Actual Michigan Football News - New Walk On Full Back - Great Story

Coach Harbaugh brought on a new walk on full back, Michael Hirsch. In this part of the Rich Eisen interview, he discusses his background.  Great story of overcoming sickness and giving up a lucrative Wall Street job in favor of the opportunity to play for Michigan football.

One of the things that comes out in the video is Harbaugh's absolute love for football and how he is a kindred spirit with anyone who shares a love for football, especially Michigan football.

Full disclosure - The student-athlete's father is a friend of mine. As you can imagine, his parents are quite proud.

Moderators, the Eisen thread below in the 24+ minute video link covers this. If you think this thread is overly duplicative, go ahead and delete it.

Gotta love that pregnant pause when Harbaugh says "come on man you're breaking our, uh, breaking our..." [is he gonna say it?] "Well I guess I can't say that on the air." AWWWWE

I watched what I think is his high school video and he looks pretty good. He has some decent agility and enough speed for a fullback. I'm assuming a college S&C program will get him bulked up and maybe we have a solid FB for two years.

Come on now!

This makes my day!

After everything he's been through...he deserves this.

After watching this...Harbaugh comes off as awkward, but I LOVE IT! He beats to his own drum and as Michael was telling his story, Harbaugh's loving every minute of it. Harbaugh knows he deserves it. I like how Jim lets him have his moment on the show.

I can't wait for sept 1.

From Mealer to Hersh...this is something to get behind. GO BLUE! And God bless.

ive read other people say this to. i dont see it, he is very well spoken but very measured in the way he talks. no bs and never comes across as a person trying to make sure he says the " right thing".   awkward is the last thing i would describe him as.

I completely agree. Harbaugh isn't awkward. He is in control and thoroughly in the moment and enjoying himself. Every time he's on the Rich Eisen show he's cracking up Eisen and his crew and they are eating out of his hand. Awkward people don't have that ability. I'm curious how these people define awkward.

conference.  I think that for those who see a degree of awkwardness, what you are witnessing is a man without guile in his love for football and for men and women that share the same. No pretense, no rehearsed verbage for the interview, completely in the raw.  That's Harbaugh's appeal...not a fake bone in his makeup.  So, let's get past the "he's awkard" when indeed he's being real and be thankful for it.

Fullback from '89-92. That guy was so textbook as a lead blocker, it was the first time I ever really appreciated what good fullbacks could do.

Here's a clip from the '92-93 Rose Bowl, Legette is No. 40 leading Ricky Powers up through the hole while Michigan was trying to close out the win (Wheatley was cramping up after getting his 225 yds.): https://youtu.be/f4XTvaL6Ees?t=2m15s

Feel the Burn. That is how you lead block.

Awesome, love it! Has played fullback, knows the spot and has the best coaches in CFB. Pretty quick, looks pretty damn strong and is through the hole and into the next levels very fast. That'll do 10 times out of 10 for me. Didn't get a chance to see his blocking but if he has a case of the quicks, it cant be all bad.

Edit: Blocking looks pretty good. Actually better than mine and I was pretty much the best there ever was bar none so...you do the math!

Near the beginning of the clip (start at about 0:35), he deliberately answers Eisen's "he's a walk-on?" question about Hirsch with "newcomer." Reading between the lines a bit, I don't think he likes dividing up the team into "walk-on" and "scholarship" tribes. Walk-on has a perjorative feel to it, and given the Kovacs-Glasgow-Glasgow recent history and such, Michigan rightly is place where maybe we should drop that whole distinction.

Great story. Can't wait to see him get on the field at some point.

but 25 seconds later he said that Hirsch inquired about walking on to the team.  There is no shame in it at all & really to me, is a badge of honor.  There is no need to subvert the language when everybody knows what everybody is talking about, & virtually nobody is offended.

I will be rooting for this guy a little extra.

Great story! He'll be my new favorite. At Harvard, he did not play in any games during his two-year stint before his diagnosis. He was listed as a Tight-End playing behind a line of NFL Calibre TE's, including three who are currently on NFL rosters (Kyle Jusczyck; Cameron Brate; Ben Braunecker). During Hirsch's stay in Cambridge, Harvard's Coach, Tim Murphy, became known as a guru for developing blocky-catchy guys worthy of NFL looks (http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/2632287-harvards-development-into-…). Murphy, for those looking for more connections, was John Harbaugh's mentor at Cincinnati, furthering the blocky-catchy tradition.

Regardless of his playing time, these are the type of young men you want in your locker room, setting the tone and building the culture. Bright, driven, hard workers and also appreciative of the opportunity to be part of the Michigan tradition.
