This is exciting, but I am so depressed about the state of the AD and football.  A firing doesn't automatically mean things get better, so I suppose cautiously optimistic is the best way to describe how I feel.

What if we get a bad hire at AD who hires a bad football coach?  Just more years of crap.  I don't know.  /sighs

I tend to be pretty pessimistic as well, but I can't really imagine a worse AD than brandon. Aside from the whole, being a corporate stooge who everybody hates (with the possible exception of big donors), his one big hire was a total whiff. Hoke's resume screamed 'not ready for prime time' and his tenure here has borne that out. Plus, if the rumors are to be believed, no decent coach will work under brandon. I'm at the point where I believe the next guy can only be a step up, so I say let the heads roll

I want him gone too, but I don't think you can knock DB for taking a chance on Hoke.  It was a calculated risk to hire what looked like an up-and-coming coach.  Just like it was a risk to hire Bo, Lloyd, or Jim Tressel.  Those guys turned out.

DB gambled and lost.  Even though I hate where we are right now, I actually admire him for taking the chance.  It's all the other stuff he does that makes me want someone else.

not the Regents. He doesn't strike me as a person who will make a change become of fan/student unhappiness. He will look at the bottom line i.e. budget performance and concluded the unhappiness will pass with student graduation and improvement of the Michigan football performance. He will have DB do some missionary work to smooth things over.

I wish it wasn't the case but I am convinced DB is here to stay.

Schlissel will take a lot of advice from the regions. And while Schlissel isn't familiar with a profit machine athletic department like UM's, Bacon has said that he is familiar with collegiate athletics being very important to the student body and college experience, albeit in a different way, from his time at Brown.

their heart and not their brain. Please understand I would like to see DB discharged but it will not happen for the following reasons.

Think about it, you have a new President on the job five months being asked to discharge an AD who by all accounts has increased the donation to the athletic department resulting in many of the minor sports getting more money to compete. Add that this AD has the support of the largest donor and apparently the student organization which sent a letter suppporting him. Factor in the basket program is considered one of the best and the other sports are gaining national recognition.

Yes, he has made mistakes hiring Hoke being one. ALL AD's MAKE HIRING MISTAKES. HIs commercialization of the athletic department can be easily corrected.

Schlissel will retain him but put him on a leash. Hoke's future will depend on what happens the rest of the season. If he makes a bowl game he stays. LIke it or not logic dictates how this will play out.

Perhaps Mr Ross is a professional philanthropist and loyal alum and Brandon didnt have to work that hard to negotiate his latest/greatest gift. Maybe he realizes that since he'll never have as much as Gates he can be best remembered for giving to his school so the genuine love and desire to give back won't be gone in 30 mins or less with the new director. I don't believe Okie St reinvented sports administration and they managed to get a whole bunch of T Boone's money.

of the university to so many in the general public, it is imperative that it appear successful and well run, and of course actually be successful.  There has not been much positive or successful coming from this branch of the Ath sources lately.   A new AD opens the possiblity of a top tier head coach.  That alone is a step in the right direction

This is positive news but remember the Regents cannot fire Brandon, that has to come from the President so the best we could get from the meeting is their recommendation he be removed.  That would certainly carry a lot of weight but it isnt the killshot by any means.

I still fear they will meet and decided that changes can be made internally to address the issue and come up short of wanting him out.  That would make it very hard for me to imagine our new President taking Brandon out on his own.  I guess we'll know tomorrow.

The President is the person who hires the Athletic Director.  The Board of Regents technically has nothing to do with it.

In the real world, though, a "search committee" or an "advisory committee" will be formed by the President, and the committee will appoint somebody to do the work of contacting candidates. The President is unlikely to have much personal involvement in the process until after the finalists are selected.

Here is how a less contentious search committee was constituted 14 years ago:

Note that the search committee was instructed to choose 3 candidates, and the President chose from those 3 individuals.

DB will be relieved of all duties on Friday 10/24, the day befoe the MSU game. The timing is intended to temper reactions after the likely defeat by the Spartans. This is according to a rumor I made up 5 minutes ago...
