about calling THE OSU "Ohio"

Submitted by sheepman on

Look what the guy at Rivals wrote...

"John Borton: A lot of folks apparently think it's cute that Michigan's head coach shortens the name of the final regular-season opponent. It's not. It's disrespectful, unseemly, and dripping with the sort of discourteousness a fellow Big Ten institution doesn't deserve, especially one that's been under attack for months by the ink-stained wretches.

It simply needs to stop, and stop now.

Michigan 27, O. 17"

What a douche. And then he goes on to write O.?

What do you all think? Why are his panties all up in a bunch over this? Or am I missing his sarcasm?

EDIT: On a closer read, I am thinking he is being sarcastic. I mean he says, "it simply needs to stp and stop now". and then  O.17 (showing them getting beat by two scores).

Subtle sarcasm is good.

hindquarters what some internet nebbish thinks, but. . . how much mileage can we get out of it, honestly, being that it's not their name? There is a U of Ohio, right? Vaguely appropriates Woody's deal about not saying Michigan's name, which I also thought was kinda dumb. Oh, wellz. Twenty thousand loyalists will now pledge allegiance by negging me for saying it, but that won't change the fact that. . . glib, truly cutting, or witty it ain't.

Who cares? Ohio has been straight up disrespectful in every way and form for a long , long time. We don't like them and they hate us. I'll call them Ohio and I'll encourage every friend I have as well. It could be way worse.

"go blue, beat ohio" to a buckeye fan who was passing by. He responded with "it's ohio state." He wasn't too happy. So I promptly replied with "Brady even has you buckeyes shortening the name. I thought it was the ohio state?"

When they started referring to themselves as THE Ohio State University, they sunk themselves splat into a target of justified parody. Not necessarily that Hoke using just Ohio is intended as a response to THE. But it sure works that way, and I love it!

"AN Ohio State University"; that's been my favorite pejorative for OSU for years.  I do have to say that I can understand the board's strictures against fifth grade sobriquets like O$U, but it's hard for me to not use it in light of the last several months

It is ridiculous that they would be mad about it, for the reasons already given.  I didn't think it was particularly notable or insulting when Coach Hoke used it, and didn't know why the media was making such a big deal about it.  But the OSU fan's irritation might actually make it funny to me.

IMO, the folks who should be mad are those fine people at Ohio University, whose mascot did such a nice job pounding Brutus not so long ago.
