Adam Schefter says UM has no IPads?

Submitted by toomer18 on
On sports center this morning Schefter says that Michigan has one of the smallest support staffs, and the players don't get iPads. So these might be reasons not to come. Plus UM doesn't use a private jet for recruiting. True statements? Don't see IPad's being a factor.

He was remarking at how Michigan has nickel and dimed the program and those were just some examples of little things that most schools do that Michigan resisted.

He was contrasting that with Michigan making the offer of making him the highest paid football coach. Will he be great at UM? Of course. Is he worth $8MM a year? Maybe if he wins a championship.

I think you are misquoting Adam Schefter.  Had the radio on and they played his audio clip.  Adam said, "Michigan balked at iPads".  I'm assuming he means we were slow to give out iPads in comparison to the rest of the country.  Which, to be honest, I could see.  But as everyone already pointed out, they do have iPads now.

We've reached the point in the CC cycle where we've invoked the shadowy real estate agent, FlightAware isn't working, and iPads are now in the discussion.

This is the worst. Just hire a coach already.

Wow.  These folks simply cannot admit when they're wrong.  Michigan basketball certainly uses ipads including the girls team.  As for the private jets, two years ago I was flying from San Jose to Phoenix after a few days at Pebble Beach.

Jim and his family were at the airport.  It was a couple of weeks after the Super Bowl.  The flight was delayed and my friends and I had a table in the bar.  We gave up our seats to Jim and his family, including the nanny (in case Schefter is worried about baby sitting not being included). Our golf group all sat in first class, Jim and his family in Coach!  I don't think private jets are a prerequisite for Jim.

As an aside, we did get to chat a little in the bar.  You've never met a more genuine, down to earth guy than Jim...and yes he did give our group a "go blue" and thanked us profusely for giving him and the kids a spot to sit.

Regardless Jim's decision, he is a quality human being who won't be swayed by the trappings. As for Schefter, his writing is pure drivel.

I'm a Greyhound bus driver on the night shift, and I can testify that Brady Hoke, Greg Mattison, and Roy Manning were regular customers for their recruiting trips down south. There's nothing more invigorating than spending 20 hours on a Greyhound on those comfortable seats, and taking a dump in a Greyhound bus toilet is an experience in luxurious defecation. When we finally pull in to high schools in Tuscaloosa or Hattiesburg or Opolacka, Brady and Greg and Roy were refreshed and ready to go recruting for the fifteen minutes they had before boarding the bus for the return trip to Ann Arbor.

Okay, let me send this report to Bolivia - I can't say too much but let's just say I supported the war effort from 2010-2013.

Internally, the team uses a piece of software called XOS Thunder, which combines the two endzone shots and 50yd line shot for each and every play. The team uses this in position/team meetings - 99% of college football teams also use this same piece of software.

Outside of Schembechler Hall the players have access to a service called Hudl - Hudl is available on iOS/Android, although most players use this on their laptops. It takes the same video ingested into XOS and makes it available through the web via a modern (IE11/Chrome/Safari) browser. The same video is available for the players to review on their own time, outside of the football building.

Although Hudl on iOS/Android is a great app (Hudl itself was founded by some Nebraska software guys and a former Microsoft executive from Nebraska), the web interface on a laptop is 100x better. This is why the players don't have iPads.

Originate from the pad level and not the iPad level. We found the money to train players with Navy SEALs, if technology was material and lacking we would have addressed the situation already. Schefter is Windows Millennium Edition, early release.

All I can add is that if you think the team didn't have iPads because of Hoke, or doesn't use a private jet because of Hoke, you don't know what you're saying.  He may have prided himself on being "old school" but he would never say "no" to something that would provide a competitive advantage in either recruiting or on the field.

If OSU is using a private jet and giving their players tablets to use, you can BET he'd want them too.  He might not use one himself and he might not be among the first to start doing it, but there is no way he was ever okay with a rival providing something to their staff/players that Michigan didn't also provide.  Hoke never wanted Michigan to look second rate when it came to that kind of stuff.

Say what you want about coaching acumen, but he was not a "cut your hair/no tatoos/get off my lawn" kind of guy.

Definately wasn't Hudl for at least the spring/summer.  Could be back to Hudl now.  I can tell you that I have seen the guys spending considerable time on their Ipads (use the term generically - they are in a big ol rubber case).

Not really seeing from the players perspective anything they are lacking and I know several players for other teams across the country.

$48 mil and they can't or won't throw in iPads for some reason.  OK.  Clearly a deal-breaker.

Please, just listen to WTKA and read MGoBlog.  You don't need anything else.

devices, PCs.

Let me describe my preference at home this way:

We used to have PCs for the kids.  I then realized I had two jobs.  One that paid and the other was being the IT department for all the crap my kids clicked on that jammed up the PCs.

If you like PCs it's because you likely are in the IT department at your job or have that skill set or have no kids or wife that will randomly click on virtually everything.

As soon as we went to Apple devices my life literally changed for the better and the IT department at home was eliminated.  I will be forever grateful to Apple for that.

Let me describe my preference at work this way:

We have an IT department.

Tons of schools don't use private jets. I've sat next to MSU and Iowa basketball coaches on Delta flights all witihin in the past year. I don't see them struggling to build a program.
