#11 seed Dayton upsets Ohio State to end Aaron Craft's career. Gritty career. Or as Verne called him, angelic.
SO MUCH GRIT
He's filled with gritty spunk.

If you've got gritty spunk you should probably see a doctor
a kidney stone, you might want a priest instead of a doctor. Owww
If you've got spunk but can't score...no children!
That logical thought process.
"Angelic?" I agree. He sure was great at making "snow angels" on the court while waiting for refs to put him on the FT line.
Didn't see the game - hope they were able to get this mentioned on air!
In his own image of being the best player in the history of sports writers who actually can't play professionally because of you haterz, not a lack of talent
he sure isn't afraid of having the ball in his hands with the clock ticking down.
/now whether that is a good thing is another story.
//it's not a good thing.
///unless you're a Michigan fan.
my bracket got messed up, the big10 SOS thing may have taken a hit, don't care, all worth it.
Yep. Totally worth a billion dollars to see that
Bracket integrity is a silver lining to an Ohio win. An Ohio loss is, in the parlance of this blog, 100% pure Columbian awesome.
If I win every other game and Craft cost me a BILLION dollars, I will be visiting him and taking some teeth back with me. And I will not be leaving Mr. Craft a quarter under his pillow!
Of course my alumni assoc. bracket I picked Dayton. I think the payout is slightly less.
I am 5 for 5 BEYATCH!!!!
How do you not drain some clock on their second to last possession.
He was mugged I tell ya.
After listening to the slobbering over him all game long, it's hard not to agree with Brian's conclusion that there is a significant racial element to the praise. Rafferty said he "respected him more than any other player I've ever seen." Why, exactly? Is he the first ever guard to play tough defense and get good grades?
Hes the first one to do it at Ohio State
The announcers spend a lot of time with these guys leading up to games. Due to OSU's success and Craft's starting for OSU the past seven years, Raftery and other announcers have had plenty of time to build up their man crush.
I'm fine with the man crush, except that I don't recall the same love ever given to Jordan Morgan, a great student-athlete and character guy who gets the most out of his talent.
Well, except for here. And that's because you all are brilliant.
EDIT: And Chait. Whoops. Good for him!
Well said. After listening to the announcers fawn over him all game that ending was so perfect
I was thinking the same thing listening to Verne and Bill, but then Barkley said the same thing on the post-game. The kid must just have the kind of Tebow-like personality that makes grown men love the guy,
I'm not saying that only white people like Craft. I'm saying that people praise Craft more highly because he's white.
Terrific article. He uses Novak and Morgan to make the case of white bias towards the gritty player. My only quibble would be that Novak has such an extroverted personality (Aneurysm of Leadership!), while Morgan is less demonstrative and doesn't stand out as much. But the two are very similar otherwise, and Morgan only gets a little of the credit Novak got for TRUE GRIT.
From "My Future's So Bright" ??
I thought that was Lunquist who said that.
Comparisons to Tebow are completely apt. The only difference is that with Tebow, the blowback from guys like from Pro Football Weekly that went crazy anytime someone sung his praises was hilarious. No such comparable in Craft's case.
It was Lundquist. My mistake.
Totally agree. This reminds of a long time ago, when I once heard an announcer say of Paul Molitor "he's the kind of guy you want your daughter to bring home." I don't recall if that was after he stopped using cocaine, but I'm pretty sure the announcer didn't feel that way about Mookie Wilson.
How about Corey Brewer from Florida? He won back to back titles and shut everyone down he guarded--plus he could score. I never heard the verbal orgasms over him.
Unacceptable thread in bad taste
you forgot the /s
If that's the man's opinion...can't knock it.
I'm not going to slob over him (and not saying he was)...but I'm also not afraid to recognize a great career.
There are certain times when you can "tip your cap" or somewhat even "cheer" for your rival.
I think this is one of those times.
It's not the first Boston Red Sox game in Yankee Stadium after the bombings, it's not the Jordan farewell ovation in MSG. But it's in the same respect for your rival. I hate your fucking guts...but I understand that you make this rivalry just as much as we do and I respect what "rivalry" stands for. So in this single moment, I will stand, clap or cheer for you. In the next moment, I will got back to hating you with every piece of my being.
Felix knows Sam was being sincere---his /s reference was itself sarcastic
"If that's the man's opinion...can't knock it."
Why can't you knock people's opinions?
I'm not so sure Craft was responsible for that. FYI.
Well he shouldn't have gone to a school where they do that then
I hate being that guy, but do we really need a thread about this?
If you hate being that guy, then do us all a favor and don't be that guy.
Sure it's not the most newsworthy thread, but what's the point of a rivalry if we can't heckle the guys on the other team? It's all meant in good jest, or at least it should be. No one is forcing you to open threads that you don't like.
Who are we heckling? You think Aaron Craft is going to visit this site? It's a bunch of people thinking it is funny and smarky to show a bunch of gifs about a guy who played for a rival who (by all accounts) seems like a halfway-decent kid who would have been welcomed with open arms had he played at UM.
I don't care that much about this usually because whatever, it's an internet forum. But my gawd does this place devolve into RCMB territory whenever something bad happens to OSU or MSU.
Welcome to the Internet, you must be new here.
I'm sure Craft is a good guy, but there are a lot of other players who represent themselves in an honorable way. Most of these guys don't go to Ohio State. Let's appreciate them first.
In other news. HAHA!!!!
EDIT: I'll neg myself for missing the obvious.
I'll take this instead I guess.
Until 4:30 hits.
I appreciate that we went 2-0 against them this year.
So many memories
as much as i love to hate the guy (and the team), what is the point of this?
It's fun. Get a life
If you still were coaching in Tampa you could sign him. He's not going to be doing anything else.
OSU! Don't even care that it throws a wrench in my bracket. Happy trails! I will drink a celebratory beer as soon as I get home.
OSU! Don't even care that it throws a wrench in my bracket. Happy trails! I will drink a celebratory beer as soon as I get home.
i would have rather had osu winning, and then losing to cuse. i hate untidy brackets more than i hate ohio.
Good riddance, Craft. I will miss you like I miss a GERG-coached defense.
SUCH AN ANGELIC COUNTENANCE. SO MUCH HEART. SO MUCH GRIT. BEST DEFENSE.
You're not thinking NBA are you? Lol
I suppose my questions are these - is it possible to end your college basketball career on a duffed layup but still show grit and determination while doing it? Can you commit an intentional foul with incredible hustle? Has Dan Dakich downed some Tussin and Jameson on his way to a little nap now?
his three-point shooting against us.
This needs to be a LOL at OSU thread. No reason to single out Aaron Craft.
No reason to single out the star of the team who everyone unduly praises all the time? I'm sure he's a good guy, but some people here need to lighten up.
Had this "upset" in my bracket!
I guess we know who has the best basketball team in the state of Ohio.
OSU would be the 3rd best.
Total liability late in games.
I guess Trey Burke was right.
Your sons team plays tonight.
*Craft makes a basket to put OSU ahead.
*Commentators give endless love to Craft.
*Dayton gets the winning basket.
*Craft can't get the winning basket so OSU loses
*Dead silence for about 20 seconds.
*Commentators give praise to Craft on his career.
My GOD. Stop slobbering over Craft and give some love for a team who not only won but SHOULD have had this win wrapped up much earlier.
If the commentators are merely speaking about one team or one player then they really haven't done their homework. Should know and be able to talk up both teams.
I don't know if I can blame them for it in the first round as they have to cover a lot of basketball.
Need a replacement for this one.
As a Michigan fan, I love this thread.
As a parent, I get a litte uneasy. It's not like this dude brought any of this on himself (other than the airballs). For all intents and purposes, he seems like a good, upstanding citizen. His career is over now, so I wish him well.
Have anything against Craft personally. He seems like a good dude, and I think he and Trey were both really good for each other.
It's the commentators we hate. Craft does not have a holier-than-thou attitude. The commentators do, and they use Craft as a vehicle for that. And that's what people hate
I think he is overly whiny on the court, but for the most part, you're right.
The kid gets crazy amounts of attention, and yes, he's basically just a REALLY good rec/intramural player offensively...but damn, I tip my cap to that kid.
I may respect him more than any other player for any of our rivals in any sport.
I'm going to miss our teams competing AGAINST him.
Well done Aaron, congrats on one hell of a career.
So why do you respect him so much? Other teams don't have gritty rec players?
First game on Thursday and an upset of OSU. There goes my chance to win 1 billion dollars.
No thank you Aaron Craft.
I'd love to see a slo mo replay of the last few seconds. I think craft took 5 steps.
I thought the same thing. Looked like a mini running back on that final play
Suck it Craft
I do appreciate Craft. I picked OSU to win the game, but I was rooting for Dayton. Glad that OSU is out, but I don't have anything bad to say about Craft. I don't think that he was a great basketball player, but he played hard. I wish that all of the players on my favorite teams always played as hard as he always did. I am glad that we don't have to face him anymore.
I guess who I feel bad for is Bruce Pearl. Dude got a show-cause penalty for recruiting Aaron Craft and lying about it. What we didn't know at the time is that he must've said "have you seen his jumper? I would never recruit him"
Dan Dakich has stepped off the ledge.
He'll need to find somebody new to love like a son.
Oh, wait . . .
Fans like u give our fanbase a bad rep. I dislike craft as much as the next guy. But saying what u said it uncalled for.
Craft's fault that announcers slobber all over him like he's a naked Kate Upton playing basektball, but we can all be thankful we never have to listen to any of them call a game with Arron Craft in it ever again.
We would have loved him if he'd played for Michigan. It wasn't his fault that announcers over-hyped him.
Isn't there some unwritten rule that you can't be in Dayton and defend Aaron Craft right now?
Unique player? Why? Because of the hype? I can go to the Y and find a lot of unique players.
He was a competitor, yes. He was no different than any other meh shooter that played tough defense.
Quality kid that is getting grief from the real scum - OSU rednecks "fans". Very happy OSU is out but I feel for the kid. Also very hapy we didn't get Amir Williams.
He has/had become the Tebow of college basketball....without the accomplishments at the college level.
Aaron Craft is gone
Had too much faith in his shot
Glad to see him go
I certainly appreciate the fact that he's gone!
Personally I was impressed with the growth in Craft the last week. He was able to hoist his last second shot far in advance of the 2 feet he was able to vs Michigan. People, admit it - that is incredible week to week advancement in strength.
Cheeks with the rosey colored hue
Is he retiring finally? I think he has a good 3 years left in him yet.
I would have been pretty pissed about the non call on his like 5 steps, and that he lowered his shouler to try bowling over 3 defenders with neither called.
OMFG I hate that son of a bitch so much.
I feel like this nicely makes up for us losing to Ohio (the green one) in the 1st round a few years back.
One of those guys that you absolutely dread playing. Class act, great defensive player, and a good representative of his university. Glad he's gone, but only because he was a very tough opponent. Hope he succeeds in whatever he does next.
I'll miss those rosey cheeks.
Aaron Craft Demonstrates the "New Foul Rules":
Is it just me or did his offensive game decline year after year? He was never great offensive player, but I don't remember thinking that he was this terrible when he was a sophomore.
I always expected him to end up averaging 16-17 a game by his senior year.
So do we get to give them back all of the crap we took when we lost to Ohio, or what?
I couldn't be happier that Craft's career ended with those last 2 games.
It's the same thing as Tebow, I have nothing against him personally, the media reaction to him made me hate him.
Craft by all media accounts in the smartest PG who ever lived regardless that he couldn't even crack 5 assists per game when when surrounded by superior talent in college.
aren't burke and sullinger friends?
They are like brothers.
He was so gritty...and white.
I don't have anything against him personally. He is a good student and probably a good guy and I appreciate the effort he brought to the floor. That said, he is not half the player that the media makes him out to be and watching him shoot a jump shot is incredibly funny. I also don't like that he got away with so much hand checking and everyone just called it good defense.
I'm not sorry he is gone and I'm definitely not sorry that his career ended like that. Long live the Aarball gifs.
I will not rejoice until we win tonight.
said something about not having the love anymore
...right before Sanford hit that shot. "If you want a student athlete, he's your man."
Didn't make the ending of that game any less hilarious, though. Way to go UD!
''Well...... Bye.''- Curly Bill
But that last gif is pretty funny. Maybe he thought he was playing football.
It's become a punchline for my son and I. Novak was grit. Craft is a punchline.
We haven't seen a Tommy Amaker Appreciation Thread yet.
so according to ESPN.. over 3 million (espn tournament challenge entrants) people picked Dayton over ohio. how come i didn't get that memo?
opps.. spoke too soon. that is my rank after cincy being knocked off by harvard. what's up with the state of ohio college athletics this week?
Same here. Didn't think UD could pull that off.
Nice win for Amaker but things are setting up well for Staee. Amaker needs to get Harvard to take care of business on Saturday.
more Chait--post Dayton game
Funny how he ends up on the floor after the losses. Mostly the same picture. Epic.
is bound to make your cheeks red.
I know we have all hated Craft, but I did feel sorry for him after the loss. Glad to see UD win (as an alum), but Craft is a good kid no matter where your allegiance lies. Need more student athletes like him. Good luck to him from a Michigan fan on his future endeavors.
