position coaches is kind of the norm.

First, we are bringing a new assistant who could have new ideas.  Second, he is going to develop his own ideas and perhaps one day come back to UM along with Hart as RB coach, Charles as DB coach, Tom as QB coach and Woodley as LB coach.  What not?

Who should be head coach when that day comes? I think it should be Tom instead of being QB coach. You know he had to have picked up some valuable HC skills from Bill by now. Keep Hoke on staff (maybe assistant HC?) for recruiting. Damn, I should be the AD...
