Adam Schefter says UM has no IPads?

Submitted by toomer18 on
On sports center this morning Schefter says that Michigan has one of the smallest support staffs, and the players don't get iPads. So these might be reasons not to come. Plus UM doesn't use a private jet for recruiting. True statements? Don't see IPad's being a factor.

Michigan hate sells.  Honestly.  If you write a scathing article about how MSU sucks, cheats, etc., no one will read it, because no one gives a shit.  On the other hand, people eat up those kinds of stories about Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Texas, and a few other schools.  You can make a career off of attacking a school like Michigan, especially if you have the added credibility of being an alumnus.

So weird. I feel like, and maybe somebody has made this connection before, but doesn't the NFL's complete incomprehension at why anyone would leave the NFL for college (when they were successful and in demand) sort sound like how Sauron never considered the possibility that anyone would want to destroy the One Ring?

Is that those are all Coach Hoke things...

Basketball has iPads, IMO, it's a coaches decision. Hoke is old school and doesn't even use e-mail, it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't think iPads were necessary for each player.

But he also refused to wear long sleeves until late this year and he doesn't wear a headset.

He's "old school" in his mind. And iPads and private jets for recruiting and all of that is "fluff" and Hoke isn't that type of guy.

Guarantee if he asked and demanded all of that stuff, he would've had it.

Beilein got iPads for his guys, they watch film on it. Hoke probably doesn't even know what an iPad is.

We all know the man is stubborn about trying to be "old school" and trying to do things exactly the way Bo did it. None of this is news.

If Harbaugh wants these things, I'm damn sure he'll get them. No one is saying we'll give you 8 million dollars a year, but you can't get 100 iPads. That's stupid.

Hoke probably wanted guys watching film in Schembechler Hall, together, I dunno...I don't care. He's not here anymore and we're discussing something that isn't even an issue.

I'm sure if Harbaugh wants a head set, we can find him one. If he wants iPads, we can get those too. If he wants a plane - we have those as well, and nearby airports.

Even the support staff...having a small support staff is an "old school thing" (grumpy, "I don't need all these yes men!" type attitude) Bo wouldn't have wanted a million guys on his staff. We ALL know that. But in today's college football they have someone for every little thing possible and someone else just to make sure that first someone gets that little thing completed.

Basically what Schefter said was "Michigan doesn't have what the SEC has" and he failed to say "But Brady Hoke likely wanted it that way."

Exactly. Remember how much Michigan paid to renovate the weight room JUST to accommodate Barwis? It was well over $1 million. And that was 7 years ago. You don't do stuff like that because you're cheap. Then you look at how much they paid Mattison and Nussmeier on top of Hoke's ridiculous contract....

There is a dedicated video staff that would be responsible for chopping, editing, and uploading the video and making it work with iPads. Its not like Hoke would have anything to do with it. That said, paying for 120 iPads is something I would be surprised to learn the AD does, but its not the same AD I knew. I'd suggest they all use Microsoft Surface anyway. That's a tremendous product.

For being wrong or "douchey"...no problem.

But calling him bitter and acting like he's against us is just stupid.

I don't even like the guy, I'm just saying. Let's call him out for this dumb ass report that he just gave to the public which implied Michigan doesn't give out amenities --- when in fact, the previous coach likely never wanted them in the first place AND these amenities are certainly attainable for Harbaugh (who we're discussing).

Call him out for that. There's plenty of "fuck yous" to go around for just that without going the "oh he's just bitter route." That route is so middle school, so "well we didn't want to play with you anyway!" or "I don't care if I got dumped, she was ugly anyway."

...and in the end, the fact that iPads even came up in this charade is ridiculous.

It would be like saying "Michigan only uses yellow and orange PowerAde and Harbaugh prefers the red."

It's the most trivial sticking point I've ever heard. It's something that is a particular way by preference and something that can easily be changed.

It was just a dumb thing to say that just had no bearing on the situation and made him look foolish.  Almost sounds like he was trying to deflect the focus off of what he said previously and now we're talking about Ipads... derr.

I agree, I think he's still "on our side" and I appreciate some of his work, but I just lost some respect for him now as he appears to be floundering around and not handling it very well.

they have to turn them in at season end, that it was misrepresented as was the deal with the private jet. He's implying this was the case:

when in reality they have jets readily available to use and they were used.

Mr. Yost

...and I couldn't agree more.

He shouldn't be reporting on this anyway, but the problem is, he's an NFL guy and a Michigan guy and everyone at ESPN is looking to him to work his "sources."

Doubt he has any other than former Michigan athletes and NFL pundits. And any former athlete close to the situation (Griese) is taking this thing REALLY seriously. They're trying like hell to get this hire right and really work at it, which I respect, and respect Hackett's leadership in involving them.

Nonetheless, Schefty's got nothing. He'd be much better off just reporting on the Cutler/Tressman/Bears debacle and shutting the hell up about Harbaugh and Michigan.

This is a college story. It's about Michigan coaching hire even though they're looking at a coach currently in the NFL. College guys are going to have a much better take on the situation.

I'm sure this has to be one of the top things on Jimmy's mind whether or not the school uses iPads and how much that will impact his decision to come here. Right now I think Hackett is at a point where if it means the difference between Jim coming home or staying away that he could ask for just about anything and get it.

iPads are garbage. It's too bad Windows 8 sucked so bad... because no way would people choose an iPad over a Surface Pro if the OS on the Surface was better.

I have a Surface Pro 3 and I love it.  I love Windows 8.1 (not sure if you were referring specifically to 8 and not 8.1).

Anyone who says either the Surface or the iPad "sucks" is just a fanboy.  They are both premium pieces of technology that offer different advantages and disadvantages.  I love them both, but for different reasons.  Because I don't have $49M, I had to pick one and it is great.

Adam Schefter is garbage.  He repeats the same useless crap over and over.  Michigan can offer a coach $49M, but can't spend $100k on iPads...yea, that makes perfect sense.  I want Harbaugh so bad for football reasons, but it would also be great to see all these guys and their "sources" be proven wrong.

December 18th, 2014 at 9:27 AM ^

Haha.  Haha.  HAHAHAHA!!!.  Fuck an iPad!  My kid's school district has dropped hundreds of g's on those pieces of trash, which kids just use to play Minecraft.  My bosses bought themselves iPads and seem to think it revolutionary that you can read our industry publications on PDF.  Not sure what else they are good for.  Jesus Christ I can't stand ESPN or really anybody who says anything ever.

MichiganSports

December 18th, 2014 at 9:29 AM ^

I think Schefter was more alluding to the fact that he has doubt's about the legitimicy of the offer. Basically you won't buy Ipads but you will give out 8 Mil a year to a coach.

Mr. Yost

December 18th, 2014 at 9:29 AM ^

...he's just not a flashy guy.

He's not an SEC guy that is going to land on the football practice field at a high school in a chopper and walk over to a game and then leave in the 3rd quarter and make a huge scene.

That's just not Hoke.

So all of these things are probably true, but I'm willing to bet that they weren't asked for either. Hoke is old school. He doesn't care about iPads and planes. He only knows one way and he's a dinosaur in some regards. We all know that.

He doesn't even wear a headset. You think he's going to worry about a private jet and an iPad?

So it was just pointless reporting. Yes, it's true...but it's not something Michigan couldn't provide. It's just things the previous coach didn't feel he needed.
