Aaron Wellman article in the Detroit News(plus Dinosaurs! [OT])
Not sure the obsession with the media and Strength and Conditioning coaches, but there was an interesting article in today's paper on our new one I haven't seen posted yet. Let the hype begin.
http://www.detnews.com/article/20110316/SPORTS0201/103160428/1004/SPORT…’s-new-strength-coach-a-man-of-few-words--many-positive-results
Mattison's story is kind of funny.
And don't forget, again, for those missing the wolves, I have it on good authority that Wellman has pet Velociraptors....

But, I'm gonna be a nerd. Those dinosaurs are actually Deinonychus. They changed the name to Velociraptor because it sounded cooler. The real velociraptor is the size of a goose, where as the deinonychus could drop-kick your head off...
March 16th, 2011 at 10:36 PM ^
Velociraptor sounds WAY cooler. And who the fuck could pronounce deinonychus anyways. I think they changed the name cause in Jurassic Park the actors couldnt figure out how to pronounce deinonychus so they got a script-writer to invent a bad ass name.

yeah, it's not as hard as it looks.

Ive been telling people this since the movie came out. It's good to see other like-minded people.
March 16th, 2011 at 10:55 PM ^
Nope. Bad ass dino needs a bad ass name.

Velociraptors also had feathers to add to their small stature.
Most of them, from bigger one's like T-Rex to the little one's having feathers.
Ah yes I suppose I came off sounding like that was exclusive. I was just crushing mental images of the vicious Jurassic Park velociraptors, It's just the later ones that supposedly had feathers right?
I could... in second grade... does that make me a nerd?
Yes it does. Welcome to the club.

There goes the internet ruining movies for me...
The name Jurassic isn't exactly accurate (though again, it sounds cooler), most are actually from the Cretaceous Period. Both the Deinonychus and Velociraptor are from the Cretaceous Period (though from differnent times, the early and late Cretaceous respectively), as are the T-Rex and Triceratops (both late around the time of extinction). In fact, only the brachiosaurus and the dilophosaurus are from the Jurassic Period. It's unfortunate to note that the dilophosaurus also probably couldn't spit venom, thus leading to the demise of Newman.
The movie was still awesome though, and the sequal was good too. The third one was absolutely terrible though.
March 17th, 2011 at 11:56 AM ^
The stegosaurus was also from the Jurassic period, IIRC.
One thing I never understood about the movie: why did they use frog DNA when they were creating the dinosaurs? That never made any sense.
March 17th, 2011 at 12:46 PM ^
He's a very good writer for the most part, but he's a one trick pony. He latches onto one or two scientific notes and crafts a horrensously scientifically innacurate novel around them.
Jurrasic Park - Trying to clone dinosaurs from ancient DNA and frog species changing sex spontaneously. "Hmm... lets combine these!"
Timeline - Quantum entanglement and the infinite universes theory and quantum computing.
Prey - Nano-robotics and artifical evolution.

But I don't recall it being in the original Jurassic Park
Are you trying to quote this?

For dinosaurs.

I'm going to try this some time. You won't know when it's coming, but when it does, it will be epic.
Hold you to that.

At least he gave us warning.

It looks like a big turkey.

March 16th, 2011 at 11:37 PM ^
Try to imagine yourself in the Cretaceous period. You get your first look at this six-foot turkey as you enter a clearing. He moves like a bird-- lightly, bobbing his head. And you keep still, because you think that maybe his visual acuity is based on movement, like T-Rex; he'll lose you if you don't move. But no, not Velociraptor.
You stare at him and he just stares right back.
And that's when the attack comes-- not from the front, but from the side, from the other two raptors you didn't even know were there. Because Velociraptor is a pack hunter, you see; he uses coordinated attack patterns, and he is out in force today. And he slashes at you with this: a six-inch retractable claw- like a razor- on the middle toe. He doesn't bother to bite your jugular like a lion, see. He slashes at you here, or here... or maybe across the belly, spilling your intestines. The point is, you are alive when they start to eat you. So, you know, try to show a little respect.

Sounds like a night on the town with Sparty's football team.

This guy is exactly the opposite of Barwis. He says he doesn't want interview because it's about the kids where Barwis said he didn't want it to be about him but he would continually interview and try to get his business out there.
March 16th, 2011 at 11:02 PM ^
I was at office hours with a football player today, and he was talking about how he thought the new guy was better than Bawris. He felt like he was only a bit tougher, but he thought the actual workouts were more effective.
After he was done, I asked him if things were going well witht he new staff, and he said things were awesome, followed immediately by "We're going to beat Ohio State this year". Now that's what I like to hear.
Player's name not discolsed because I am honestly not sure who he is. Didn't really know he was a football player until recently...
March 17th, 2011 at 12:50 AM ^
Did he have dreads, a smile that could light up a black hole, and look kinda like Desmond Howard?
Were any nagging maladies suddenly and inexplicably cured when his smile fell upon you?

Can't the Detroit News get someone to proofread this stuff? wtf?
.
March 16th, 2011 at 11:38 PM ^
Yeah I saw that and immediately questioned my own existence. Then I realized nothing was contained in it, just bad editing.
March 16th, 2011 at 11:44 PM ^
I still can't figure out what that "sentence" is actually supposed to mean.
And they wonder why they are losing readers.
...read good.

anyone here read Animorphs? There was a book where they went back in time and acquired the DNA of the Deinonychus to morph
March 17th, 2011 at 12:28 AM ^
the covers are classic.
I thought those were dumb the first day I laid eyes on them. Never opened one up, never regretted it.
Yeah I never read one either. Last semester I was sitting in the back of an education classroom and I eventually realized that they were all over the book shelf. I just kept trying to find the creepiest one.
You couldn't have been more wrong. yes, slightly childish premise (aliens from outer space trying to invade Earth). That said, fantastic plot, great storytelling, great fight scenes.
March 17th, 2011 at 11:18 AM ^
I guess I was too jaded by the "Goosebumps" genre to take serial youth novels seriously (I read a bunch of Goosebumps, and they were terrible). I was more into Redwall and LOTR as a kid, because those books didn't have the cooke-cutter, paint-by-numbers feeling that a lot of the other youth books floating around did in my pre-HS days.
March 17th, 2011 at 12:10 AM ^
I am very curious to hear the first interview from a player about the strength coach. Barwis' program seemed so difficult that it would be interested to see how it compares in their eyes.
Am I late to the party? A quote already out there perhaps?
March 17th, 2011 at 10:15 AM ^
One can only imagine how many people see this title and think "eh, I'm not really that interested in that topic enough to read an article" and be completely missing out on the great dino discussion that has taken place.
and Done.
